Book excerpt: Monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and dogs (beagle) were given thirteen 100-rad gamma-ray doses at 28-day intervals. The comparative response (inury and recovery) of the hematopoietic system of the two species was observed at 7-day intervals during the exposure regime. At 84 days after the thirteenth gamma-ray dose, the 1300-rad conditioned and control dogs and monkeys were challenged continuously with gamma rays at 35 r/day until death to determine the amount of radiation-induced injry remaining in conditioned animals as a reduction in mean survival time. Dogs (50%) and monkeys (8%) died from injury incurred during conditioning exposures. Thus, the comparative response (in terms of lethality) of dogs and monkeys to dose protraction by acute dose fractionation was similar to what we would expect from a single acute dose. The mean survival times for nonconditioned dogs and monkeys during continuous exposure at 35 R/day were the same (approx. 1400 h). Thus, the hematopoietic response of the two species by this method of dose protraction was not significantly different. Mean survival times of conditioned dogs and monkeys during the continuous 35-R/day gamma-ray challenge exposure were greater (significant in dogs but not in monkeys) than for their control counterparts. Thus, long-term radiation-induced injury was not measurable by this method. Conditioning doses of more than 4 times the acute LD503° in dogs and approximately 2 times that in monkeys served only to increase both mean survival time and variance in a gamma-ray stress environment with a dose rate of 35 Rat/day.

Book Synopsis Comparative Lethality Responses of Neutron- and X-irradiated Dogs by : E. J. Ainsworth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LD50 comparisons between the X- and n/gamma-irradiated animals show that, in terms of midline tissue dose, n/gamma radiation is more potent for the production of acute radiation death than is X-radiation. The n/gamma relative potency for bilateral exposure is 1.38 and for unilateral exposure is 1.49. However in terms of exposure (air dose), the n/gamma relative potency is ~ 1.0. At supralethal radiation dose levels, the mean survival time of n/gamma-irradiated animals is less than half that of X-irradiated animals. The possible role of n/gamma-induced intestinal injury is discussed.

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.
Book Synopsis Performance of Rhesus Monkeys During Continuous Low-livel Gamma Radiation by : Robert G. Braun
Download or read book Performance of Rhesus Monkeys During Continuous Low-livel Gamma Radiation written by Robert G. Braun and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six rhesus monkeys, two males and four females weighing 4.8 to 5.3 kg. were trained to perform four operant tasks (Continuous Avoidance, Response Time Following an Auditory Cue, Response Time Following a Visual Cue and a Fixed Ratio Task). Baseline performance was obtained in the laboratory during a 30-day simulated exposure situation. The exposure phase involved a 10-day pre-exposure baseline, 10 days of continuous exposure to 2r per hour gamma radiation, and a 10-day post-exposure follow-up assessment of performance. A 30-day follow-up was also conducted 60 days following the exposure phase. No performance diminutions were discovered on the aversively motivated tasks, but a performance diminution in the food rewarded fixed ratio task occurred during the radiation exposure. All the animals recovered shortly after the exposure and still appeared normal 8 months later. (Author).
