Book excerpt: Harmon and Post devote the core of their conversation to the relationship between intelligence, cognitive theory, and professional education. How do people learn? What does it mean to teach critical thinking in institutions where hierarchy is entrenched, where a professor with a "couch-and-conversation" teaching style confronts 100+ students in an amphitheater, where students with the most interested and animated faces in class often fail miserably on exams? In a book remarkably devoid of posturing and intellectual bravado, Harmon and Post provide a refreshing, revealing portrait of women in academia and the conflicts, anxieties, skepticism, and realities any thinking educator must confront.
Book Synopsis Fluorine Chemistry at the Millennium by : R.E. Banks
Download or read book Fluorine Chemistry at the Millennium written by R.E. Banks and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-12-04 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions by leading researchers covering a wide scope so characteristic of fluorine chemistry. It is a monograph of historical character comprising personalized accounts of progress and events in areas of particular interest. There is also much to interest and instruct chemists from other disciplines as a good proportion of the chapters contain a considerable amount of 'hard' referenced information relating to modern organic, organoelemental and inorganic chemistry. Historians of chemistry and technology will no doubt be tempted to dip into this book, and surely whoever addresses the task of commemorating Moissan's achievement at the 150-years stage will bless us all in some measure for its existence.
Book Synopsis A Genealogy of Bamboo Diplomacy by : Jittipat Poonkham
Download or read book A Genealogy of Bamboo Diplomacy written by Jittipat Poonkham and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975, M.R. Kurkrit Pramoj met Mao Zedong, marking the eventual establishment of diplomatic relations and a discursive rupture with the previous narrative of Communist powers as an existential threat. This book critically interrogates the birth of bamboo (bending with the wind) diplomacy and the politics of Thai détente with Russia and China in the long 1970s (1968–80). By 1968, Thailand was encountering discursive anxiety amid the prospect of American retrenchment from the Indo-Pacific region. As such, Thailand developed a new discourse of détente to make sense of the rapidly changing world politics and replace the hegemonic discourse of anticommunism. By doing so, it created a political struggle between the old and new discourses. Jittipat Poonkham also argues that bamboo diplomacy – previously seen as a classic and continual ‘tradition’ of Thai-style diplomacy – had its origins in Thai détente and has become the metanarrative of Thai diplomacy since then. Based on a genealogical approach and multi‑archival research, this book examines three key episodes of Thai détente: Thanat Khoman (1968–71), M.R. Kukrit Pramoj (1975–76), and General Kriangsak Chomanan (1977–80). This transformation was represented in numerous diplomatic/discursive practices, such as ping‑pong diplomacy, petro‑diplomacy, trade and cultural diplomacy, and normal visits.

Download or read book Criminal E-discovery written by Federal Judicial Federal Judicial Center and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of digital technology and its spread into every facet of life are producing increasingly complex discovery issues in federal criminal cases. There are several advantages to electronically stored information (ESI, or e-discovery), including speed, efficiency, and quality of information. To ensure these benefits are realized, judges and lawyers working on federal criminal cases need guidance on how best to address e-discovery issues. Judges can play a vital oversight role to ensure that e-discovery moves smoothly, trial deadlines are met, and the parties and courts are able to review and identify critical evidence. This pocket guide was developed to help judges manage complex e-discovery in criminal cases. A note of appreciation goes to Judge Xavier Rodriguez (W.D. Tex.), and Magistrate Judges Laurel Beeler (N.D. Cal.) and Jonathan W. Feldman (W.D.N.Y.), for their suggestions and advice, as well as to our fellow members of the Joint Electronic Technology Working Group, who improved this publication.
Book Synopsis Crossing the Quality Chasm by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Crossing the Quality Chasm written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-08-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second in a series of publications from the Institute of Medicine's Quality of Health Care in America project Today's health care providers have more research findings and more technology available to them than ever before. Yet recent reports have raised serious doubts about the quality of health care in America. Crossing the Quality Chasm makes an urgent call for fundamental change to close the quality gap. This book recommends a sweeping redesign of the American health care system and provides overarching principles for specific direction for policymakers, health care leaders, clinicians, regulators, purchasers, and others. In this comprehensive volume the committee offers: A set of performance expectations for the 21st century health care system. A set of 10 new rules to guide patient-clinician relationships. A suggested organizing framework to better align the incentives inherent in payment and accountability with improvements in quality. Key steps to promote evidence-based practice and strengthen clinical information systems. Analyzing health care organizations as complex systems, Crossing the Quality Chasm also documents the causes of the quality gap, identifies current practices that impede quality care, and explores how systems approaches can be used to implement change.
