Book excerpt: Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) instruments have been developed for simultaneous measurement of temperature and species concentrations in turbulent-diffusion, sooty hydrocarbon flames. Contour maps of average temperature, rms temperature, average concentration, and rms concentration have been obtained on a laboratory-scale burner. Simultaneous N2 and O2 measurements by the CARS technique were made with a dual-dye-laser setup. A combination of the laboratory CARS system and a laser-Doppler-velocimetry (LVD) system was completed and tested on a Busen-burner premixed flame. Measurements indicated that simultaneously obtained velocity and temperature data were Favre averaged due to density weighting of the seed particles. Temperature-velocity correlations were obtained and compared to literature values on similar burners obtained with a combined fine-wire thermocouple and LDV. Normal-gradient and counter-gradient transport were observed in the premixed flame. An environmentally hardened CARS system was developed and employed to measure temperatures in the near-wake recirculating-flow region of a bluff-body-stabilized diffusion flame. Time-averaged temperature profiles and probability distribution functions were obtained and interpreted in terms of flow-field characteristics. A comparison of temperature data obtained by means of the CARS technique and using three thermocouples of different design was made. This comparison indicated that the physical design of the thermocouple probe is important and may influence the flow and, thus, the temperature.

An experimental setup for simultaneous measurement of gas species concentration, particle concentration and particle velocity is presented. The final section discusses analysis of diode lasers and optics to perform seedless Laser Heterodyne Velocimetry. The current work also discusses some of the common problems and solutions for laboratory experiments using laser diagnostics.

We have utilized a number of laser multiphoton excitation schemes for their detection using tunable lasers in the 190 to 400 nm range. Similar diagnostic techniques were attempted for the detection of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) atoms in flames. The effects of laser induced photochemical pertubations on species detection in flames were also investigated. These nonlinear spectroscopic techniques have been demonstrated to be very useful in combustion studies but special care needs to be taken with respect to possible perturbations that may result from the use of short-wavelength lasers.

Book excerpt: In-situ optical techniques offer one of the most attractive options for measuring species concentration and spatial distribution profiles in reacting environments, such as flames. The generally non-intrusive nature and spatial resolution of these techniques are now preferred over on extractive sampling, followed by analysis using techniques such as gas chromatography. In this thesis two laser absorption measurement techniques are applied to measure the soot distribution, and acetylene concentration profiles in a flat-flame burner. The in-situ measurement of the distribution of particulate matter in flames is a key step in understanding the mechanism of its formation. Most in-situ measurement systems for this purpose are based on laser induced incandescence where particles are heated using high power laser sources and the increased incandescence emission of the soot particles is detected. However as the soot cools by heat transfer to the surrounding gas, following laser heating, the pressure of the gas is increased creating an acoustic effect. Photoacoustic detection has been applied to quantify low concentrations of particulate matter in ambient air but there have been few applications of photoacoustic detection to the in-situ measurement of particulate matter formation in combustion processes. A novel simple approach using a modulated continuous wave diode laser is presented in this thesis. The measurements taken using this new technique are compared to measurements of the visible emission from the flame, and previous soot distribution measurements using laser induced incandescence. Absorption spectroscopy using near-infrared tunable diode lasers has been applied to measure species in several harsh environments such as aero-engine exhaust plumes, flames, and other industrial processes. Simple single pass absorption techniques are not always suitable for this purpose due to the low absorption of the target species, either due to low concentration or weak absorption line-strength at high temperatures. One method to increase the sensitivity of such techniques is by using cavity enhanced methods which increase the effective path length of the laser through the absorbing medium. One such cavity enhanced method is Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS). CRDS uses a cavity constructed of highly reflecting mirrors, laser light is then coupled into this cavity and absorption measurements can be evaluated from the decay rate of light from the cavity. The design and, novel application of continuous wave CRDS to measure the concentration profile of acetylene in the flat-flame burner is presented. Difficulties in deriving an absolute acetylene concentration from the measured ringdown times were encountered due to the large number of interfering features. Serveral fitting and extraction techniques are applied and compared to attempt to overcome these difficulties.

Imaging is a big part of this field and the versatility it offers makes it a great tool in the hands of researchers and in practical applications. In this thesis, multiple applications of imaging are presented, together with possible data processing routines that are used to obtain qualitative and quantitative information. Intuitive ways of presenting big datasets along with trends and variations in them are shown, for both, time-resolved and single-shot measurements. Efforts to enhance the efficiency of internal combustion engines are discussed and a study on the interaction of spray jets and prevailing combustion in light-duty diesel engines is shown. A thorough optical investigation of methanol combustion in compression ignition engines is presented, along with a characterisation of the injection process and fuel distribution for methanol inside a heavy-duty optical engine. The potential of methanol as a renewable fuel and energy carrier is discussed in a wider perspective, together with demonstrating the benefits of such a propulsion system. In addition, a study of exhaled respiratory particles is presented, in an attempt to characterise the potential for transmission of diseases through the respiratory tract. This consisted of an evaluation of everyday tasks such as talking and singing, which is not commonly found in the literature as most studies are focused on sneezing and coughing. Finally, a novel approach on Background Oriented Schlieren, known as Laser Speckle-based BOS, is presented together with some preliminary results. There is great potential for this technique to be used in combustion engine diagnostics, as it requires minimal optical access to create the pattern and the sensitivity of the setup relies less on the distance of the subject to the background pattern.

Many of the important advances in the field can be attributed to the discussions and ideas emanating from this meeting. This conference, originating in 1981 and held biennially, focuses on laser-based methods for measurement of both macroscopic parameters and the underlying microscale physical and chemical processes. Applications are discussed primarily to elucidate new chemical and physical issues and/or interferences that need to be addressed to improve the accuracy and precision of the various diagnostic approaches or to challenge the community of diagnosticians to invent new measurement techniques. Combustion environments present special challenges to the optical diagnostics community as they address measurements relevant to turbulence, spray and mixture formation, or turbulence/chemistry interactions important in practical combustion systems as well as fundamental chemical reactions in stationary laminar flames. The diagnostics considered may be generally classed as being incoherent, where the signals are radiated isotropically, or coherent, where the signals are generated in a directed, beam-like fashion. Both of the foregoing may employ either electronic or Raman resonance enhancement or a combination of both. Prominent incoherent approaches include laser induced fluorescence (LIF), spontaneous Raman scattering, Rayleigh scattering, laser induced incandescence, molecular flow tagging, and Mie scattering and their two- and three-dimensional imaging variants. Coherent approaches include coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM), polarization spectroscopy (PS), laser induced grating spectroscopy (LIGS) and laser-based absorption spectroscopy. Spectroscopic modelling and validation are key elements to extract accurate parameter measurements and discussions focusing on key energy transfer processes, collisional models, and lineshapes. The properties and behaviour of lasers, optical arrangements and techniques, spectrally-selective and dispersive instruments and detectors are also important determinants of successful measurements and are discussed in detail. Recent developments in the conference have highlighted the application of techniques developed for combustion research that find application in other areas such as biological, atmospheric, chemical engineering or plasma processes.

Book excerpt: The development of diagnostics based on laser-absorption spectroscopy for combustion applications has been an important and active field of research over the past two decades due to the advantages of this non-intrusive optical sensing technique compared to traditional sampling-based sensing methods. Tunable diode laser (TDL) sensors, in particular, have shown the ability to provide in situ, time-resolved, line-of-sight measurements of temperature, gas species concentration, velocity, density, mass flux, and pressure in a variety of combustion environments. This thesis explores three new areas of TDL research: (a) extended near-infrared (NIR) diagnostics, (b) sensing under high-pressures, and (c) applications to chemical kinetics. Water vapor (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are attractive sensing targets for hydrocarbon-fueled systems as they are primary combustion products and their concentrations can be interpretrated to indicate combustion progress and efficiency. Both these gases have absorption spectra in the infrared (IR) region. Most previous TDL absorption sensors were designed to exploit robust telecommunications diode lasers and optical fiber technology in the 1.3-1.6 [mu]m (NIR) wavelength region. Recent developments in semiconductor diode-laser technology have extended the range of continuous wave (CW) room-temperature single-mode diode lasers to 2.9 [mu]m, allowing access to stronger vibrational bands of H2O and CO2 in the extended-NIR region. The first combustion diagnostics in the extended-NIR wavelength were demonstrated as part of this thesis work. The sensors were designed by selecting optimal transitions and then measuring the pertinent spectroscopic parameters in controlled laboratory environements. These sensors were then tested in the combustion environments of a flat flame and shock tube to validate their performance. These new sensors provide enhanced sensitivity and improved accuracy compared to previous TDL diagnostics. The techniques studied were based on laser spectroscopy, with emphasis on spectrally-resolved absorption and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). Laser sources included tunable cw near-infrared diode lasers and tunable (or fixed-wavelength) pulsed lasers operated at ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) wavelengths. The cw lasers were spectrally narrow, allowing study of innovative diagnostics based on spectral lineshapes, while the pulsed lasers provided intense bursts of photons needed for techniques based on LIF. Accomplishments of note included: (1) development of a new imaging diagnostic based on infrared planar laser-induced fluorescence (IR PLIF), (2) investigations of quantitative ultraviolet (UV) PLIF of NO and CO2 in high-pressure combustion environments, (3) the development of a new temperature diagnostic using UV absorption of CO2 for high-temperature combustion environments, (4) development of advanced wavelength-multiplexed diode laser absorption sensing of non-uniform temperature distributions, gas temperature in scramjet flows, and tunable mid-IR-based fuel sensing, and (5) further development of quantitative tracers to image fuel distribution using ketones and the aromatic toluene. The full spectrum of results was published in thirty-eight papers in the AIAA and peer reviewed literature, seven PhD theses, and forty-three presentations and invited lectures.
