This report describes the application of decision models in training, and presents the features of the CDT system as it is applied in electronic troubleshooting. Experimental evaluations have demonstrated that the adaptive decision model accurately models the student's performance and that the adaptively-selected instructions sometimes improve troubleshooting performance. The text includes an introduction to decision-making and operations research, four chapters consisting of indepth explanations of each technique, and instructions on the use of computer programs. PERT is used for planning and analyzing stages or activities in project development. The chapter includes step-by-step instruction in its use--with illustrated charts and examples--and an explanation of the GCPATH program for a PERT computer analysis. The third chapter centers on the use of Linear Programming, a mathematical technique designed to solve mathematically stated problems. It contains examples of the computer program LPRG and illustrates its use in several different situations. Queueing Theory, the subject of the fourth chapter, is a method for analyzing waiting line problems. Presented are the basic elements of the theory, discussion of its use, and an outline of solutions to waiting problems with the QUEUE computer program. The final chapter introduces Simulation Technique, where a variety of simulated solutions to problems are used instead of real life situations. This combines principles of artificial intelligence, decision theory, and adaptive techniques for teaching the procedures necessary to troubleshoot electronic circuits. ACTS emphasizes the realistic simulation of maintenance problems and focuses on enhancing the acquisition of decision-making skills which underlie successful electronic troubleshooting performance. The ACTS tracks a student's diagnostic and decision value structures, compares them to that of an expert, provides individualized feedback and help, and structures subsequent learning experiences. It is designated to facilitate transfer of these skills to an actual military environment. Preliminary studies indicate that the ACTS does not teach students to make more effective decisions troubleshooting electronic equipment. A large-scale study to further evaluate the training potential of the ACTS is planned for the second year, as well as to assess transfer to actual equipment following training with the ACTS. If a fundamental goal of education is to prepare students to act independently in the world--in other words, to make good choices--an ideal educational assessment would measure how well we are preparing students to do so. Current assessments, however, focus almost exclusively on how much knowledge students have accrued and can retrieve. In Measuring What Matters Most, Daniel Schwartz and Dylan Arena argue that choice should be the interpretive framework within which learning assessments are organized. Digital technologies, they suggest, make this possible; interactive assessments can evaluate students in a context of choosing whether, what, how, and when to learn. Schwartz and Arena view choice not as an instructional ingredient to improve learning but as the outcome of learning. Because assessments shape public perception about what is useful and valued in education, choice-based assessments would provide a powerful lever in this reorientation in how people think about learning. Schwartz and Arena consider both theoretical and practical matters. They provide an anchoring example of a computerized, choice-based assessment, argue that knowledge-based assessments are a mismatch for our educational aims, offer concrete examples of choice-based assessments that reveal what knowledge-based assessments cannot, and analyze the practice of designing assessments. Because high variability leads to innovation, they suggest democratizing assessment design to generate as many instances as possible. Finally, they consider the most difficult aspect of assessment: fairness. Choice-based assessments, they argue, shed helpful light on fairness considerations.

Book excerpt: This report describes an experiment investigating the effects of cognitive style, presentation format, and task content on learning. Cognitive style was described in terms of hemisphericity (i.e., left-or right-brain influence on perception). Presentation format consisted of graphics, text, and a combination of the two. The tasks consisted of knowledge, skill, attitude and decision-making. Fifty-nine college students participated in the study. In the knowledge task, subjects learned 10 pairs of words. In the skill task, subjects built an abstract model of a windmill. In the attitude task, subjects responded to facts and opinions on a current affairs topic. The decision-making task involved a maze problem. Subjects were tested immediately after training, 2 weeks after training and again at 4 weeks after training. Results indicated the following: Presentation format, gender, and hemisphericity all appeared to influence performance on the knowledge task. Presentation format and gender influenced performance on the skill task. Presentation format influenced performance on the decision-making task. This research is an initial exploration into adaptive training for computer-based systems. The ability to adapt to an individual's preferred learning style is a significantly challenge for designers of training systems. The basis for the adaptability may be grounded in individual differences in cognitive style. (SDW).
