Book excerpt: “A raw and resonant debut novel” (Megan McCafferty) and a vivid portrait of life on a modern college campus. College senior Natalie Bloom is beautiful and ambitious, but also painfully insecure. At twenty, she’s still a virgin, never even having had a boyfriend. At school, Natalie hides out most weekends in the library—until she meets Patrick, her fantasy (she thinks) of a cultured, intellectual Prince Charming. But the more time they spend together, the more Patrick brings out her worst insecurities. And before Natalie’s ready, she winds up losing her virginity— and her sense of direction, as her emotional responses take a dangerously self-destructive turn. Soon it’ll take only the most extreme measures to reclaim her sense of self, her confidence, and her ambition. Insightful, moving, and achingly self-aware, College Girl is an intensely real portrait of a character whose insecurities are recognizable to us all, and of a time of life that changes everything.

Book excerpt: Edward Clarke warned in his widely read Sex in Education (1873), "but she could not do all this and retain uninjured health, and a future secure from neuralgia, uterine disease, hysteria, and other derangements of the nervous system." For half a century, ideas such as Dr. Clarke's framed the debate over a woman's place in higher education almost exclusively in terms of her body and her health.".

And we recognize how right she is today. Yet the voters who boosted Trump all the way to the White House have been a permanent part of our American fabric, argues Isenberg. The wretched and landless poor have existed from the time of the earliest British colonial settlement to today's hillbillies. They were alternately known as “waste people,” “offals,” “rubbish,” “lazy lubbers,” and “crackers.” By the 1850s, the downtrodden included so-called “clay eaters” and “sandhillers,” known for prematurely aged children distinguished by their yellowish skin, ragged clothing, and listless minds. Surveying political rhetoric and policy, popular literature and scientific theories over four hundred years, Isenberg upends assumptions about America’s supposedly class-free society––where liberty and hard work were meant to ensure real social mobility. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early nineteenth century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics–-a widely popular movement embraced by Theodore Roosevelt that targeted poor whites for sterilization. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ’s Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty. Marginalized as a class, white trash have always been at or near the center of major political debates over the character of the American identity. We acknowledge racial injustice as an ugly stain on our nation’s history. With Isenberg’s landmark book, we will have to face the truth about the enduring, malevolent nature of class as well.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The College Girl of America: And the Institutions Which Make Her What She Is The college girl is to-day a force second to none in American life. She it is who will mould the minds, modify the manners, and help raise the moral tone of the men and women of the future. And she will do this not merely through her schoolteacher function, - though there, of course, her influence must be tremendous, - not chiefly through the relation of wife and mother, though that, too, is of vast importance, but principally and above all, I believe, through her every-day intercourse with those about her, as the friend of her chosen intimates, the companion of her chance associates, and the comrade of her fellow workers. The kind of influence any college girl exerts is, of course, determined in great measure by the kind of woman that she is. And the kind of woman that she is depends very largely, in these days, upon the social and intellectual atmosphere of the college from which she has been graduated. Book excerpt: From her first appearance in the mid-nineteenth century, when the age-old conflict over educating women was finally laid to rest, the college girl has attracted criticism, advice, and regulation from her elders--not to mention some enduring images in popular culture. Is she a geek in glasses? Or a sex kitten in a teddy? This book brings together women's history and popular culture in a readable blend of information, insight and humor, peppered with photographs and other femoribilia from the turn of the twentieth century through the 1970s.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of critical essays that center women’s friendship in women’s literary and artistic production. Analyzing cultural portrayals of women’s friendships in fiction, letters, and film, these essays collectively suggest new models of literary interpretation that do not prioritize heterosexual romance. Instead, this book represents friendships as mature and meaningful relationships that contribute to identity formation and political coalition. Both the supportive and competitive aspects of friendships are shown to be crucial to women’s identities as individuals, political citizens, and artists. Addressing the complexities of how 20th- and 21st-century cultural texts construe women’s friendships as they navigate patriarchal institutions, this collection advances scholarship on friendship beyond men and masculine models.
