Working in this thesis has been for me an activity of retrospection and personal renewal. It has been a challenge and an opportunity. I have learned to look at my missionary life and the Madagascar missionary context in a new light. In this I hope that the Madagascar Church and society may have full benefit from the journey undertaken in this thesis. The context of Madagascar needs a trajectory of renewal in religious life and mission in this third millenium. The Church's understanding and practice of her mission, as well as her motives, evolve as societies encounter one another and as they evolve. The tension between faith and daily life of people in this fast-changing world obliges consecrated life in Madagascar to move on, rethink and reframe its vision-mission. A mission that starts from above seems to be no longer fitting for the Malagasy context today. In Madagascar where there are many Churches and diverse religions, an evangelization which aims to bring people into the Catholic Church as possessor of truth sounds imperialistic. In Malagasy society threatened by division, consecrated life is called to facilitate reconciliation and communion. The Madagascar Church and society today urge consecrated persons to understand their mission beyond a simple observance of laws in their convent and in the Catholic Church. Consecrated life should not be a way of neglecting the reality in the world. A total donation to God and to be a sign of future life should never be an excuse not to face the present situation in this world. Consecrated men and women are called to commit themselves with the people around them for the sake of God's Reign in the world, and to bring people to the fullness of life. The mission of consecrated life does not happen in the abstract ; it must concretely respond to the challenges of the time. The issues of poverty, culture, religions, and formation in Madagascar today oblige consecrated life to move towards a new praxis. Vatical Council II documents propose a new perspective on the mission of the Church, a new perspective on consecrated life, and on its mission. It is also proposed that a theology of mission must adhere to constants and yet flexibly and creatively respond to different contexts. Therefore, mission of consecrated life in Madagascar today must start from below. Consecrated men and women must see and have concern for the present Malagasy experiences. They have to see the condition and situation of people around them, they have to discern it with evangelical criteria and according to Christ's message of God's Reign and they have to act to respond to the needs and challenges of the situations around them. That is the reason why we use a pastoral approach of "see-discern-act" in this study. A "missionary is not a person who always brings something and gives it to the people where he/she carries out a mission. He/she has to learn from context and human experiences. It means, a missionary must be ready to receive in a dialogical way from others, not only to give insights.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.

This document is "the keystone" of the Councils whole Magisterium. It focuses on the whole Church as a communion of charity. With it, according to John Paul II, the Second Vatican Council wished to shed light on the Churchs reality: a wonderful but complex reality consisting of human and divine elements, visible and invisible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Second Vatican Council, when each Religious Institute was encouraged to research its charism, some Institutes experienced a tension between their charism and their mission, or even difficulty identifying what their charism was. This book is a study of the theological understanding of charism and of mission in relation to Religious Life within the Catholic Church. While this topic has featured in much Roman Catholic theological literature since Vatican II, there appears to be a dearth of in-depth studies. This book addresses this apparent lacuna. It draws particularly on the work of two major theologians, Jean-Marie Roger Tillard OP and Sandra Marie Schneiders IHM, who have reflected at length on charism and mission in the period leading up to Vatican II and on the implementation of its documents with respect to Religious Life. The very significant contributions of Tillard and Schneiders on the topic provide Religious, as well as others who want to know and understand Religious Life, with an interesting and motivating insight into charism and mission in Religious Life. Within the Roman Catholic Church, a “Year of Consecrated Life” has just drawn to a close, and this book forms a background and a response to Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter to “all Consecrated People on the occasion of the Year of Consecrated Life” (November 2014), which invited Religious to reflect on these aspects that are essential to the life they have chosen to live.

Book excerpt: This is intended to be a very simple book, an elementary treatment of a few basic ideas in Christian spirituality. Hence it should be useful to any Christian, and indeed to anyone who wants to acquaint himself with some principles of the interior life as it is understood in the Catholic Church. Nothing is here said of such subjects as “contemplation” or even “mental prayer.” And yet the book emphasizes what is at once the most common and the most mysterious aspect in the Christian life: grace, the power and the light of God in us, purifying our hearts, transforming us in Christ, making us true sons of God, enabling us to act in the world as his instruments for the good of all men and for his glory. This is therefore a meditation on some fundamental themes appropriate to the active life. It must be said at once that the active life is essential to every Christian. Clearly the active life must mean more than the life which is led in religious institutes of men and women who teach, care for the sick, and so on. (When one is talking of the “active life” as opposed to the “contemplative life,” this is the usual reference.) Here action is not looked at in opposition to contemplation, but as an expression of charity and as a necessary consequence of union with God by baptism.

Book excerpt: Still, today may religious men and women be for the Church and for the World, the outposts of care for all of the poor and for all material, moral and spiritual poverty, and examples in overcoming every form of egoism through the logic of the Gospel which teaches us to trust in the Providence of God.
