Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a volume which opens with reports of information contained in the famous 'Santangel letter' and closes with the announcements of Cortes's conquests in Mexico and Magellan's circumnavigation, historian Geoffrey Symcox presents in chronological order a collection of original texts, accompanied by English translations, detailing the reactions of Italian diplomats, merchants, and the papacy to the news of Columbus's explorations in America and subsequent events down to the conquest of Mexico. These documents form part of the process by which the news of the lands and people of the Americas spread to the courts, chanceries, and educated public of the Italian states and reveal that news of the Americas -- their flora and fauna, their exotic inhabitants, their fabled wealth -- spread swiftly to a public hungry for information. But the collection also suggests that at least until the mid-sixteenth century the achievements of Columbus and his successors remained of secondary concern to statesmen and citizens seeking to survive as their stronger neighbours fought for hegemony in the Italian peninsula and in the Mediterranean.

Book excerpt: Why is the capital of the United States named in part after Christopher Columbus, a Genoese explorer commissioned by Spain who never set foot on what would become the nation's mainland? Why did Spanish American nationalists in 1819 name a new independent republic "Colombia," after Columbus, the first representative of the empire from which they had recently broken free? These are only two of the introductory questions explored in The Legacy of Christopher Columbus in the Americas, a fundamental recasting of Columbus as an eminently powerful tool in imperial constructs. Bartosik-Velez seeks to explain the meaning of Christopher Columbus throughout the so-called New World, first in the British American colonies and the United States, as well as in Spanish America, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She argues that during the pre- and post-revolutionary periods, New World societies commonly imagined themselves as legitimate and powerful independent political entities by comparing themselves to the classical empires of Greece and Rome. Columbus, who had been construed as a figure of empire for centuries, fit perfectly into that framework. By adopting him as a national symbol, New World nationalists appeal to Old World notions of empire.

Book excerpt: On 1 June 1973 Madame Roland was arrested for her involvement in the French Revolution and on 8 November she went to the guillotine. During her 6 month imprisonment she wrote these memoirs. This is the first modern English translation. Approximately half of the pages concern the author's upbringing in a Parisian bourgeois family and her marriage to the bureaucrat Jean-Marie Roland de la Platiere; the remainder discusses the period from 1789 to 1793, when she and her husband were leaders of the Girondin party. Madame Roland was devoted to her spouse and always gave him full credit for work in which she was a full partner, including the inspection of manufacturers under the Old Regime and the post of minister of the interior during parts of 1792 and 1793. Her memoirs provide glimpses into the daily life of the period and sharp portraits of several revolutionary leaders. Scholars will wish to consult the complete French edition, but this book is perfect for general readers.

Book excerpt: Foreword: The Center Of Military History first published Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army: Portraits & biographical sketches in 1981 during the bicentennial of the American Revolution and the US Constitution. The book reflected two major themes of the Army's commemoration: the role of the soldier-statesmen of the revolution in the creation of our government and the constitutional principle of civilian control of the military. This updated printing continues to recognize those twin legacies. The first Secretaries of War were prominent members of the soldier-statesmen generation, and they and their successors have embodied the Founding Fathers' intent to ensure civilian leadership in military affairs. Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army is relevant to students and scholars in such diverse fields as military history, political science, American studies, and art and portraiture. We trust that this new edition will continue to be useful as background for the nomination of Army secretaries, as a handbook for the congressional armed services committees, and as a reference book throughout the Army. It has been a valuable source of information for libraries, and we hope that its distinctive perspective on the history of the Army will interest a new generation of the American public as well.
