Community singing events are described with helpful advice on setting up and managing these. It presents a useful model of the range of skills necessary for aspiring community choir leaders. This is linked with the formation of a community that contains spiritual elements; this is theorized in relation to the role of the parish church in communal singing. It also discusses the two aesthetics of choral singing and the relationship between oral and literate traditions. The book arises from the engagement of the University of Winchester in partnership with the local community, which is theorized.

Choir members were asked why they joined, and what are the rewards to belonging? Requirements to becoming a member, the musical director's prerequisites, as well as what is needed to initiate and sustain a choir are investigated. The research finds that the practice encourages musical engagement open to all. Therefore the Community Choir is defined as a group of people with no formal musical training or expertise. However, the growth and development of the choir's musical standard is largely reliant on the director's technical competence and personal attributes. Choral repertoire is also reviewed showing that diversity in harmony and rhythm encourages a blended synergy of sound. Competition is a key driver in consumer societies with diminished opportunity to collaborate in meaningful aesthetic expression. Singing in a group can alleviate social isolation, and participation can also promote health and well being benefits. Steeped in these foundations, singing communicates messages that release the singer in transcendental moments, free of temporal anxieties and burdens.
