Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mollusca, Volume 8: Neurobiology and Behavior, Part 2, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in molluscan neurobiology and behavior. It is part of a multivolume treatise that covers the areas of structure and function, metabolic biochemistry, molecular biomechanics, environmental biochemistry, physiology, ecology, reproduction and development, neurobiology and behavior, and evolution. The Mollusca is intended to serve a range of disciplines—zoology, biochemistry, physiology, and paleontology. It will prove useful to researchers and to all others with interests in mollusks. The book contains four chapters and begins with a discussion of neural control of cephalopod behavior. Subsequent chapters deal with the neuroanatomy of selected gastropod species; molluscan membranes, gates, and channels; and molluscan transmitters and modulators.

Book excerpt: Alphaherpesviruses are a fascinating group of DNA viruses that includes important human pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV): the causative agents of cold sores, genital ulcerous disease, and chickenpox/shingles, respectively. A key attribute of these viruses is their ability to establish lifelong latent infection in the peripheral nervous system of the host. Such persistence requires subversion of the host's immune system and intrinsic antiviral defense mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms of the immune evasion and what triggers viral reactivation is a major challenge for today's researchers. This has prompted enormous research efforts into understanding the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses. This up-to-date and comprehensive volume aims to distill the most important research in this area providing a timely overview of the field. Topics covered include: transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, translational control, virus entry and capsid assembly, the role of microRNAs in infection and oncolytic vectors for cancer therapy. In addition there is coverage of virus-host interactions, including apoptosis, subversion of host protein quality control and DNA damage response pathways, autophagy, establishment and reactivation from latency, interferon responses, immunity and vaccine development. Essential reading for everyone working with alphaherpesviruses and of interest to all virologists working on latent infections.

Book excerpt: Cephalopods (octopus, squid, cuttlefish) are among the most intelligent invertebrates, with highly developed nervous systems which provide excellent model systems for investigating basic questions in neuroscience. Within the last five years, many of the powerful techniques of molecular biology and electrophysiology have been applied to cephalopods, with exciting results. In 32 chapters, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the functioning of the cephalopod nervous system, from the cellular level to their complex sensory systems, locomotion, learning, and social behavior. It will be of interest to both vertebrate and invertebrate neurobiologists, and by anyone interested in the basic principles that control neural function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of undergraduate texts in invertebrate zoology (of which there are many) fall into one of two categories. They either offer a systematic treatment of groups of animals phylum by phylum, or adopt a functional approach to the various anatomical and physiological systems of the better known species. The Invertebrates is the first and only textbook to integrate both approaches and thus meet the modern teaching needs of the subject. This is the only invertebrate textbook to integrate systematics and functional approaches. The molecular systematics sections have been completely updated for the new edition. Strong evolutionary theme which reflects the importance of molecular techniques throughout. Distills the essential characteristics of each invertebrate group and lists diagnostic features to allow comparisons between phyla. New phyla have been added for the new edition. Stresses comparisons in physiology, reproduction and development. Improved layout and illustration quality. Second edition has sold 14000 copies. Nature of the first edition: 'Students will like this book. It deserves to succeed.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was published in 1971, there were several thousand papers dealing with the structure and functions of the heart and blood vessels of fishes. This monograph integrates this information into a much more coherent account of the circulatory function in fish. The structure and function of the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries are discussed and special attention is devoted to the retial capillary exchange systems. The properties of the blood of fish which fit it carry the respiratory gases in the aquatic milieu and the biochemical regulation of the capacity of haemoglobin to bond oxygen, are described. The author examines the role of the nervous system in regulating the activity of the heart and peripheral vessels and evaluates the part this plays in the response of the fish to exercise and to oxygen deficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started insect cell culture work in 1962, when T. D. C. Grace reported the first establishment of invertebrate continuous cell lines. He obtained grow ing cells from pupal ovaries of the emperor gum moth, Antheraea euca lypti. At that time, I was trying to obtain growing cells from leafhoppers. Grace's method could not be applied directly to my culture because of the differences in species, the size of the insects, and the tissue to be cul tured. The vertebrate tissue culture methods gave me some ideas for pre paring cultures from leafhoppers, but those could not be used directly either. There were no textbooks and no manuals for invertebrate tissue culture, so I had to develop a method by myself. First, I considered what type and what size of vessels are suitable for insect tissue culture. Also, I had to look for suitable materials to construct the culture vessels. Sec ond, I had to examine various culture media, especially growth-promot ing substances, such as sera. Then I had to improve culture media by trial and error. The procedure to set up a primary culture was also a problem. How could I sterilize materials? How could I remove tissues from a tiny insect? How many tissues should I pool in order to set up one culture? I had to find out the answers. Naturally, it took a lot of time.

Book excerpt: The importance and originality of this book lie in its functional approach to the study of invertebrate anatomy. The authors deal with all the major groups of invertebrates, illustrating the text with realistic drawings based on whole or dissected animals. The book is intended as a text reference for use by undergraduate and graduate students of zoology and biology. The book's approach should also help the ecologist see more clearly how the activities of each kind of animal contribute to the system he is studying, and the physiologist relate the particular function in which he is interested to all those which the animal performs. Palaeontologists too may find the book of value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of the major reproductive and developmental strategies in the animal kingdom Understanding where and how invertebrates live, reproduce, and develop continues to be a growing fascination to those in scientific, economic, environmental, and health-related fields. The Second Edition of Atlas of Invertebrate Reproduction and Development fills the need for an updated reference that outlines essential information concerning all of the generally recognized phyla. It provides readers with an overview of the major reproductive and developmental strategies employed throughout the animal kingdom. This new edition presents a broad range of coverage in textual descriptions of reproduction and development in animal phyla, including a series of labeled micrographs that demonstrate the details of reproductive systems as well as the embryonic, larval, and juvenile stages for representatives of each phylum. In addition, the Second Edition provides vital updates, including: * Fourteen additional phyla, including all generally recognized phyla * Discussion of newly discovered animal phylum?Cycliophora * Additional coverage of chordate development, including embryogeny of tunicates * Expanded coverage of several phyla based on recent research Atlas of Invertebrate Reproduction and Development, Second Edition covers the reproductive and developmental biology of invertebrates in a manner that is straightforward and comprehensible. Researchers and instructors in the fields of morphology, developmental biology, and invertebrate biology will all be reminded of how the study of invertebrates has led the way in attempting to understand the mechanisms by which life is defined and propagated.
