Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion of Iron and Steel During the last few years the civilized world has begun to realize the importance of understanding the numerous factors connected with the corrosion of iron. Iron is being manufactured in enormous quantities at the present day, and is used for almost every conceivable purpose, so that it is essential for us to gain some knowledge of its powers of resistance to the destructive action of time. Numerous researches have therefore been undertaken with a view to solving one or other of the problems in question, and it seemed desirable to collect all the reliable material together and present it to the scientific public generally, in order that the manufacturers and consumers alike might easily learn how much is actually known of the subject, and in what direction further research is desirable. This has been particularly needful, inasmuch as those who have published works have frequently been manifestly ignorant of the work of previous investigators along similar lines, and it is remarkable what a number of times certain facts have been discovered and rediscovered. Take for example the fact, apparently first proved experimentally by Adie in 1845, saturated solutions of common salt do not corrode iron in the presence of air with anything like the rapidity that tap water does. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corrosion and Preservation of Iron and Steel IT has been found a difficult matter to bring a work of this kind up to date. New material which touches directly, or in directly, ou the corrosion and preservation of iron and steel, is appearing almost daily in the technical press of the world. The authors have made the effort to include or mention the results of all recent investigations and original researches touching on the subject which have appeared up to the time of going to press, even if to some extent the systematic arrangement of the work has had to suffer by frequent insertions. Although a consider able space is given to the description and results of the researches of one of the authors working in a Government laboratory, no material is included from this source that has not already been printed in official bulletins for free distribution to all persons desiring it. While the book is written mainly to elucidate the electrolytic theory of corrosion (which some one has humorously referred to as The New Thought in the protection problem), it is nevertheless hoped that it will be found useful and suggestive even to those to whom the theory does not especially appeal. This book was released on 2004 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water utilities often do not know the specific cause of external corrosion observed on their water mains, and consequently, the chosen preventative measure may not work effectively. Historically, these choices are based on data from other industries (e.g., gas and oil) and may not be suitable for the water industry. Corrosion of metallic pipes can be caused by a variety of mechanisms, each of which requires a different solution. Determining which corrosion mechanism is at work is not a simple matter, because the resulting pipe damage looks similar for all of them. The failure to properly identify corrosion sources may produce prevention systems that are ineffective or do not last. For example, it is not effective to install an anode bag on a main that has a bacteriological corrosion problem. Similarly, an anode bag installed to reduce corrosion caused by a stray impressed current would be quickly used up and would provide only short-term protection. Much recent research on corrosion has focused on internal corrosion, primarily related to water-quality issues, such as lead and copper control and red water. This project will examine external corrosion, which affects the structural integrity of the pipe and makes it vulnerable to leaks and breakage. After identifying the causes of external corrosion, the study will find economical solutions for each type of corrosion and verify them through field trials.
