Book excerpt: This study examined whether or not student, parent, and peer engagement factors that contribute to at-risk students' success in graduating from high school continue to be important in making the transition from high school to postsecondary education. The data set used was the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, which included 1994 data obtained two years after students' scheduled high school graduation. At-risk students exhibited two or more of six risk factors, including "family in the lowest socioeconomic quartile" or "held back a grade". Analysis used alternative statistical methodology, specifically regression analysis and the "odds ratios" produced by this procedure. Key findings indicated that: (1) students whose parents frequently discussed school-related matters and/or had high educational expectations were much more likely than other students to enroll in postsecondary education; (2) students who reported that most or all of their high school friends planned to attend college were far more likely to attend themselves; (3) participating in college preparation activities such as gathering information about financial aid increased the odds of enrolling in postsecondary education; and (4) moderate- to high-risk students participating in college outreach programs were more likely to attend college. Analyses of variance revealed that student success and persistence rates varied between different levels of several of the variables. Book excerpt: Practical solutions for improving higher education opportunities for disadvantaged students Too many disadvantaged college students in America do not complete their coursework or receive any college credential, while others earn degrees or certificates with little labor market value. Large numbers of these students also struggle to pay for college, and some incur debts that they have difficulty repaying. The authors provide a new review of the causes of these problems and offer promising policy solutions. The circumstances affecting disadvantaged students stem both from issues on the individual side, such as weak academic preparation and financial pressures, and from institutional failures. Low-income students disproportionately attend schools that are underfunded and have weak performance incentives, contributing to unsatisfactory outcomes for many students. Some solutions, including better financial aid or academic supports, target individual students. Other solutions, such as stronger linkages between coursework and the labor market and more structured paths through the curriculum, are aimed at institutional reforms. All students, and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, also need better and varied pathways both to college and directly to the job market, beginning in high school. We can improve college outcomes, but must also acknowledge that we must make hard choices and face difficult tradeoffs in the process. While no single policy is guaranteed to greatly improve college and career outcomes, implementing a number of evidence-based policies and programs together has the potential to improve these outcomes substantially.

Book excerpt: With the changing demographics of our college campuses, institutional success is contingent on the success of historically underserved students now more than ever. The purpose of the current study is to identify predictors and risk factors of college success for Latino and first generation college students, and examine the role that high impact practices (HIP) play on academic achievement and retention. The study will comprise two parts, the first is a survey and the second is a mixed method pilot study testing the effectiveness of an HIP-based intervention. In the first study 379 participants completed a questionnaire that assessed experience of academic and social burden, academic self-efficacy, college persistence, perceived availability of social support, and engagement in HIPs. In the second study, 33 participants were placed into three study conditions (control, HIP, and HIP with financial literacy training) to participate in a 10-week mentorship intervention promoting the use if HIPs. Results revealed that academic and social burden significantly predicts lower college persistence and academic self-efficacy. Furthermore, analyses found that social support mediates between burden and college persistence, and bolsters academic self-efficacy. Additionally, the evidence suggests that HIPs may play a protective role on GPA and college persistence. Notably, these relationships were stronger for Latino and first generation college students. The current study has yielded some insights into historically underrepresented students' experiences and needs in college and how HIPs can be leveraged to promote student success.

Research questions focused on demographic information such as race, gender and age. Participant Grade Point Average (GPA) and the number of credit hours enrolled, before and after the program, were also analyzed to determine student persistence. Behaviors included the development of an education plan, life goals, financial plan, and identification of strengths and talents. Factors associated with identifying at-risk students in a community college student success program were found to include GPA, race and student persistence.
