Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boll Weevil Suppression, Management, and Elimination Technology: Proceedings of a Conference, February 13-15, 1974, Memphis, Tennessee These developments spurred the cotton industry, in 1958, to appeal to Congress for an overall program of research that would adequately deal with an ever-increasing boll weevil problem. Congress directed the Secretary of Agriculture to review the situation and submit a report of research and facility needs to meet the boll weevil problem. The Office of the Secretary appointed a study group to develop the information. The study group's report made two recommendations. The first provided for increasing ongoing re search at three of the Six locations where Federal research on the boll weevil was underway. The second recommendation provided for the establishment of the Boll Weevil Research Laboratory to concentrate on new approaches to boll weevil control. In 1960, Congress appropriated the necessary funding to implement the two recommendations. The intensified joint research efforts of the cotton industry, State agricultural experiment stations, and the us. Department of Agriculture during the next 8 years resulted in the develop ment of a number of extremely promising suppression measures. These achievements prompted the National Cotton Council of America, in 1969, to appoint a special study committee on boll weevil eradication. This committee, with the help of a technical advisory group, considered actions that should be taken if and when research advanced to the stage that boll weevil eradication might be considered to be technically and operationally feasible. In a meeting of this committee and its advisory group, held on May 6, 1969, reports of progress in research suggested that suppression tech niques might already have been developed to the extent that eradication might be achieved. Therefore, the committee felt that a pilot experiment was necessary to test the various suppression measures. A special subcommittee made numerous onsite visits to various boll weevil infested areas and eventually chose an area in south Mississippi, in cluding adjoining areas of Alabama and Louisiana, for the experiment. The area was chosen because it was regarded as one of the most difficult areas in which to achieve eradication. The Pilot Boll Weevil Eradication Experiment, the largest entomological experiment ever attempted, encompassed a land area of approximately square miles, of Which approximately was planted in cotton. A Technical Guidance Committee was appointed to provide overall guidance for the conduct of the experiment and liaison with the numerous industry, State, and Federal groups involved, and to assess the results of the experiment. Funding was provided by the State of Mississippi. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boll-Weevil Cotton in Texas Some of the solitary bracts representing reduced involucres, are not of the usual expanded form, but narrowly tubular or trumpet shaped. (pl. III, Fig. To form these tubular bracts the margins must have been united or fused together at a very early stage of development, while the abortion of the other bracts and of the flower bud must have taken place at a still earlier stage in the for mation of the involucre. The tubular bracts may be described as ascidia, a name that has been applied to similar malformations of leaves in several other families of plants. The marginal teeth of the solitary bracts are reduced in number, especially those of the tubular bracts, or ascidia. Having lost their floral buds at the early stage of development the reduced involucres can serve only as leaves, and they persist for the remainder of the season, as already stated. The stalks or pedicels of the reduced involucres are very short and slender, more like petioles of small leaves than like pedi cels of normal buds or bolls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil: A Revision and Amplification of Bulletin 45, to Include the Most Important Observations Made in 1904 The present bulletin is based upon Bulletin N o. 45, of this Bureau entitled The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil, issued in May, 1904. That publication included the results of investigations of this impor tant pest which had been carried on for several years. The present bulletin includes additional results that were obtained during the sea son of 1904. In form the principal changes are in the incorporation of the treatment of some 50 additional topics. AS a matter of fact, however, Some of the principal actual additions are incorporated in the tables which occur throughout the pages of the bulletin. Many additional features of the life history of the pest that may throw light upon the question of combating it have been investigated. In some respects'very considerable additions to our knowledge of the insect have been made. This is especially the case in all matters relating to dissemination. This topic deals with matters that are naturally dith Cult to determine. The work must be done in the field, and a large territory must be covered. Through the cooperation with the Louisi ana Crop Pest Commission, which was engaged in an attempt to pre vent the further advance of the boll weevil into that State, a number of entomologists occupied several months' time in the extreme eastern and northern regions infested by the pest. It is, of course, only upon the basis of such a complete knowledge of all means by which the weevil leaches new regions that the possibility of checking its advance may be considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Experimental Work on Poisoning Cotton-Boll Weevils The results of these experiments were certainly definite and Sig nificant, but it was considered possible that they might have been due to some peculiar conditions prevailing during that season and that they could not be duplicated during another year. Consequently the experiments during the season of 1916 were planned largely to check the results secured during 1915, with the important change that provision was made for a wider range in the periods of applica tion. In 1916 the applications in the different experiments extended from the first appearance of the weevils in June until about the 1st of September. On the whole the results in 1916 were just as definite as were those of 1915, and the greater importance of the late-season applications Was very plainly demonstrated. In this connection a detailed description of a few of the tests is of interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Parasites of the Cotton Boll Weevil The boll weevil has been present in the United States for fourteen years. At this time it is doing serious damage to cotton in four States, and during the present season undoubtedly will invade a fifth. In regions like Central America, where the insect has existed for many years, there are various influences that serve to hold it in check. In this country Similar influences are beginning to be in evidence. Among the direct factors in the natural control Of the boll weevil that are now at work are the following: Heat and dry ness, the native ant Solenopsis geminata, winter temperatures, proliferation, parasites, defoliation by the cotton leaf-worm, deter minate growth, and birds. Of these, proliferation and birds have already received careful special attention, while the work of the native ant has received preliminary notice. The other factors have also been more or less discussed in the publications of the Bureau of Entomology and elsewhere, and more extensive studies of certain ones will be discussed by Dr. W. E. Hinds in Bulletin No. 74 of this Bureau. While the work of parasites, discussed in this bulletin, is not. At present one Of the most important factors in the control of the boll weevil, the indications are clear that its importance will grow rapidly. Moreover, the matter has special interest for the reason that it is not unlikely that practical means may be devised to increase the work of the parasites. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hibernation of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil Until this time the hibernation of the bell weevil has been less understood than any other phase of its life history. This was due to the great difficulty in obtaining the necessary data and the fact that the phenomena of hibernation are not necessarily identical in different seasons. In fact, it will be seen from the following pages that there have been very important dissimilarities between the years when special observations have been under way. The necessary repeated work in large cages in different localities has now been carried on and extensive field observations have been made in various representative parts of the infested area as to the natural situations in which the hibernating weevils occur. As a result, the present bulletin will make the life history of the bell weevil during the winter season at least as well known as any other portion of its biology. In the work leading to this bulletin practical considerations have always received primary attention. However, it has repeatedly been shown that careful detailed investigations of injurious insects may result in important suggestions for control that are not foreseen at the beginning of the work. Therefore the tepic of the hibernation of the boll weevil has been investigated from every possible standpoint. Its importance, as a critical period in the life history of a most injuri ous pest, has abundantly warranted this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Boll Weevil (Anthonomus Grandis Boh.): Abstracts of Research Publications, 1843-1960 While a considerable amount of experimental work has been done in various parts of the United States in dusting cotton for the cotton boll weevil, it was essential that special tests be made in Georgia. Particulars are given of the experiments and the results show that the method was successful in practically every case. Directions are given for applying poison; the various materials that may be used, of which calcium arsenate gave the best results; the dosage and number of applications; and suitable machinery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Biology of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil on Short-Staple Upland, Long-Staple Upland, and Sea-Island Cottons Owing to the very decided effect Of climatic factors on the biology Of the boll weevil, it has been found necessary to study the develop ment Of the weevil under both field and outdoor insectary conditions. In order to throw some light on the possibility of growing sea island cotton under weevil conditions, a comparative study Of the biology Of the weevil on upland, long staple, and sea-island cottons is included herewith. Since all methods of control are usually based upon facts secured from biological studies, the results Of the life history studies recorded herewith are of considerable importance to the cotton growers east of the Mississippi River.
