Book Synopsis Plurality, Conjunction and Events by : P. Lasersohn
Download or read book Plurality, Conjunction and Events written by P. Lasersohn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plurality, Conjunction and Events presents a novel theory of plural and conjoined phrases, in an event-based semantic framework. It begins by reviewing options for treating the alternation between `collective' and `distributive' readings of sentences containing plural or conjoined noun phrases, including analyses from both the modern and the premodern literature. It is argued that plural and conjoined noun phrases are unambiguously group-denoting, and that the collective/distributive distinction therefore must be located in the predicates with which these noun phrases combine. More specifically, predicates must have a hidden argument place for events; the collective/distributive distinction may then be represented in the part/whole structure of these events. This allows a natural treatment of `collectivizing' adverbial expressions, and of `pluractional' affixes; it also allows a unified semantics for conjunction, in which conjoined sentences and predicates denote groups of events, much like conjoined noun phrases denote groups of individuals.
Book Synopsis Connie the Conjunction by : Coert Voorhees
Download or read book Connie the Conjunction written by Coert Voorhees and published by Grammaropolis. This book was released on 2019-04 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connie the Conjunction Nobody in all of Grammaropolis has more style than Connie; she simply knows how to put things together. After a bump on the head makes her give bad advice, she uses all the conjunctions at her disposal to set everything right again. Connie the Conjunction is part of the nine-book Meet the Parts of Speech series starring the eight parts of speech, who are personified based on the roles they play in the sentence. From the shady pronoun always trying to take the noun's place to the motherly conjunction who just wants everyone to get along, the Meet the Parts of Speech series uses the mechanics of character and story (plot, motivation, setting, etc.) to breathe life into what has traditionally been unengaging subject matter. Book Synopsis Processing interclausal Relationships by : Jean Costermans
Download or read book Processing interclausal Relationships written by Jean Costermans and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 10 years, more and more linguistic and psycholinguistic research has been devoted to the study of discourse and written texts. Much of this research deals with the markers that underline the connections and the breaks between clauses and sentences plus the use of these markers -- by adults and children -- in the production and comprehension of oral and written material. In this volume, major observations and theoretical views from both sides of the Atlantic are brought together to appeal to a wide range of linguists, psychologists, and speech therapists. The volume presents contributions from researchers interested specifically in adult language and from others concerned with developmental aspects of language. Some contributors deal primarily with production, whereas others concentrate on comprehension. Some direct their attention to oral discourse while others focus on written texts. To preserve overall coherence, however, the contributors were given the following recommendations: * With regard to the level of linguistic analysis, the emphasis should be on the clause level -- more particularly, on the relationships between clauses. * Special emphasis should also be placed on linguistic markers (e.g., connectives, markers of segmentation, punctuation). * An overview of a given field of research should be offered, and current research should be put into perspective. * For contributors in the developmental field, attention should be paid to the fact that an account of the acquisition of some language functions throughout childhood should be included only if general principles of interclause relations that might be masked by the exclusive examination of adult evidence could be derived from it.
