Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money, like sex, has been essential to the rise and development of civilization. The first known writings were records of simple business transactions and later on money came to be used as a common denominator for all goods. Current dealings with money have become infinitely more complicated than at the beginning of recorded history but its basic meaning is the same, a medium underlying all goods and services, in which comparative values are measured and by which they are acquired. Certainly, money is a vital and essential part of our everyday life. It is hard, if not impossible, to conceive of any of us going through a single day's series of experiences without using it or one of its symbolic equivalents: checks, credit cards, letters of credit, IOU's, scrip, food stamps or what have you. Both of us have had a longstanding interest in money, in what it could and could not buy, in investing, spending and allocating. Our personal interest in money antedated our professional training and our career pathways for we were people first before we became people who were therapists.

Download or read book Obsession written by Lennard J. Davis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age of obsession. Not only are we hopelessly devoted to our work, strangely addicted to our favorite television shows, and desperately impassioned about our cars, we admire obsession in others: we demand that lovers be infatuated with one another in films, we respond to the passion of single-minded musicians, we cheer on driven athletes. To be obsessive is to be American; to be obsessive is to be modern. But obsession is not only a phenomenon of modern existence: it is a medical category—both a pathology and a goal. Behind this paradox lies a fascinating history, which Lennard J. Davis tells in Obsession. Beginning with the roots of the disease in demonic possession and its secular successors, Davis traces the evolution of obsessive behavior from a social and religious fact of life into a medical and psychiatric problem. From obsessive aspects of professional specialization to obsessive compulsive disorder and nymphomania, no variety of obsession eludes Davis’s graceful analysis.

Download or read book Coffee with Freud written by Brett Kahr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in Brett Kahr's 'Interviews with Icons' series, following on from Tea with Winnicott. Professor Kahr, himself a highly regarded psychoanalyst, turns his attention to the work of the father of psychoanalysis. The book is lavishly illustrated by Alison Bechdel, winner of the MacArthur Foundation 'Genius' Award.Sigmund Freud pays another visit to Vienna's renowned Cafe Landtmann, where he had often enjoyed reading newspapers and sipping coffee. Freud explains how he came to invent psychoanalysis, speaks bluntly about his feelings of betrayal by Carl Gustav Jung, recounts his flight from the Nazis, and so much more, all the while explaining his theories of symptom formation and psychosexuality.Framed as a 'posthumous interview', the book serves as the perfect introduction to the work of Freud while examining the context in which he lived and worked. Kahr examines his legacy and considers what Freud has to teach us. In a world where manifestations of sexuality and issues of the mind are ever more widely discussed, the work of Sigmund Freud is more relevant than ever.
Book Synopsis The Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud by :
Download or read book The Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud written by and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 8099 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (RSE) is founded on the canonical Standard Edition (SE) translation from the German by James Strachey, while adding a new layer of revisions and translations. Conceptual and lexicographic ambiguities are clarified inextensive new annotations. Drawing on established conventions and intellectual traditions, the Revised Standard Edition supplements Freud’s writing with substantial editorial commentaries addressing controversial technical terms and translation issues through the lens of modern scholarship—a living text in dialogue with itself and the reader. The RSE also includes 56 essays and letters which were not included in the SE. In the RSE text and footnotes a subtle underlining distinguishes, in an easy and accessible way, Mark Solms’s revisions and additions, from the historical translation and commentaries of James Strachey’s Standard Edition. Readers can examine what Strachey contributed before the revisions in tandem with Solms’s updates, new translations, annotations, and commentaries, collectively bringing Freud’s text and Strachey’s translation into dialogue with five decades of research, including the most recent developments in the field. Commissioned by the British Psychoanalytical Society and co-published by Rowman & Littlefield, the Revised Standard Edition brings together decades of scholarly deliberation concerning the translation of Freudian technical terms while retaining the best of Strachey’s original English translation. This landmark work will captivate a wide audience, from interested lay readers to practicing clinicians to scientists and scholars in fields related to psychoanalysis.

Download or read book The Therapeutic Situation in the 21st Century written by Mark Leffert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending the themes of Contemporary Psychoanalytic Foundations, The Therapeutic Situation in the 21st Century is a systematic reformulation of fundamental psychoanalytic concepts, such as transference, therapeutic action, and the uses of psychotropic drugs, in the light of recent developments in postmodernism, complexity theory, and neuroscience. Leffert offers formulations of areas not previously considered in any depth by psychoanalysts, such as power relations in the analytic couple, social matrix theory, and narrative theory informed by considerations of archaeology, genealogy, complexity, memory, and recall. He also considers new areas, such as the role of uncertainty and love in the therapeutic situation. This book is part of an ongoing effort to place psychoanalysis in the current century, and looks to outside as well as inside areas of thought to inform how we work and how we think about our work.
