Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Science of Fly Fishing and Spinning In writing this book the author has endeavoured to confine his text entirely to subjects that he thinks will interest every fisherman and be of assistance to those who, owing to lack of opportunity, are neither experienced nor skilful. Even when he has ventured to express his opinion on controversial subjects he hopes that his views will cause offence to none. The average fisherman may not want to know how to build a rod - but he certainly wishes to know how to select one and how to use it. He may not want to make his own flies - but he certainly desires to know what flies to get and when and how to use them. He does not want to make his fishing line - what he wants is to know how to extend it and how to preserve its usefulness. If it desirable and necessary to obtain help in order to become a proficient fly fisherman, the author admits the great advantages of personal tuition when it is obtainable. But, on the other hand he is confident that, by explaining in simple language the science of casting and fishing with he uses when teaching the student personally, he can help the reader to acquire, by careful attention, a success which will well repay him for his trouble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Dry Fly Fishing and Salmon Fly Fishing This consists, in the first place, in the life-history of the salmon, from the time it is deposited as ova by the parent fish in the redd until it attains its full grown state. I have ventured, when dealing with this interesting matter, to introduce some original theories as regards those questions which are still a subject of controversy. In the second place, I have dealt with the different methods of casting, and by plates and diagrams have endeavoured to show the various casts for presenting the lure to the salmon, and explained the methods to be adopted when actually fishing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Dry Fly Fisching While our sporting instincts will be aroused by the difficulties and thrilled by the triumphs Of fly fishing, the artistic and poetic side of our temperament will be as strongly appealed to, and affected, by the surroundings Of the salmon rivers and trout streams on which our fly may be cast. The salmon river will inspire the soul with the strength and force Of its beauty, and invigorate the body with the health-giving scent Of its pine forests and heather; the trout stream will charm our mind, and lull our senses into delicious content, as we listen to the rippling note Of its liquid harmony and inhale the delicate perfume Of its thousand surrounding flowers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fly-Fishing and Fly-Making: For Trout, Etc The formation of the eye of the fish does not materi ally differ, one species from another, among the angler's fishes. The cornea is somewhat flat in sectional outline, and the shape, or, so to speak, the ground plan, is virtu ally similar in save the European graylin g (s. Thymallus). The pupil of the eye of this fish is oval instead of ciren lar - the oval of the plover's egg rather than that of the hen, being sharper than a true oval at one end. The apex of this sharp end is pointed toward the upper part of the head, tailward, giving the fish a somewhat sinister appearance. What purpose this particular configuration serves I do not know, but one thing is certain The vis ual ability of the grayling is equal, if not superior, to that of the trout, as is proved by its rising, often from a great depth, to the fly. I notice, also, that the normal waiting position of this fish is inclined toward the water's surface instead of being horizontal, as is usually the case with trout. This being so, the greater mass of the rays of direct sunlight would fall on the forward part of the eye, and I offer it as a conjecture, based on the law of devel opment, that this, continued through generations, has evolved the peculiar shape. The graylin g of this country, though apparently similar in every other respect, does not exhibit the peculiarity referred to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fly Fishing Numerous pens have been engaged dur ing the last few years on the subject of fly fishing, but the editors feel sure that the volume by Sir Edward Grey, with which the Haddon Hall Library opens, will not be re garded by anglers as superfluous. Gardens and gardening, too, are to be treated of, and will again receive the attention of one who has never yet failed to enrich English literature when he has taken up his pen to write on the well-loved theme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Practical Angler: A Complete Guide to Fly-Fishing, Bottom-Fishing, Trolling I have arrived at conclusions not only differing widely from hitherto received canons, but which, if accepted, will go far to revolutionize, in the direction of simplifying, the whole system both of making and using artificial flies. The question of tackle, also, has for many years occupied much of my attention; and the details of this subject - especially as regards hooks - are entered into with a minuteness which may perhaps seem to re quire apology. The apology is, that the whole art of angling consists really of an aggregation of minutiae, and that upon the difference between, say, a hook of one pattern and a hook of another, often depends, in effect, the difference between a good and a bad day's sport. The present opportunity is taken of submitting to the judgment of anglers a new pattern of hook, con structed on mechanical principles, and the result of some thought and experiment.
