Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology and Control of Citrus Insects and Mites Earlier bulletins published by the University of California on citrus insects have been out of print for several-years, and the aim of the present publication is to replace in part those earlier bulletins, for which there has been a constant demand, as well as to bring the subject Of citrus-insect control in California up to date. Since many of the requests call for detailed information on the biology of the pests, and because such information is least available, it seems desirable to cover that phase of the subject as adequately, as the limited space in this publica tion will allow. The order of discussion of the pests is more or less in accordance with their classification as they occur in the animal kingdom, and not necessarily in accordance with their relative importance as pests of citrus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Fruit Insects It has been estimated that the average cost of fumigation per tree, taking the whole of the citrus belt, amounts to about 30 or 40 cents, which means an expense of approximately $30 to $40 per acre, and this is done on an average about every other year. This is intensive insect fighting, but when the improved market value of the fruit is considered, it is money judiciously spent with such a valuable crop as the orange or lemon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biological Control of Mealybugs Attacking Citrus Great difficulty has always been experienced in the attempt to control these insects on citrus trees. The ordinary methods of control for scale insects, fi.e., Spraying and fumigation, have uniformly failed to bring relief, even when applied at much greater strength than has been necessary to handle satisfactorily such pests as the black, red, and purple scales. Much experimental work has been carried out. By the United States Department of Agriculture, the Citrus Experiment Station, and the County Agricultural Commissioners, in the hope of discovering improved methods or more satisfactory insecticides for the purpose, but the resistance of these insects has been so great that it has seemed practically impossible to destroy them without seriously damaging the tree and fruit. The situation led entomologists to give consideration to radically different methods for the suppression of mealybugs, and out of this has come the biological method, the discussion of which is the pri mary object of this bulletin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Control of the Citrus Mealybug in Florida These entomogenous fungi are worth millions of dollars to the citrus industry. Owing to their excellent work, oranges and grape fruit are grown at a profit in many parts of the State where no money whatsoever is spent on artificial remedial measures. It should not be inferred that spraying to control citrus pests is not advised. A greater profit can be enjoyed when sprays are employed judiciously, particularly if they are utilized in a way to supplement the work of the fungi, but citrus fruits can be grown at a profit in the absence of any artificial measures, a condition probably not possible, for ih stance, in the apple industry. The inestimable value of the entomo genous fungi to the citrus grower of Florida is thus evident. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Citrus Fruits and Methods for Combating Them The Object of this bulletin is to describe the life history Of some Of the various insects injurious to citrus trees, and also to give the various insecticides which are being used and their effect on both trees and insects. For years the planters Of Florida have been spraying their trees with various emulsions to keep their fruit clean and trees healthy. The time has arrived for planters in Porto Rico to pay more atten tion to the appearance of their fruit if they desire to realize top market prices. In order to grow clean fruit more spraying at the proper time is necessary. The experiment stations Of the United States have shown that beneficial results may be Obtained by spray ing. Orchards that produced practically nothing but worthless fruit have been sprayed, with the result that 90 to 95 per cent of their fruit 18 perfect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Next to the scale insects, red spiders and mites are the most important pests of citrus trees in California. On account of their small size, and because the foliage and fruit of the tree are not conspicuously marred either by their presence or by the covering of sooty mold fungus, as is the case with some of the scale insects, the actual injury done by red spiders and mites is not always appreciated. _their distribution is very general over the citrus sections, and they may be found in some numbers at most any season of the year. So long as they do not become numer ous the injury they do is, not important and in such cases it is not good economy to apply treatment. Because of their more orless continual presence in scattering numbers some growers take red spiders as a mat ter of course, and fail to recognize their importance when they become abundant and do damage, or come to a realization of their injurious nature after most of the damage has been done and the spiders them selves begin to disappear, as they often do. While, therefore, the presence of spiders in scattering numbers should be the cause Of no par ticular concern, the presence of. Excessive numbers of spiders should be the cause of enough concern for the grower to start immediately to apply control measures. Dropping of the leaves and fruit is the ultimate result of red spider injury. But the cause should be checked long before this extreme effect is evident. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Control of the Argentine Ant in California Citrus Orchards The spread Of the Argentine ant in California bears an important relation to citrus growing, a relation certain to become more promi nent with wider distribution and long-established infestations. The very severe damage which this pest can sometimes do in citrus orchards has been impressively stated by N ewell and Barber 2 as follows: The bearing qualities Of an orchard are severely impaired by the second season of infestation, the crop is almost entirely lost by the third season and the trees are dying by the fourth year Of infestation. This conclusion is based on conditions in Louisiana, and in this respect it should be noted that no systematic effort is made in that State to control citrus scale pests. Such' extreme damage has never been Observed under California orchard conditions where fumigation and other insecticidal control measures are prac ticed constantly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Citrus Insects of Tropical Asia All species of citrus are attacked, though the heaviest infestations are found upon lemon and pummelo. As many as 84 adults have been reared from a single lemon. NO thoroughly satisfactory means of control has as yet been devel Oped for this species. The eggs are resistant to kerosene emulsion, and the larvae are inaccessible to contact sprays during their entire period of development except for the short time in which they wander about in search for a place in which to pupate. Kerosene emulsion will kill a considerable number of these larvae and of the pupae, but. It must be applied frequently because of the overlapping Of the generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Reasons for Spraying to Control Insect and Mite Enemies of Citrus Trees in Florida As another instance, in a grapefruit grove at Safety Harbor 84 trees left without treatment during the summer Of 1914 averaged two-thirds of a box per tree less than the trees adjoining which were sprayed The reduction in the yield due to failure to spray was caused by the smaller size of the fruit resulting from rust mite attack. There Seems to be no evidence that the actual number of grapefruit on the unsprayed trees was less than, on the sprayed trees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fumigation Investigations in California Early in July, 1907, the writer received a commission to investi gate the use Of hydrocyanic - acid gas in the. Control of insect pests of citrus trees in southern California. Acting under detailed instruc tions from Mr. C. L. Marlatt, the Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agriculture, he spent the latter part Of July and the following three months in a thorough field investigation to acquaint himself with the condi tions of citrus culture throughout southern California, the distribu tion of the different citrus pests and the damage caused by them, the existing methods for their control, and the status of fumigation as then practiced in the various citrus districts. During. This period all the important citrus - producing sections south of Santa Barbara were Visited, and local conditions were carefully examined. This work was greatly facilitated by the hearty cooperation of the differ ent county horticultural commissioners, who gave their time freely and greatly assisted the writer in becoming familiar with all the features of the problem in their respective counties. Natural resistance is one of the safest, most practical, and at the same time one of the most economical approaches to biological control yet conceived. Indeed, the potential of this method of con trolling insect pests staggers the imagination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
