Book excerpt: This textbook provides you with all the up-to-date information and guidance you need to pass first time. It focuses systematically on each of the assessment criteria in the unit and provides a suggested structure for drafting responses to meet the requirements of the unit’s assessment criteria. As a lecturer / trainer / tutor / assessor / curriculum manager, how do you ensure: 1. that all individual learners’ needs are identified and met effectively? 2. that full account is taken of disability and learning difficulties when preparing and delivering teaching, learning and assessment strategies? 3. that strategies applied to reduce the barriers to learning experienced by disabled learners and those with learning difficulties are legitimate and reasonable and do not provide them with an unfair advantage? 4. that the most appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods are used?, and 5. that sessions are planned and delivered effectively (and evidenced accordingly as part of a MICRO-TEACH? This textbook addresses each of these questions, with supporting research as needed, while remaining tightly focused on the unit’s assessment criteria. Out of the three units of the Award in Education and Training, Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training is probably the most demanding to understand and apply. What sets this book apart is the author’s application of his considerable experience to this subject area in order to simplify it for those new to teaching and/or new to the subject. Whether you are delivering training or lectures to 16-18 year-olds, mature learners, professionals, managers or international students, with a range of learning needs and barriers to learning, this book will prove useful in preparing you not only for your unit assessment, but also for work in the sector. Most importantly, the book adopts a practical approach, which is supported by evidence and, where relevant, cross-referenced to Ofsted and QAA expectations. It is therefore suitable for those intending to enter teaching and training as well as those already involved in delivering or managing a programme. This textbook is mapped directly to each of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the unit across all awarding organisations. It provides detailed practical explanation and links to various other resources so that whether you are new to teaching or already in a teaching or related role, there will be a detailed examination of inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training. The key benefits to the reader of this textbook are as follows: It is written by an experienced practitioner with extensive experience across the further education and skills sector, occupying a variety of roles; It adopts a practical approach to topics, reflecting current practice in the sector; It includes detailed guidance on structuring effective responses to assessment tasks; It is clearly written and easy to understand; It fully addresses each of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria in a systematic way, which makes completing the unit and assessments in a short timeframe achievable; It provides a broader range of information and examples, which should prove useful when preparing to enter the sector, such as attending job interviews for teaching related posts. THIS TEXTBOOK WILL HELP YOU TO PASS YOUR MICRO-TEACH FIRST TIME AND TO PREPARE YOUR MICRO-TEACH FOR TEACHING-RELATED JOB INTERVIEWS. Micro-teaching is an essential element of the Award in Education and Training (AET), forming part of the unit entitled: Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training. The topic is often covered as a short chapter in most textbooks and stops short of providing a step-by-step practical guide or providing useful guidance for preparing for teaching-related interviews, where a micro-teach session is virtually guaranteed as part of the interview and selection process. An effective micro-teach is well researched, takes account of the audience’s prior learning, knowledge and experience wherever possible, is meticulously planned, effectively practiced and delivered with confidence. It is then thoroughly evaluated and improvements and enhancements are carefully planned and executed before a future micro-teach or a lesson is delivered. This can be viewed as a form of continuous quality improvement. This textbook is aligned to recent changes in the further education and skills sector and shows you how to use such changes to inform your micro-teach research, planning and delivery and in this respect be on par with if not ahead of other candidates at interview. This textbook can be used by itself or as a complementary publication to the following textbooks by the same author: Achieving your Award in Education and Training: The Comprehensive Course Companion Or Achieving your Award in Education and Training: The Comprehensive Course Companion (Special Edition) The principal benefits of this textbook to the reader are as follows: It is written by an experienced practitioner with extensive experience of educational management, delivery, consultancy, quality assurance and of recruiting, appointing and mentoring lecturers in the public and private sectors; It adopts a very practical and systematic approach to the topic, reflecting current practice in the sector; It is clearly written and easy to understand, with lots of examples; It fully addresses each of the related unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria in a systematic way; It places the micro-teach in the context of all three units of the AET course and shows the inter-connections between certain assessment criteria, which will provide you with a more holistic view of the course; It is written for those undertaking a micro-teach as part of their course and for those preparing for a lecturing, teaching or training post; It shows you how to take account of relevant parts of the documents listed below when researching, planning and delivering your micro-teach: Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training – England Special educational needs and disability (SEND) code of practice 0 to 25 years Ofsted Common Inspection Framework and related inspectors’ handbook (for inspections from September 2015) Full lesson planning is also considered in the textbook, with the micro-teach session embedded in the full lesson plan for the purposes of completeness. This should prove to be particularly useful for teaching related job interviews This textbook is streamlined, thereby allowing you to make more efficient use of your time to learn, practice and develop your micro-teaching skills.

This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication originally formed part of a Master’s degree dissertation completed in 2011 by Nabeel. Research was undertaken over a period of two years at a Further Education college and a small private college where Nabeel delivered a level 7 post-graduate management programme accredited by a leading UK awarding organisation. A range of curriculum-level strategies were deployed by Nabeel and his colleagues in order to embed equality and diversity and reduce barriers to learning for international students undertaking the programme. These had a positive pedagogical and performance-related impact. The findings will be of particular interest to teachers and managers responsible for undergraduate, post-graduate and professional programmes being delivered to international students or to learners whose first language is not English, as well as those considering curriculum-level and progression strategies for business and management programmes at level three and above. The research may also provide useful insight to managers and teachers of other subject areas which are internally assessed. The findings are correct as at February 2011. Minor updates have been made to the case study, as well as selective editing and certain stakeholders have been anonymised for ethical reasons. Although the national landscape may have changed since 2011, the strategies applied remain valid and independent of such context. Research questions considered in this dissertation: What constitutes embedding of Equality and Diversity at curriculum level? What are the likely barriers to student learning / achievement on the PGDMS (Level 7 Management) programme? What elements should be prioritised for embedding at curriculum level in order to improve E & D for Blue College PGDMS (Level 7 Management) students? This publication builds on and incorporates the literature review published and entitled: Equality and Diversity: Embedding Equality and Diversity into the Curriculum - a literature review.

As a prospective or new lecturer / trainer / tutor / assessor, how do you ensure: 1. that you are clear about what is expected of you in the role of lecturer, trainer, tutor, or assessor? 2. that you are aware of the key legislation that applies to your existing or proposed role? 3. that you know how to identify and meet individual learners' needs? 4. that equality and diversity and appropriate behaviour are promoted within a safe learning environment? 5. that you understand the limits of your professional responsibilities and when to refer learners to other professionals? This textbook addresses each of these questions, with supporting research and links to additional resources or materials as needed, while remaining tightly focused on the unit's assessment criteria. There are opportunities to consider multiple perspectives, with a range of practical resources that are relevant to teaching, training, assessing, tutoring, quality assurance and educational management. If you are new to teaching then this book is an ideal companion. It provides the information needed to complete the first mandatory unit of the Certificate in Education and Training (CET). It is mapped directly to each of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the unit across all awarding organisations.
