Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery in 1987 of a supernova brought to world attention the excellence of Canadian astronomers. As Richard Jarrell explains in this book, the path to excellence has been a long one. Although astronomy has been practised in this country from the earliest days of exploration, its professional status has slowly evolved in much the same way as has the nation itself. In the period of exploration and early settlement, the practical needs of navigators and surveyors were foremost. Astronomical practitioners – for many used astronomy but few were professional or even amateur astronomers – came from elsewhere. Only when Canada was a settled colony, halfway through the nineteenth century, did its own scientific needs emerge. By the century's end Canadian astronomy, socially and institutionally unique and independent, had been established: astronomers born and trained in Canada worked in their own organized and funded institutions. In the twentieth century the story is dominated by the Dominion Observatory, and, in higher education, the University of Toronto. The federal government remained the biggest actor, in employment and funding, first through the observatories, then the National Research Council. The expansion of universities greatly broadened the scope of Canadian astronomy, while the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, local clubs, literature, planetariums, and museums kept the public informed. By the 1960s Canadian astronomy, though small in size, was as sophisticated as any in the world.

But the young Edward III is no longer content with being his regents' puppet, and soon enough Adam is torn between his loyalty to the young king - and that to his former lord, Roger Mortimer, now co-regent and effective ruler of England. Edward III is growing up fast. No longer a boy to be manipulated, he resents the power of his mother, Queen Isabella, and Mortimer. His regents show little inclination of handing over their power to him, the rightful king, and Edward suspects they never will unless he forces their hand. Adam de Guirande is first and foremost Edward's man, and he too is of the opinion that the young king is capable of ruling on his own. But for Adam siding with his king causes heartache, as he still loves Roger Mortimer, the man who shaped him into what he is. Inevitably, Edward and his regents march towards a final confrontation. And there is nothing Adam can do but pray and hope that somehow things will work out. Unfortunately, prayers don't always help. The Cold Light of Dawn is the fourth in Anna Belfrage's series, The King's Greatest Enemy, the story of a man torn apart by his loyalties to his lord and his king

Book excerpt: “Veil of Dawn’s Promise" unfolds in the futuristic city of Cyronis, a towering beacon of human ingenuity and technological prowess, set against a planet scarred by past mistakes. The city, under the vigilant surveillance of an entity known as the Watchers, encapsulates a perfect blend of advanced technology and strict societal control. Amidst this backdrop, the narrative follows Elysa Jane Hawthorne, a pivotal figure within Cyronis's intricate data nexus, who finds herself entangled in a web of clandestine rebellion and hidden truths. The story opens in the vibrant heart of Cyronis, the marketplace, where the rhythms of daily life are suddenly disrupted by a meticulously orchestrated assault. Shadowy figures, members of a terrorist faction known as The Veil of Dawn, execute a series of attacks, leaving the city in disarray and the populace reeling from the unexpected violence. The aftermath exposes the vulnerabilities of Cyronis’s seemingly impenetrable surveillance system and sets the stage for a deeper conflict. Elysa, grappling with fragmented dreams and a sense of a lost past, finds these disturbances unsettlingly close to her personal sphere. As she delves deeper, she discovers connections to her own life and a much larger conspiracy that extends to the very core of Cyronis's governance and its artificial intelligence, Orion. The story navigates through layers of political intrigue, personal discovery, and societal upheaval. Central to the narrative is the complex relationship between technology and humanity, explored through the lens of Elysa’s experiences and her interactions with Orion. The novel adeptly portrays the struggle for identity and freedom within a system designed for absolute control. Elysa’s journey is one of self-discovery, as she uncovers hidden aspects of her past and the true nature of her existence within Cyronis. "Veil of Dawn" masterfully weaves themes of surveillance, autonomy, and the human spirit against a backdrop of a futuristic dystopia. It presents a world where the lines between human emotion and technological advancements blur, creating a compelling narrative that questions the very essence of human freedom and the price of security.

Book excerpt: From author Jon Land and creator Fabrizio Boccardi comes Dark Light: Dawn, a heart-pounding supernatural thriller about a deadly, global epidemic and the man who holds the power to either save the world or destroy it. Since the dawn of time good and evil have challenged the free will of man. Now the time has come for one man to choose for all human kind. With an uncanny ability to survive any combat situation, Max Younger has built a heroic life for himself as a Navy SEAL. That is, until a rogue rescue operation plunges him back into a past he thought he’d escaped forever. Waiting for him back home in New York are terrible, long-hidden truths rooted in the tragic death of his father. But the origin of those truths lie even further back than that, and Max finds himself ensnared in a sinister plot involving nothing less than the biblical apocalypse. The explosive conflagration of events reunites him with the only woman he ever loved: Victoria Tanoury a brilliant infectious disease specialist working for the World Health Organization, who’s on the front lines in a battle to stop the spread of a deadly pestilence threatening the planet. Max’s reunion with Vicky comes amid a combat mission, in which their dual quests merge in a desperate fight for survival against forces of unspeakable evil. Across the globe, inexplicably diabolic events are rising, sparked by a fearsome plan to visit the End of Days upon civilization in horrific form, as the lines between science and superstition become increasingly blurred. Max finds himself mired in a titanic struggle within his own soul, between love and hate, unsure whether his ultimate fate is to help fight the evil. . . or embrace it in the shadow of the Dawn of a Dark Light. Book excerpt: THIRTY YEARS AGO, THE REMAINS OF A YOUNG CHILD WERE FOUND IN A CAVE. HIS NECK WAS BROKEN. The child was never claimed. There were no witnesses. There were no leads. The case went cold. Gil Novak decides to retire and concentrate on improving his health. His severe insomnia is fueled by recurring nightmares filled with monsters, devils, angels, and gunfire! Hypnotherapy steers him toward seeking out what traumatized him as a teenager on a mountain in Massachusetts. Detective Karen Tindall reactivates the cold case because she finally has a lead. Gil saw the child and his family at that cave fifty years ago. Gil is engaged by Karen's police department as a consultant. The case involved a desperate family on the run that became involved in the hippie culture as they sought refuge at a commune. The case heats up as Gil is attacked and nearly killed. Seemingly random murders and arsons keep cropping up. Detective Tindall gets kidnapped. DNA evidence eventually starts to pay off. In addition to the thrilling pursuit of a complex mystery, this book is the compelling story of a family who is critically damaged by horrifying events and to what extent that gets resolved. It also involves Gil coming to terms with the death of his wife, and his bumbling and lighthearted transition to the retirement phase of his life.
