Download or read book Bare written by Mavis Rochelle Prince and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bare represents the gamut of my existence and accomplishments which would not have otherwise come to fruition absent challenges that I faced. Writing is beneficial and helps me to strike a balance between daily activities and my inner self. It provides calm during raging storms which seem to be endless. Among them is sexual abuse and single parenting. Add to this equation caretaker for aging and terminally ill parents twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Having been assaulted, raped, and physically beaten to take away my will in this century was both devastating and alarming. This web of collusion caused me to constantly seek intricate and flexible solutions to combat underemployment and isolation. Lines like fluent fountains continue to flow and finally there are so many verses that I was asked to publish them. My perspective reflects the struggle against an unforgiving systematic sociological structure which needs revision. Resolute to triumph, I conquer ignorance through both the word of God and academic subjects. My prayer for America is that in the present moment, our leadership will be more inclusive of opportunities for women, especially black women. The environmental forces and circumstances surrounding our success is different. Change for the betterment of the nation and revisit the way employers treat and view all older workers.

His father is a prominent Methodist preacher from a successful and influential Creole family -“the Howard’s.” The family motto is, “work, save, educate.” His mother operates a no-name school for children who cannot attend regular school during the day. His paternal grandmother, Grandma Howard, chiefly commands the Howard family business interests. She is extremely color conscious, preferring the lighter hue and Creole heritage. In his pre-teen years, Daniel Howard is often in trouble for being sighted on Bourbon or Basin Streets tap dancing and yearning to play the piano in the blues clubs and juke joints. Through his lens the reader is introduced to his view of New Orleans to include, the lively scenes in the French Quarters; Mardi Gras; Voodoo; Congo Square; and, life in a vibrant port city among many other experiences. His maternal grandmother, “Nana”, heads the maternal side of his family. Nana is a widow and illiterate and resides in a tin roofed former slave cabin outside of New Orleans. She is an extremely religious woman and ekes out a meager living as a maid. She is also the local midwife, and tends to the sick with herb potions. She still grieves that her son, Lester, was dragged from her cabin one dark night and lynched. After graduating from college, he is recruited to teach in a small-impoverished town in the Mississippi Delta where despite his hopes and desire to make a difference, hardships and humiliations await him and his new bride, Miss Emma.

Download or read book All That Matters written by Wayson Choy and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in Vancouver's Chinatown in the 1930s and 1940s, Choy continues the story of the Chen family household, this time narrated by First Son, Kiam-Kim. We first meet Kiam-Kim at the age of eight, staring at the yellowed photograph of his mother, who died in China when he was just a baby. Kiam-Kim, Poh-Poh (his larger-than-life grandmother) and Mr. Chen, his demure and honest father, journey to a new life in Vancouver's Old Chinatown. Following the dream of finding gold and then one day returning to China -- wealthy -- they, like many Chinese families around them, find themselves in a country on the brink of the Second World War, struggling to survive in a foreign land and keep alive the traditions of an older world. Finely crafted, and rich in historical detail, All That Matters depicts 1930s Vancouver in the haunting hues of memory, and sees in the Chen family a fragile miniature of a larger world. Dwelling on Kiam-Kim's sense of responsibility to his community, Choy unfolds the Chen family's secrets in thoughtful and luminous prose, leading the reader to a breathtaking conclusion that far transcends the limits of its time and place, and gestures towards all humanity.

Book Synopsis Grant Invades Tennessee by : Timothy B. Smith
Download or read book Grant Invades Tennessee written by Timothy B. Smith and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When General Ulysses S. Grant targeted Forts Henry and Donelson, he penetrated the Confederacy at one of its most vulnerable points, setting in motion events that would elevate his own status, demoralize the Confederate leadership and citizenry, and, significantly, tear the western Confederacy asunder. More to the point, the two battles of early 1862 opened the Tennessee River campaign that would prove critical to the ultimate Union victory in the Mississippi Valley. In Grant Invades Tennessee, award-winning Civil War historian Timothy B. Smith gives readers a battlefield view of the fight for Forts Henry and Donelson, as well as a critical wide-angle perspective on their broader meaning in the conduct and outcome of the war. The first comprehensive tactical treatment of these decisive battles, this book completes the trilogy of the Tennessee River campaign that Smith began in Shiloh and Corinth 1862, marking a milestone in Civil War history. Whether detailing command-level decisions or using eye-witness anecdotes to describe events on the ground, walking readers through maps or pulling back for an assessment of strategy, this finely written work is equally sure on matters of combat and context. Beginning with Grant's decision to bypass the Confederates' better-defended sites on the Mississippi, Smith takes readers step-by-step through the battles: the employment of a flotilla of riverine war ships along with infantry and land-based artillery in subduing Fort Henry; the lesser effectiveness of this strategy against Donelson's much stronger defense, weaponry, and fighting forces; the surprise counteroffensive by the Confederates and the role of their commanders' incompetence and cowardice in foiling its success. Though casualties at the two forts fell far short of bloodier Civil War battles to come, the importance of these Union victories transcend battlefield statistics. Grant Invades Tennessee allows us, for the first time, to clearly see how and why.
