Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a broad foundation in the history of nineteenth-century French art, Richard Shiff offers an innovative interpretation of Cézanne's painting. He shows how Cézanne's style met the emerging criteria of a "technique of originality" and how it satisfied critics sympathetic to symbolism as well as to impressionism. Expanding his study of the interaction of Cézanne and his critics, Shiff considers the problem of modern art in general. He locates the core of modernism in a dialectic of making (technique) and finding (originality). Ultimately, Shiff provides not only clarifying accounts of impressionism and symbolism but of a modern classicism as well.

Book excerpt: An updated edition of this classic survey illustrated in color throughout, this book is the definitive overview of Paul Cézanne’s life and work. For Picasso he was “like our father”; for Matisse, “a god of painting.” Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) is widely regarded as the father of modern art. In this authoritative and accessible study, Richard Verdi traces the evolution of Cézanne’s landscape, still-life, and figure compositions from the turbulently romantic creations of his youth to the visionary masterpieces of his final years. The painter’s biography—his fluctuating reputation and strained relations with his parents, wife, and close friend Emile Zola—is vividly evoked using excerpts from his own letters and from contemporary accounts of the artist. Cézanne was torn between the desires to both make and find art—to master the themes of the past, through his copying sessions in the Louvre, and to explore the eternal qualities of nature in the countryside of his native Provence. In this way, the artist sought “to make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of the museums.” In this richly illustrated overview, now updated throughout and with a new preface, Verdi explores the strength, vitality, and magnitude of Cézanne’s achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last years of his life Paul Cézanne produced a stunning series of watercolors, many of them sill lifes. Still Life with Blue Pot is one of these late masterpieces that is now in the collection of the Getty Museum. In Cézanne in the Study: Still Life in Watercolors, Carol Armstrong places this great painting within the context of Cezanne’s artistic and psychological development and of the history of the genre of still life in France. Still life—like the medium of watercolor—was traditionally considered to be “low” in the hierarchy of French academic paintings. Cézanne chose to ignore this hierarchy, creating monumental still-life watercolors that contained echoes of grand landscapes and even historical paintings in the manner of Poussin—the “highest” of classical art forms. In so doing he changed his still lifes with new meanings, both in terms of his own notoriously difficult personality and in the way he used the genre to explore the very process of looking at, and creating, art. Carol Armstrong’s study is a fascinating exploration of the brilliant watercolor paintings that brought Cézanne’s career to a complex, and triumphant, conclusion, The book includes new photographic studies of the Getty’s painting that allow the reader to encounter this great watercolor as never before, in all of its richness and detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Cezanne The problem of the observer is to recognize this individuality and to share the values communicated in and through it. He must be able to identify plastic form when he encounters it in a picture, that is, to distinguish between an organic union of insights won by personal experience, and plastic clichés assembled according to a stereotyped formula. He must, in brief, learn to see, and the process is long and arduous, involving as it does constant practice in the sharpening of perceptions of color, of the play of light and shadow, of the sequence and rhythm of line and mass, of the inter relationships between these factors that endow each of them with meaning. It requires a knowledge of the traditions of painting and of the technical means by which the artist works. Competently applied, the process yields results inaccessible to casual or un trained observation, and when guided by scientific method it de velops an objective criterion or standard of judgment of the same order of certitude as the findings of pure science. Our efforts to apply the scientific method to a study of Cé zaune's work has required a detailed examination of his technique and form, as they emerged throughout the course of his develop ment. The investigation began twenty-five years ago, and by 1925 had reached a stage that seemed to warrant publication of a sec tion, entitled The Development of Cézanne's Technique, in the first edition of our book The Art in Painting. 1 This chapter was omitted from subsequent editions because continued study of a steadily increasing number of Cézanne's pictures showed the data upon which it was based to have been inadequate. Our study, as presented herewith, amplifies the earlier investigation by including the significant findings of detailed analyses of practically all of Cézanne's important paintings, from the beginning to the end of his career.
