Book excerpt: This study examines transportation alternatives for moving cereals into position for storage under the West African Food Security Regional Reserve agreed to by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2013, for which cereals were first procured in 2017. It describes the reserve’s management structure and rules for procuring commodities, both types of cereals and preferred sourcing for those purchases. The study identified countries within the 15-nation ECOWAS region where the desired types of cereals are available, and recent sources for imported rice, which is a preferred staple food in ECOWAS member countries even though the region is far from self-sufficient in this commodity. Despite the poor quality of roads and commercial trucks in much of West Africa and the official and unofficial barriers to movement of products across national borders, surface transportation of cereal shipments is determined to be the most economical mode of transportation for servicing the stockholding facilities of the regional reserve for goods originating within the continent. Significant investments are scheduled to be made in railroads that cross national borders within West Africa, as well as in infrastructure for river transport, including inland port facilities and improving navigable channels in key regional river systems, but those modes are not yet viable alternatives to road transport for most of the West Africa region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenes of starvation have drawn the world's attention to Africa's agricultural and environmental crisis. Some observers question whether this continent can ever hope to feed its growing population. Yet there is an overlooked food resource in sub-Saharan Africa that has vast potential: native food plants. When experts were asked to nominate African food plants for inclusion in a new book, a list of 30 species grew quickly to hundreds. All in all, Africa has more than 2,000 native grains and fruitsâ€""lost" species due for rediscovery and exploitation. This volume focuses on native cereals, including: African rice, reserved until recently as a luxury food for religious rituals. Finger millet, neglected internationally although it is a staple for millions. Fonio (acha), probably the oldest African cereal and sometimes called "hungry rice." Pearl millet, a widely used grain that still holds great untapped potential. Sorghum, with prospects for making the twenty-first century the "century of sorghum." Tef, in many ways ideal but only now enjoying budding commercial production. Other cultivated and wild grains. This readable and engaging book dispels myths, often based on Western bias, about the nutritional value, flavor, and yield of these African grains. Designed as a tool for economic development, the volume is organized with increasing levels of detail to meet the needs of both lay and professional readers. The authors present the available information on where and how each grain is grown, harvested, and processed, and they list its benefits and limitations as a food source. The authors describe "next steps" for increasing the use of each grain, outline research needs, and address issues in building commercial production. Sidebars cover such interesting points as the potential use of gene mapping and other "high-tech" agricultural techniques on these grains. This fact-filled volume will be of great interest to agricultural experts, entrepreneurs, researchers, and individuals concerned about restoring food production, environmental health, and economic opportunity in sub-Saharan Africa. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of Africa’s complex farming systems, set in their socio-economic and environmental context, is an essential ingredient to developing effective strategies for improving food and nutrition security. This book systematically and comprehensively describes the characteristics, trends, drivers of change and strategic priorities for each of Africa’s fifteen farming systems and their main subsystems. It shows how a farming systems perspective can be used to identify pathways to household food security and poverty reduction, and how strategic interventions may need to differ from one farming system to another. In the analysis, emphasis is placed on understanding farming systems drivers of change, trends and strategic priorities for science and policy. Illustrated with full-colour maps and photographs throughout, the volume provides a comprehensive and insightful analysis of Africa’s farming systems and pathways for the future to improve food and nutrition security. The book is an essential follow-up to the seminal work Farming Systems and Poverty by Dixon and colleagues for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the World Bank, published in 2001.

Book excerpt: Food security is defined as the ability of countries, regions, or households to meet their required levels of food consumption at all times. Food security is an important component of human welfare, and it can act as an indicator of a region's development. This book addresses the roles of trade, policy development, and economic cooperation in creating sustainable food security in the West African region. The largely micro-level analysis is conducted on empirical data from the household where decisions on production and consumption take place. Food security is discussed in terms of its component parts, namely: availability of food (production and trade), its accessibility (incomes and poverty status), and its utilisation (health and nutrition).

Book excerpt: Sustainable Food Security in Central West Africa is a network of researchers and policy makers in Africa and the Netherlands that works to achieve food security in West Africa through research and policy dialogue. The members believe that food security will be enhanced if complementary features of coastal and sahelian countries in the region are exploited through trade, the harmonization of subregional policies, and general economic cooperation. Twelve articles discuss food security in terms of production and trade, income level and poverty status, and health and nutrition. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: The triannual Crop Prospects and Food Situation report provides a forward-looking analysis of the food situation across the globe, focusing on the cereal production outlook, market situation and food security conditions, with a particular attention on low-income food-deficit countries (LIFDCs). At the start of 2024, FAO assesses that globally 45 countries/territories, including 33 in Africa, nine in Asia, two in Latin America and the Caribbean and one in Europe, are in need of external assistance for food. Conflicts in Near East Asia, and in West and East Africa are driving alarmingly high levels of the most severe phase of acute food insecurity, while widespread dry weather conditions are expected to aggravate acute food insecurity in Southern Africa. The report includes the first global wheat production forecast for 2024. The preliminary wheat production outlook indicates an expected 1 percent year-on-year increase in the world output to 797 million tonnes in 2024, albeit still remaining slightly below the record reached in 2022.
