As such it deserves a permanent record, which it has not hitherto had. It deserves it all the more, because it belongs to the earliest period of that history, and if unwritten would be forgotten. Inasmuch as I was Secretary of the Board of Trustees from the beginning, and the executive officer of the College for eight years, the duty of writing this history seemed to fall to me. Perhaps I am the only one who could write it with so full a recollection of the facts. Besides, . I have carefully preserved the materials necessary to its composition, such as the record of the transactions of the Board of Trustees, the Treasurers books, the correspondence of the College, its annual catalogues and occasional circulars, the reports of the Faculty of Instruction, also copies of printed addresses, orations, poems. IS there anything in the subject-matter, or method, or general discipline, introduced by the new education, which excludes the historic college from a share in it, or remands it to an inferior place? The answer to this ques tion changes somewhat our point of view. Thus far we have been concerned more with the contrast between the college and the university. We Shall now be concerned more with the contrast between the college and the school of technology. Yet for the moment we remain in the former field. By long tradition there are certain subjects requiring continued and specialized treat ment which have been put quite without and beyond the college curriculum. These subjects have been chie y con nected with the great professions. It is now to be noted that there is a tendency to throw back a considerable amount of elementary work from the professional schools into the colleges. Allowance is made both in time and in the larger choice of studies, in the schools of medicine and of theology, and in some cases of law, for those who have taken elementary courses in the colleges. A college student may, if the college so provides, elect his way, up to a certain point, into a professional school. But for the most part the subject-matter of the professional schools must be altogether different from that of the college. Very few, I think, of those among us who faithfully pursued, and so - at least partially - achieved the work have since changed their mind or repented their course. And such continued the prevailing sentiment during the whole periodof my connection with the College. But now, after an absence of a score of years, I return to find the air resounding all over the land with the cry down with the Greek, down with the clas sics, down with the mathematics a cry which, like a north east storm, has come drifting backward from the south and west, and has penetrated even to the heart of New England, until the President of the oldest University in the country is reported to have distinctly formulated the sentence for the entire abolition of the Greek, at least, from the course of studies required in college for the regular degrees. It is true the curriculum of the American college has all along included much besides the classics, or the classics and mathematics, physics, philosophy, logic, rhetoric, sciences, arts, history, literature and in our own college, for many years, the study of' the French and German languages and literature has been wisely added yet the basis and backbone of the whole was understood to be classical culture. Those other things have been gradually crowding upon this, and now, in the spirit of Frederic William, the demand is made that it be abolished altogether. He was fourteen years old but small in stature. At times his face was radiant with boyish joy; at other times his face bore the serious demeanor of a judge. Bobby was one of the very first to reach the playground at recess time. After recess he was among the first to open his books for study. He played with those younger than himself because the younger ones played the more. In the classroom he worked with those older than himself because with these his good mind had more companionship. He was punctual, regular, and reliable in both work and play. But before the close of the year a marked change took place in Bobby. He played less and studied less. Something was wrong with the boy - or with the school. As his teacher, I had come directly from a classical college. I required all my students to take Latin and mathematics. English grammar and history also were emphasized. Hard work and vigorous drill characterized my school policy. I wondered what caused the change in Bobby. One day three of my grade teachers reported to me that Fred, known in the school and in the town as "the worst boy in school," had been asked by Bobby to join his gang. He declined, saying that that gang was too bad for him. My Bobby's gang too bad for Fred? Thus through Fred it was discovered that Bobby was the leader of a gang which had as one of its purposes: How to make swearing easy. These boys held regular and irregular meetings in a little covered bridge near the pastor's house. There they exercised in their self-chosen art. Explanation of the changed attitude of my favorite student was now clear. The usual play at recess had not provided the needed activity.
