Book excerpt: First written in the 12th century, Conference of the Birds is an allegory of extreme measures for extreme times -- the story of birds seeking a king is the story of all of us seeking God. Like the birds, we may be excited for the journey, until we realize that we must give up our fears and hollow desires, that our journey will be long and hard. Like the duck, we may not wish to leave the water. Like the nightingale, we may want to stay close to our roses. Direct and to the point, Masani's translation, made in the early part of the 19th century, is particularly apropos for our early 21st century times -- both are periods of intense spiritual seeking.

Book excerpt: Farid ud-Din Attar occupies a prominent place in the roll of distinguished Persian poets. His most famous work on Sufism, written eight centuries ago, is the Mantiq-ut-Tayr, or the "Colloquy of the Birds," an allegorical poem in which the gifted mystic describes the quest of the Birds (symbolising Sufi pilgrims) for the Simurg (the Lord of Creation). I should explain that I have omitted a good deal which I thought would not interest a foreign reader or would tend to obscure rather than illuminate the salient points of the discourse. I have also thought fit to give a free rather than literal translation of the selected passages, so that the work may be of interest to the casual reader as well as to the student of spiritual and mystic lore.

Book excerpt: FIVE FAMOUS ALLEGORIES IN SUFI POETRY Conference of the Birds; Secrets of Birds, Flowers, Nature, Animals & Insects; Cat & Mouse; The Fish; The Spider. Translations & Introductions by Paul Smith Farid al-din 'Attar (d. 1221) was a grear Sufi poet who composed over 5o books. His most loved, apart from his ghazals is 'The Conference of the Birds' in masnavi (rhyming couplets) form (translated here by Edward FitzGerald) that would influence all the following poets in their writing of Sufi philosophy in the way of allegories, using Nature. Azz-eddin al-Muqaddasi (d. 1280) is famous for one book, his 'Secret of Birds, Flowers' etc. in prose and poetry. "It has been said, perhaps with truth, that there is no document of such age to touch this one for a combination of mystical insight and understanding of human psychology." K. Winstone-Hamilton. Mouse & Cat by Obeyd Zakani is a satirical, epic allegory that was influential at the time it was composed (14th c.) and has remained so for the past 600 years. It is more than just a story for children (that some say brought about the cartoon of Tom & Jerry)... it is a story of the stupidity of the false power of those in power and a warning to all that such blind ambition always leads to destruction at the hands of one even more powerful. Sufi poet Shah Da'i (1406-1464) takes his clue from 'Attar and tells the marvellous allegory of the fish who go in search of an answer to their problem from the Ancient Wise Fish. Iran's recent great female poet Parvin Etesami (1907-1941) tells the simple but deep allegory of the lazy man and the hard-working spider in such a clever and engrossing way that her reason for telling it is subtle but truly enlightening. The correct rhymes and hpefully, the meanings are achieved. ILLUSTRATED. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 460 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. "It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of many mystical works in English into Persian. Paul Smith (b.1945) is an Australian poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Mu'in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Omar, Seemab and others and his poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and screenplays.

Book excerpt: The "Conference of the Birds" is a 12th-century Sufi allegory that has beenescribed as the Islamic "Canterbury Tales". Written by an Iranian Sufi, arid ud-Din Attar, who was a major influence on the work of Rumi, it is thetory of the birds' quest for an ideal king, and an allegory for the Sufi (orystical Islamic) path to enlightenment. Though hugely popular andnfluential in the Islamic world, it is still relatively unfamiliar in theest. In this edition, the poet Raficq Abdulla has reinterpreted key extractso make the insight of Sufism accessible to a contemporary reader. Each pages decorated with illustrations taken from Persian manuscripts in theriental collection at the British Library.;The poem uses the birds' journeyo describe the stages of Sufi enlightenment, and each bird represents auman archetype. At the end of the tale, the birds discover tht what they areeeking is none other than themselves: in Sufism, enlightenment is unity withhe Divine, and the way to God is inward, through one's own soul.

Book excerpt: Conference of the Birds is John Heilpern's true story of an extraordinary journey. In December 1972, the director Peter Brook and an international troupe of actors (Helen Mirren and Yoshi Oida among them) left their Paris base to emerge again in the Sahara desert. It was the start of an 8,500-mile expedition through Africa without precedent in the history of theater. Brook was in search of a new beginning that has since been revealed in all his work--from Conference of the Birds and Carmen to The Mahabharata and beyond. At the heart of John Heilpern's brilliant account of the African experiment is a story that became a search for the miraculous.

Book excerpt: The Persian epic that inspired Eric Clapton's unforgettable love song "Layla" and that Lord Byron called "the Romeo and Juliet of the East," in a masterly new translation A Penguin Classic The iconic love story of the Middle East, by a twelfth-century Persian poet who has been compared to Shakespeare for his subtlety, inventiveness, and dramatic force, Layli and Majnun tells of star-crossed lovers whose union is tragically thwarted by their families and whose passion continues to ripple out across the centuries. Theirs is a love that lasts a lifetime, and in Nezami's immortal telling, erotic longing blends with spiritual self-denial in an allegory of Sufi aspiration, as the amenities of civilization give way to the elemental wilderness, desire is sublimated into a mystical renunciation of the physical world, and the soul confronts its essence. This is a tour de force of Persian literature, in a translation that captures the extraordinary power and virtuosity of the original.
