Book excerpt: Computers and new printing technologies have brought significant changes to the world of self-publishing. Unlike what was the case only a decade ago, it is now possible to release a book without printing a full press run and the Internet provides some marketing opportunities that were not available a few years ago. This means that a book can now be published for a very modest fee, and that warehousing costs are a thing of the past. If you are thinking about self-publishing, then this book will provide you with a quick overview of everything you need to know in order to have your book released. And, it will help you decide whether or not self-publishing is really the best thing for your book. One of the things this book does not attempt to do is tell you that self-publishing is for everyone. Unlike most books on the subject, this one does try to present an accurate portrayal of the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing, something that is critical if you want to avoid a painful disappointment.

Book excerpt: BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A novel that follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he never much thought about—until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance: one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Book excerpt: "Publish Like the Pros: A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing" is a must-read for new authors who want to get it right when self-publishing their books. Self-publishing is a perplexing and ever-shifting landscape; it's easy for authors to get taken in by self-publishing companies that promise the moon but don't deliver. In just 88 pages, "Publish Like the Pros" takes the confusion out of self-publishing and gives authors the six steps to publishing quality professional books that don't scream "I'm self-published!!" The self-publishing author will find everything he or she needs to get started, including cover design, book titles, typesetting, editing, and proofreading, and a special chapter on book distribution, pricing and marketing. Written by a book designer with years of experience working with both first-time authors and seasoned publishers, "Publish Like the Pros" speaks directly to new authors who want to publish a book that they can feel proud of and that sells! Industry leaders praise "Publish Like the Pros" DeFilippo has written a complete overview of the book industry and the publishing process that will allow both authors and self-publishers to make their way through the self-publishing process quickly and successfully. I was amazed at the up-to-date insights and money-saving advice in this book! Want to do it right? Want to avoid a lot of the mistakes that plague first time self-publishers? Read "Publish Like the Pros" and call 1106 Design. -Amy Collins, owner of The Cadence Group and New Shelves Distribution, http: //ww.thecadencegrp.com/distribution Traditional self-publishing has been hijacked (I should know!). Authors who follow the "do-it-yourself" approach recommended by self-serving POD publishers soon discover that plain covers do not attract buyers. In "Publish Like the Pros: A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing," Michele DeFilippo explains how quality books have always been created-with an eye to the future. Armed with this advice, authors can take full advantage of today's unprecedented opportunity to distribute and promote their books without middlemen, and successfully compete in the book publishing industry. -Dan Poynter, author of "The Self-Publishing Manual" As a book shepherd who turns unpublished writers into well-published authors, I'm constantly guiding authors away from cheap junk and toward choices that create a book that looks and sounds as good as or better than anything coming out of the big publishers. DeFilippo's pleas for professionalism will be very helpful in convincing my clients that it's much better to self-publish the right way-if you want to create a book that will sell copies and influence people. -Shel Horowitz, book shepherd and book marketing specialist, http: //shelhorowitz.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1950s Cold War-era monsters meet 21st century terrorists: this exploration of sci-fi movies examines the similarities and differences between the political environment and popular culture of two eras. This examination and appreciation of 1950s science fiction films includes behind-the-scenes tales about their production and many quotes from those who produced and starred in the films. The author draws parallels between the Cold War fears of the 1950s and 60s and the constant "terrorism alerts" of the September 11th era, exploring how the politics and the psychological climate of the times influences and is reflected in this vehicle of popular culture. This book is the first of its kind, studying the pop culture genre in the wake of the September 11th tragedy. It shows that, whatever the era and whatever the challenges and crises confronting America, many entertainment themes remain the same, reflecting their respective times and the relevant issues. For instance, Godzilla, the only Fifties-era monster to remain a "movie star" beyond that era, could be fashioned to reflect whatever issues dominate the times, be they nuclear war in the Fifties when Godzilla originated to a Seventies Godzilla film about environmental pollution. Conceivably a Godzilla for the age of terrorism is possible. "Them"! the 1954 atomic mutation classic, is the spiritual ancestor of the 2002 film "Eight Legged Freaks." The alien invaders of the Fifties signified a Russian invasion of America, while other films of the genre, such as "Invaders from Mars," depicted aliens utilizing mind control to manipulate humans to commit acts of sabotage, signifying Communist enslavement. If such a film were made now, such invaders could be seen as terrorist masterminds using human slaves to commit terrorist acts. Finally, several Fifties films depicted the end of the world at a time when Americans expected a nuclear war with Russia. The immediate pre-September 11th era witnessed films presenting galactic threats to mankind's existence ("Independence Day," "Deep Impact," "Armageddon"), while the early 2000s witnessed the popularity of the "Left Behind" Christian films dramatizing the Tribulation period in the Book of Revelation.
