Book excerpt: The nodular attack of ?-annealed Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4 in steam at 500°C is dependent upon the presence of hydrogen in the environment, the important function being the hydrogen to steam ratio rather than partial pressures. The uniform corrosion between the nodules was unaffected by the hydrogen in the steam. ?-quenched Zircaloy-2 showed the opposite behavior, suffering nodular corrosion in hydrogen-free steam and corroding uniformly in steam with hydrogen additions. Nodules did initiate on Ozhenite-0.5, but did not develop into serious localized attack for ?-annealed material. Alloys with higher niobium content and Valoy were independent of hydrogen in the steam and they never suffered localized corrosion. The chromium-rich particles in Valoy did not influence the oxidation of the matrix adjacent to the particles under hydrogenated conditions. The iron-rich particles in the Zircaloys and in Ozhenite-0.5 decreased the oxidation of matrix in a region around each particle. Nodules initiated by oxide cracking over grain boundaries in areas with few intermetallic particles. The observed influence of hydrogen in the steam on nodular corrosion is attributed to its effect on the electron conductance of the oxidized iron-rich precipitates.

Book Synopsis Advances in Materials by : Sam Stuart
Download or read book Advances in Materials written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Materials surveys the developments in materials science and technology. This book examines the limitations imposed by materials on the development of technology. Organized into 34 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the techniques in solving the technical challenge in the field of materials. This text then defines the difficult environments considered in this investigation, which include mechanical stress, erosion, chemical attack, and thermal shock at temperatures above about 1200°C. Other chapters consider the successful development of nuclear thermionic converters, which centers heavily on the development of materials capable of enduring rather difficult working conditions for longer periods of time. This book discusses as well the techniques, such as the planar and epitaxy technique, employed in the production of devices. The final chapter deals with the rate of development in the equipment used in the fabrication of plastics. This book is a valuable resource for polymer scientists, materials scientists, engineers, and metallurgists.

Download or read book Advances in Materials written by P. A. Rottenburg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1966-01-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Materials is a record of the proceedings of the symposium on Advances in Materials, held in Manchester College of Science and Technology, Manchester, England in April 1964. The papers collected survey the developments in materials science and technology. The limitations imposed by materials on the progress of modern technology and developments to meet the increasingly exacting requirements of industry are examined. The topics discussed include the challenges to materials science in the chemical industry; progress in materials, designs, and fabrication techniques in the power generation industry; the nature of glass; and effects of temperature and environment on the mechanical behavior of metals. Materials scientists and engineers will find the book a god source of information.
Book Synopsis Oxidation of Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys by :
Download or read book Oxidation of Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oxidation rate was found to be relatively insensitive to various types of surface preparations in the temperature range 400 to 700 deg C. No dependence of reaction rate on oxygen pressure was observed. The cubic rate law also was obeyed by foil specimens at 700 deg C; however, the rate constants were slightly larger than values obtained from parallelepiped samples.

Book Synopsis High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals by : David John Young
Download or read book High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals written by David John Young and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-10-03 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is concerned with understanding the fundamental mechanisms of high temperature alloy oxidation. It uses this understanding to develop methods of predicting oxidation rates and the way they change with temperature, gas chemistry and alloy composition. The focus is on designing (or selecting) alloy compositions which provide optimal resistance to attack by corrosive gases. . Emphasises quantitative calculations for predicting reaction rates and the effects of temperature, oxidant activities and alloy compositions. . Uses phase diagrams and diffusion paths to analyse and interpret scale structures and internal precipitation distributions . Provides a detailed examination of corrosion in industrial gases (water vapour effects, carburisation and metal dusting, sulphidation) . Text is well supported by numerous micrographs, phase diagrams and tabulations of relevant thermodynamic and kinetic data . Combines physical chemistry and materials science methodologies.
