Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete: Its Use in Building and the Construction of Concrete Walls, Floors, Etc But if a house has a showy portico, with a flight of stone steps leading thereto, or some other form of attraction, it will - with by far the greater number atone for a multitude of shortcomings in other respects; and if moreover the walls are brick-built, the bricks coloured. To make them look uniform and hide their defects, and the joints tuck pointed, scarcely one person in a thousand would consider for one moment, whether or not they would absorb an indefinite amount of rain, and what must become of all the moisture they imbibe. If the walls will just, and but just, keep the wet from penetrating as far as the paper-hangings, the house is declared to be per fectly dry, and no thought is given as to the mass of damp material encompassing the inmates on all sides. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Construction About the Home and on the Farm The development of the American Portland Cement industry during the past decade has been one of the marvels of the age, and while Portland Cement Concrete has come to be recognized as the ideal building material for heavy work, comparatively little attention has been given to its use in the smaller f. Construction about the home and on the farm. That active interest, however, is taken in this important subject by the suburbanite, the villager, and the farmer, is evidenced by the large number of letters of inquiry received by the agricultural and technical journals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Reinforced Concrete Standards: For the Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings Among the many publications relating to reinforced concrete, there seem to be few that answer the requirements of the architectural designer. The majority of architects are men who studied for their profession before any thorough investigation of reinforced concrete construction had been made. They are now called upon by their clients to design in a material requiring special and intimate study of its characteristics, and the solution of intricate formulae to deter mine the proper composition, arrangement, and dimensions of its component parts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Factories: An Illustrated Review of the Principles of Construction of Reinforced Concrete Building, Including Reports of the Sub-Committee on Tests, the U. S. Geological Survey and the French Rules on Reinforced Concrete The subject of concrete and reinforced concrete is one of the most important matters that is now before the American public. So important has it been considered by those connected with engineering, that the leading societies in this field have associated themselves in the creation of a Joint Committee on Concrete and Reinforced Concrete, the members of which Committee are representatives of the following societies: American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society for Testing Materials; American Railway Engineering & Maintenance of Way Association, Association of American Portland Cement Manufacturers. In addition to this, the following organizations are lending their hearty co-operation in the work. National Board of Fire Underwriters; National Fire Protection Association; The Concrete Block Machine Manufacturers Association, and the National Association of Cement Users. The Work of the Committees This Committee on Concrete and Reinforced Concrete, as is well known, has been at work for nearly two years endeavoring to arrive at some definite conclusions on the important subjects entrusted to their care. It has been most fortunate in being able to secure, not only the co-operation of the leading colleges of the United States in its research investigations, but also the co-operation of the United States Advisory Board on Fuels and Structural Materials, which has a splendidly equipped laboratory at St. Louis. The importance of the work was recognized by the United States Government in a practical way by an appropriation of one hundred thousand dollars, for the purpose of carrying on the experiments required. The scope of the work is fully detailed in the report of the Sub Committee on Tests which, with its introductory matter, fully explains the field to be covered, the purpose of the investigations, and gives with great accuracy the subjects to be investigated in the line of concrete and reinforced concrete.
