The participants were measured for isometric strength of the dorsiflexors, plantarflexors, invertors and evertors, passive and active dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, inversion and eversion ROM, anterior drawer test and weight-bearing lunge test.

Finding a cause for MTSS would increase the ability of the certified athletic trainer (ATC) to effectively prevent and treat MTSS. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct a prospective investigation into the possible risk factors for MTSS. One hundred forty-six college athletes participated in the study. Each subject participated in a physical evaluation and answered a health history questionnaire. When a subject developed symptoms of MTSS, they reported to an A TC who determined if MTSS was present. Twenty-nine subjects developed MTSS. Four variables (running history, previous history of MTSS, previous history of stress fracture, and orthotic use) were identified as being significantly different between the groups and were entered into the discrimiate analysis. Collectively, these variables explained 44.6% of MTSS group membership. The specific measures significantly predictive of MTSS group membership were running history (5.3%) and previous history of MTSS (39.3%). These findings reveal the importance of knowing an athlete's history of activity and injury. This knowledge may assist the A TC by revealing the athletes who may have a greater chance of developing MTSS.
