This book was released on 1967 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let A be a general n x n complex matrix. We consider the problem of finding the invariant subspaces of A, i.e. solving AX = XM for X nonsingular and M block-diagonal. We first consider finding the eigensystem of A (i.e. M diagonal), assuming approximations to the eigenvalues are given. We show how to find approximate eigenvectors and rigorous machine bounds for the errors in the approximate eigensystem. Then we show how to find approximations and rigorous error bounds for higher-dimensional invariant subspaces of matrices which are close, in a sense we describe, to defective matrices, and for which poor results would be obtained for the eigensystem. Burroughs B5500 Extended Algol programs using these methods are also given. (Author).
Book Synopsis Introduction to Matrix Computations by : G. W. Stewart
Download or read book Introduction to Matrix Computations written by G. W. Stewart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1973-06-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical linear algebra is far too broad a subject to treat in a single introductory volume. Stewart has chosen to treat algorithms for solving linear systems, linear least squares problems, and eigenvalue problems involving matrices whose elements can all be contained in the high-speed storage of a computer. By way of theory, the author has chosen to discuss the theory of norms and perturbation theory for linear systems and for the algebraic eigenvalue problem. These choices exclude, among other things, the solution of large sparse linear systems by direct and iterative methods, linear programming, and the useful Perron-Frobenious theory and its extensions. However, a person who has fully mastered the material in this book should be well prepared for independent study in other areas of numerical linear algebra.

Book Synopsis Milestones in Matrix Computation by : Raymond Chan
Download or read book Milestones in Matrix Computation written by Raymond Chan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-02-22 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text presents and discusses some of the most influential papers in Matrix Computation authored by Gene H. Golub, one of the founding fathers of the field. The collection of 21 papers is divided into five main areas: iterative methods for linear systems, solution of least squares problems, matrix factorizations and applications, orthogonal polynomials and quadrature, and eigenvalue problems. Commentaries for each area are provided by leading experts: Anne Greenbaum, Ake Bjorck, Nicholas Higham, Walter Gautschi, and G. W. (Pete) Stewart. Comments on each paper are also included by the original authors, providing the reader with historical information on how the paper came to be written and under what circumstances the collaboration was undertaken. Including a brief biography and facsimiles of the original papers, this text will be of great interest to students and researchers in numerical analysis and scientific computation.

Book Synopsis Spectral Theory and Applications of Linear Operators and Block Operator Matrices by : Aref Jeribi
Download or read book Spectral Theory and Applications of Linear Operators and Block Operator Matrices written by Aref Jeribi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining recent mathematical developments in the study of Fredholm operators, spectral theory and block operator matrices, with a rigorous treatment of classical Riesz theory of polynomially-compact operators, this volume covers both abstract and applied developments in the study of spectral theory. These topics are intimately related to the stability of underlying physical systems and play a crucial role in many branches of mathematics as well as numerous interdisciplinary applications. By studying classical Riesz theory of polynomially compact operators in order to establish the existence results of the second kind operator equations, this volume will assist the reader working to describe the spectrum, multiplicities and localization of the eigenvalues of polynomially-compact operators.

Book Synopsis Spectral Theory of Multivalued Linear Operators by : Aymen Ammar
Download or read book Spectral Theory of Multivalued Linear Operators written by Aymen Ammar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of multivalued linear operators—or linear relations—is the one of the most exciting and influential fields of research in modern mathematics. Applications of this theory can be found in economic theory, noncooperative games, artificial intelligence, medicine, and more. This new book focuses on the theory of linear relations, responding to the lack of resources exclusively dealing with the spectral theory of multivalued linear operators. The subject of this book is the study of linear relations over real or complex Banach spaces. The main purposes are the definitions and characterization of different kinds of spectra and extending the notions of spectra that are considered for the usual one single-valued operator bounded or not bounded. The volume introduces the theory of pseudospectra of multivalued linear operators. The main topics include demicompact linear relations, essential spectra of linear relation, pseudospectra, and essential pseudospectra of linear relations. The volume will be very useful for researchers since it represents not only a collection of a previously heterogeneous material but is also an innovation through several extensions. Beginning graduate students who wish to enter the field of spectral theory of multivalued linear operators will benefit from the material covered, and expert readers will also find sources of inspiration.

Book Synopsis Spectra and Pseudospectra by : Lloyd N. Trefethen
Download or read book Spectra and Pseudospectra written by Lloyd N. Trefethen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-07 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, scientists, and engineers use matrices and operators and their eigenvalues in quantum mechanics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, acoustics, ecology, numerical analysis, and many other areas. However, in some applications the usual analysis based on eigenvalues fails. For example, eigenvalues are often ineffective for analyzing dynamical systems such as fluid flow, Markov chains, ecological models, and matrix iterations. That's where this book comes in. This is the authoritative work on nonnormal matrices and operators, written by the authorities who made them famous. Each of the sixty sections is written as a self-contained essay. Each document is a lavishly illustrated introductory survey of its topic, complete with beautiful numerical experiments and all the right references. The breadth of included topics and the numerous applications that provide links between fields will make this an essential reference in mathematics and related sciences.
