Book excerpt: This story unfolds like a mystery thriller...the action-packed, true, gripping account of the settleing down of planet Earth AFTER THE TOTAL WORLD WIPEOUT...and its effects upon human history. The Corpse Came Back! begins with the handful of refugees on board their survival vessel - the ship of Noah - and their journey into the unknown, new world. Of course, the skeptics will have their questions, such as: If the Ark floated above the mountains, however could they breathe in that high-altitude rarified atmosphere? How could the frail, timid platypus have migrated to Australia from Ararat? Surely marsupials must be an isolated evolutionary development - since their fossils are found nowhere else? Amazing scientific evidence that our biggest mountain ranges are barely 4,000+ years old. Was the Ice Age triggered by HEAT??? Why did civilization BEGIN in the mountains - instead of in the easily cultivated valleys and plains? Grand Canyon explorations - are there really ancient Egyptian remains in off-limits tunnels? The strange origin of the alphabet and much more!

She clutches a marriage announcement that has chilled her to the core. At last, there is a knock at the door, but it isn’t the person she was expecting. Instead she is greeted by a man she thought dead, a man who tortured her for far too long. She offers him a drink and then presses a pistol to his chest and pulls the trigger until the clip is empty and her tormenter is dead. In a state of panic, she calls the only man who can help—Miami’s toughest private detective, Mike Shayne—and lies. She says her name is Carla, that the dead man is her husband, and that it was her daughter, Vicky, who pulled the trigger. She may think she knows how to play the game, but she’ll soon find that Shayne is a dangerous man to toy with—and he doesn’t stay fooled for long. The Body Came Back is the 46th book in the Mike Shayne Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book Synopsis The Complete Folktales of A. N. Afanas'ev, Volume III by : Jack V. Haney
Download or read book The Complete Folktales of A. N. Afanas'ev, Volume III written by Jack V. Haney and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now, there has been no complete English-language version of the Russian folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev. This translation is based on L. G. Barag and N. V. Novikov’s edition, widely regarded as the authoritative Russian-language edition. The present edition includes commentaries to each tale as well as its international classification number. This third volume contains 305 tales, those numbered 319–579, as well as forty-five additional tales from among those denied publication by the Russian censors. The folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev represent the largest single collection of folktales in any European language and perhaps in the world. Widely regarded as the Russian Grimm, Afanas’ev collected folktales from throughout the Russian Empire in what are now regarded as the three East Slavic languages, Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian. In his lifetime, Afanas’ev published more than 575 tales in his most popular and best-known work, Narodnye russkie skazki. In addition to this basic collection, he prepared a volume of Russian legends, many on religious themes; a collection of mildly obscene tales, Russkie zavetnye skazki; and voluminous writings on Slavic folklife and mythology. His works were subject to the strict censorship of ecclesiastical and state authorities that lasted until the demise of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Overwhelmingly, his particular emendations were stylistic, while those of the censors mostly concerned content.

As he shares his adventures in walking between the worlds, we begin to understand that all times — past, future, and parallel — may be accessible now. Book excerpt: Mike Shayne is accused of homicide after a dying man stumbles into his office When an old friend calls begging to see him immediately, Mike Shayne is surprised to say the least. He hasn’t set eyes on Jim Lacy in ten years, and time has not been kind. Jim’s face is deeply wrinkled, and his eyes are glazed. His skin is gray—and there is blood seeping through his shirt. Jim mutters a few last words as he collapses on Shayne’s office floor. His stomach is filled with lead and he is dead before he hits the ground. Shayne reaches into Lacy’s pocket and pulls out his wallet. Emptying it, he finds $200—enough for a retainer fee. Mike Shayne has never let a client’s murder go unpunished, and he will not rest until he catches the men who shot Jim Lacy and sent him to die. But first he will have to convince the police that he was not the man who pulled the trigger. Download or read book The Corpse written by Christine Quigley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-10-27 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries, different cultures have established a variety of procedures for handling and disposing of corpses. Often the methods are directly associated with the deceased's position in life, such as a pharaoh's mummification in Egypt or the cremation of a Buddhist. Treatment by the living of the dead over time and across cultures is the focus of this study. Burial arrangements and preparations are detailed, including embalming, the funeral service, storage and transport of the body, and forms of burial. Autopsies and the investigative process of causes of deliberate death are fully covered. Preservation techniques such as cryonic suspension and mummification are discussed, as well as a look at the "recycling" of the corpse through organ donation, donation to medicine, animal scavengers, cannibalism, and, of course, natural decay and decomposition. Mistreatments of a corpse are also covered.

Book excerpt: The "masterfully chilling" novel that inspired the hit AMC series (Entertainment Weekly). The men on board the HMS Terror — part of the 1845 Franklin Expedition, the first steam-powered vessels ever to search for the legendary Northwest Passage — are entering a second summer in the Arctic Circle without a thaw, stranded in a nightmarish landscape of encroaching ice and darkness. Endlessly cold, they struggle to survive with poisonous rations, a dwindling coal supply, and ships buckling in the grip of crushing ice. But their real enemy is even more terrifying. There is something out there in the frigid darkness: an unseen predator stalking their ship, a monstrous terror clawing to get in. “The best and most unusual historical novel I have read in years.” —Katherine A. Powers, Boston Globe

Book Synopsis The Old Nurse's Story and Other Tales by : Elizabeth Gaskell
Download or read book The Old Nurse's Story and Other Tales written by Elizabeth Gaskell and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Old Nurse’s Story and Other Tales’ is a collection of eleven short stories from the much-loved Victorian author, Elizabeth Gaskell. The title story follows the strange and supernatural happenings which have affected four generations of the Furnivall family, who live in a spooky gothic mansion in the midst of a bleak and deserted moorland. A haunting and atmospheric collection of spooky short stories, which fans of Emily Brontë’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ and Henry James’ ‘The Turn of the Screw’ will also enjoy. Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) is an enduringly popular and highly regarded English novelist. Born in Chelsea, London, Elizabeth was sent to live with her aunt in Knutsford, Cheshire after her mother died, a place which would provide inspiration for some of her most popular works, including ‘Cranford’. A sociable and lively young woman, Elizabeth married Minister William Gaskell in 1832 and settled in Manchester. An industrial hub and the scene of much political and social change, her time in Manchester influenced much of her writing. Her first novel, ‘Mary Barton’ focussed on the appalling and impoverished living conditions of those living in Northern industrial cities and was a huge success, sparking the interest of notable figures such as Charles Dickens, who invited Elizabeth to contribute to the periodicals he edited. An active humanitarian, her works dealt sympathetically with the plight of the poorest in society, and she did not shy away from controversial topics such as prostitution and illegitimacy. A close friend of Charlotte Brontë, Elizabeth also wrote a highly acclaimed biography of the author in 1857. Some of her best known and most loved novels include ‘Cranford’, ‘North and South’ and the posthumously published ‘Wives and Daughters’, all of which have been adapted for TV by the BBC, most recently ‘Cranford’ starring Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, and Greg Wise. Elizabeth Gaskell is regarded as one of the most important novelists of the Victorian era.
