Book excerpt: by the completion of large aperture synthesis radio telescopes, which have permitted a detailed mapping of radio sources, and by the development of very long base-line interferometry (VLBI), with 4 3 resolutions down to 10- - 10- arc sec, which for the first time has rendered possible radio investigations of the structures of the very compact radio sources found in galactic nuclei and quasars. The observations obtained with this new instrumentation, combined with the work in the optical, infrared and X-ray domain, have made great strides in recent years toward improved testing of radio source models. We feel that the material presented at the Institute represents a rather complete and comprehensive coverage of the present status of studies of non-thermal radio sources, though one is aware of rapid developments in this field of research. The various aspects of this exciting subject were covered in a series of lectures, pre sented in this volume, totaling 44 hours and in 14 topical seminars given by the participants. I wish to express my gratitude to the Scientific Affairs Divi sion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the generous support given to the course. Sincere thanks are also due to Mr. L. Baldeschi for helping with the organization of the meeting and for drawing a number of figures contained in this volume; to Mrs. B. Mandel for the patient typing and help in the editing; and to Mr. R. Primavera for the photographic reproduction of part of the figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideal text for a one-semester course in radio astronomy Essential Radio Astronomy is the only textbook on the subject specifically designed for a one-semester introductory course for advanced undergraduates or graduate students in astronomy and astrophysics. It starts from first principles in order to fill gaps in students' backgrounds, make teaching easier for professors who are not expert radio astronomers, and provide a useful reference to the essential equations used by practitioners. This unique textbook reflects the fact that students of multiwavelength astronomy typically can afford to spend only one semester studying the observational techniques particular to each wavelength band. Essential Radio Astronomy presents only the most crucial concepts—succinctly and accessibly. It covers the general principles behind radio telescopes, receivers, and digital backends without getting bogged down in engineering details. Emphasizing the physical processes in radio sources, the book's approach is shaped by the view that radio astrophysics owes more to thermodynamics than electromagnetism. Proven in the classroom and generously illustrated throughout, Essential Radio Astronomy is an invaluable resource for students and researchers alike. The only textbook specifically designed for a one-semester course in radio astronomy Starts from first principles Makes teaching easier for astronomy professors who are not expert radio astronomers Emphasizes the physical processes in radio sources Covers the principles behind radio telescopes and receivers Provides the essential equations and fundamental constants used by practitioners Supplementary website includes lecture notes, problem sets, exams, and links to interactive demonstrations An online illustration package is available to professors

Book excerpt: An investigation of certain discrete radio sources, including the experimental measurement of their flux densities and a theoretical interpretation of their spectra, has been carried out for the 20-40 MHz frequency range. The observations were made at 22.30, 26.70, 33.45 and 38.75 MHz using the 1000-ft radio telescope of the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory. Descriptions of the observations and the data analysis are given, together with a discussion of the limitations imposed on the measurements by the ionosphere and the radio telescope. The flux densities of eight discrete radio sources at the four operating frequencies, measured relative to Taurus A, are presented. A detailed error analysis was carried out; anticipated errors are given for each flux density value. (Author).

Book excerpt: The spectra of most non-thermal sources can be closely represented by a simple power law at least between 40 and 1400 Mc/s. The distribution of spectral indices for the sources away from the galactic plane is sharply peaked about a median value of -0.76, while the sources near the plane have a considerably wider dispersion of indices. The small-diameter, relatively weak sources tend to have relatively flat spectra. The most luminous sources, with high surface brightnesses, have normal spectra at decimeter wavelengths but are considerably flatter at meter wavelengths, suggesting that they are younger sources where equilibrium between the rate of injection of relativistic electrons and the rate of radiation loss has not yet been established. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extragalactic radio sources are among the most unusual and spectacular objects in the universe, with sizes in excess of millions of light years, radiated energies over ten times those of normal galaxies, and a unique morphology. They reveal some of the most dramatic physical events ever seen and provide essential clues to the basic evolutionary tracks followed by all galaxies and groups of galaxies. In The Physics of Extragalactic Radio Sources, David De Young provides a clearly written overview of what is currently known about these objects. A unique feature of the book is De Young's emphasis on the physical processes associated with extragalactic radio sources: their evolution, their environment, and their use as probes to solve other astrophysical problems. He also makes extensive use of the large amount of data now available from observations at x-ray, optical, and radio wavelengths to illustrate his main points. The Physics of Extragalactic Radio Sources will be a comprehensive introduction to the field for graduate students and a useful summary for astrophysicists.

Book excerpt: Radio Galaxies: Radiation Transfer, Dynamics, Stability and Evolution of a Synchrotron Plasmon deals with the physics of a region in space containing magnetic field and thermal and relativistic particles (a plasmon). The synchrotron emission and absorption of this region are discussed, along with the properties of its spectrum; its linear and circular polarization; transfer of radiation through such a region; its dynamics and expansion; and interaction with external medium. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume explores the stability, turbulence, and acceleration of particles in a synchrotron plasmon as well as its application to the physics of radio galaxies. The discussion begins with a description of extragalactic radio sources and their properties, followed by an analysis of the emission and absorption of synchrotron radiation. Subsequent chapters focus on the transfer of polarized radiation in a magnetoactive plasma; hydromagnetics and hydromagnetic stability; confinement and structure of extended radio sources; and radio-tail galaxies. The book also considers compact radio sources before concluding with an evaluation of radio source theories. This monograph is addressed primarily to radio astronomers and graduate students working on the interpretation of observational data.

Book excerpt: The present set of chapters by members of the staff of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory deals with the basic fields of research concerned with radio astronomy outside the solar system. The emphasis in this volume is on the type of data available and its interpretation. Basic theory is considered only where absolutely necessary, and little discussion of receivers or techniques is entered into in most of the chapters. The book is intended to take over where most textbooks on radio astronomy leave off, that is, in the discussion of what is actually known from the research done. In addition there is a chapter on the technical aspects of inter ferometry and aperture synthesis, since so much of modern radio astronomy depends, and will depend in an ever increasing manner, on such tools. The editors want to stress that the chapters were not necessarily expected to be compre hensive reviews of any of the fields being covered, but rather, overall outlines which the in dividual authors feIt would be suitable for graduate students and interested workers in other fields. As a result, the lists of references are not complete. This only refiects the preferences of the individual authors and not the relative merit of those references incIuded or omitted.
