Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitution of Matter The lectures which form the body of this book were delivered at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in the month of February, 1913, for The Norman W. Harris Lectures of this year. The fact that they were actual lec tures accounts for the form in which the text is given; and the further fact that the audi ence for whom they were prepared was com posed, for a large part, of people unfamiliar with both the facts and the methods of science must be accepted as the justification for the treatment of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature and Life: Facts and Doctrines Relating to the Constitution of Matter, the New Dynamics, and the Philosophy of Nature This volume contains a series of essays written and published at different times, some of a general character, and others more special, and all relating to the activity of natural forces, especially those of life. The mere bringing together of these fragments has presented an opportunity of completing a methodical and uniform whole, combining exactness in details with generality of doctrines, and distinctly tracing the precise aspect of each group of phenomena in the picture of the close and universal relations that bind the whole together. An exposition is thus offered under an elementary form, in language freed from technical dress, of the most essential truths established of late by physics, chemistry, and biology, regarding the mechanism of natural forces, and the arrangement and combination of the fundamental springs of being in the world, especially in the living world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity and Matter In these Lectures given at Yale University in May, 1903, I have attempted to discuss the bear ing of the recent advances made in Electrical Science on our views of the Constitution of Matter and the Nature of Electricity; two questions which are probably so intimately connected, that the solution of the one would supply that of the other. A characteristic feature of recent Electri cal Researches, such as the study and discovery of Cathode and Rontgen Rays and Radioactive Substances, has been the very especial degree in which they have involved the relation between Matter and Electricity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Constitution of the United States Whatever may be the form of government, in the last analysis the people are the sovereigns, and the exercise of sovereignty goes with a majority of the military power. For if there is an absolute or hereditary ruler, he is so because a majority of the people, or a majority of the arms-bearers, have chosen that he shall be, or because they submit to his continuance. Whenever thev are agreed to have it otherwise, his reign comes to an end, no matter if his empire and his prescriptive rights be a thousand years old. They may execute him, as they executed Charles I and Louis XVI or they may simply depose him as they deposed Dom Pedro II of Brazil. They may or may not be wise in doing this, and may or may not be fortunate m their new government; but the sovereignty resides in them, and they have ex ercised it. When they have enthroned a king, he may call himself a sovereign, and speak of them as his subj ects - and in theory they are such - but in fact he is their servant, and if the service is bad they will not accept it forever. If they prescribe limits to his powers, that prescription of limits, as far as it goes, is a constitution. It is common to speak of his giving them a constitution, but instead it is they that give one to him, for it is only by their sufierance that he is on the throne at all, and usually it is be cause he has been made to realize this that he gra ciously grants the people a constitution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Theoretical Chemistry: With Special Reference to the Constitution of Chemical Compounds The science of chemistry has to deal with everything connected with the deepest-seated changes in composition which the different forms of matter undergo. The first observations, and for a long time the only observations, made on chemical changes were qualitative. The fact that a substance A when brought in contact with a substance B gives the substance C or the substances C and D was noted; but very little, if anything, more was learned te garding the change. During this qualitative period a great many facts were discovered, many new substances were brought to light, and general methods of preparation for certain classes of compounds were devised. I give reasons for thinking that the number of corpuscles in an atom of an element is not greatly in excess of the atomic weight of the element, thus in particular that the number of corpuscles in an atom of hydrogen is not large. Some writers seem to think that this makes the conception of the model atom more difficult. I am unable to follow this view; it seems to me to make the conception easier, since it makes the number of possible atoms much more nearly equal to the number of the chemical elements. It has, however, an important bearing on our conception of the origin of the mass of the atom, as if the number of corpuscles in the atom is of the same order as the atomic weight we cannot regard the mass of an atom as mainly or even appreciably due to the mass of the corpuscles. I am indebted to Mr. G. W. C. Kave for assisting in revising the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
