Book Synopsis A General Purpose Technology at Work by : Nathan Rosenberg

Book excerpt: The steam engine is widely regarded as the icon of the Industrial Revolution and a prime example of a 'General Purpose Technology, ' and yet its contribution to growth is far from transparent. This paper examines the role that a particular innovative design in steam power, the Corliss engine, played in the intertwined processes of industrialization and urbanization that characterized the growth of the US economy in the late 19th century. Waterpower offered abundant and cheap energy, but restricted the location of manufacturing just to areas with propitious topography and climate. Steam engines offered the possibility of relaxing this severe constraint, allowing industry to locate where key considerations such as access to markets for inputs and outputs directed. The enhanced performance of the Corliss engine as well as its fuel efficiency helped tip the balance in favor of steam in the fierce contest with waterpower. With the aid of detailed data on the location of Corliss engines and waterwheels and a two-stage estimation strategy, we show that the deployment of Corliss engines indeed served as a catalyst for the massive relocation of industry away from rural areas and into large urban centers, thus fueling agglomeration economies, and attracting further population growth. This illustrates what we believe is an important aspect of the dynamics of GPTs, whether it is electricity in the early 20th century or Information Technologies in the present era: the fact that GPTs induce the widespread and more efficient relocation of economic activity, which in turn fosters long-term growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corliss Engine Since the issue of the patent, in the year 1849, to Geo. H. Corliss, for certain improvements in the working of steam-engines, and covering the admission of steam to the cylinder by the combined action of a governor, to determine the point of cut-off at which a liberating valve-gear shall act, and thus allow a certain amount of expansion to take place in the cylinder before the end of a stroke is completed, I think it will be conceded by all fair-minded engineers, when we come to look over the ground carefully, covered by the proposition, that no improvement has been made since that time, up to this date, in the economy of working steam expansively as exemplified by this system. This assumption may be questioned even now by a few zealous persons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Corliss Steam Engine and the United States Economy in the Late Nineteenth-century by : Jing Li
Download or read book The Corliss Steam Engine and the United States Economy in the Late Nineteenth-century written by Jing Li and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Nathan Rosenberg and Manuel Trajtenberg's study, my research focuses on the effects that the Corliss engines had on the growth of the US economy in the late nineteenth century. I study how some economic variables, including the population, affected the utilization of Corliss steam engines. I use both the number of buyers of the Corliss engines and the horsepower generated to measure the utilization of Corliss steam engines. The overall steam engines are also considered as the dependent variable to compare with the Corliss engine. I also study how the Corliss steam engines, as well as other factors, influenced population growth. The OLS, Poisson and Negative Binomial models are used. Because of the recombination of counties over time, both the processed data set and the reduced data set are utilized in the models. My results show both consistency and inconsistency with Rosenberg and Trajtenberg (2004).
