Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, analysis of class and other basic structures of capitalism was sidelined by theorists who argued that social and economic life is reducible to culture—that our choices reflect interpretations of the world around us rather than the limitations imposed by basic material facts. Today, capitalism is back on the agenda, as gross inequalities in wealth and power have pushed scholars to reopen materialist lines of inquiry. But it would be a mistake to pretend that the cultural turn never happened. Vivek Chibber instead engages cultural theory seriously, proposing a fusion of materialism and the most useful insights of its rival. Chibber shows that it is possible to accommodate the main arguments from the cultural turn within a robust materialist framework: one can agree that the making of meaning plays an important role in social agency, while still recognizing the fundamental power of class structure and class formation. Chibber vindicates classical materialism by demonstrating that it in fact accounts for phenomena cultural theorists thought it was powerless to explain. But he also shows that aspects of class are indeed centrally affected by cultural factors. The Class Matrix does not seek to displace culture from the analysis of modern capitalism. Rather, in prose of exemplary clarity, Chibber gives culture its due alongside what Marx called “the dull compulsion of economic relations.”

Book excerpt: This monograph presents a collection of results, observations, and examples related to dynamical systems described by linear and nonlinear ordinary differential and difference equations. In particular, dynamical systems that are susceptible to analysis by the Liapunov approach are considered. The naive observation that certain "diagonal-type" Liapunov functions are ubiquitous in the literature attracted the attention of the authors and led to some natural questions. Why does this happen so often? What are the spe cial virtues of these functions in this context? Do they occur so frequently merely because they belong to the simplest class of Liapunov functions and are thus more convenient, or are there any more specific reasons? This monograph constitutes the authors' synthesis of the work on this subject that has been jointly developed by them, among others, producing and compiling results, properties, and examples for many years, aiming to answer these questions and also to formalize some of the folklore or "cul ture" that has grown around diagonal stability and diagonal-type Liapunov functions. A natural answer to these questions would be that the use of diagonal type Liapunov functions is frequent because of their simplicity within the class of all possible Liapunov functions. This monograph shows that, although this obvious interpretation is often adequate, there are many in stances in which the Liapunov approach is best taken advantage of using diagonal-type Liapunov functions. In fact, they yield necessary and suffi cient stability conditions for some classes of nonlinear dynamical systems.

His research activities also include other areas (like nonparametrics, statistics and sports, combination of forecasts and magic squares, just to mention afew). Götz Trenkler was born in Dresden in 1943. After his school years in East G- many and West-Berlin, he obtained a Diploma in Mathematics from Free University of Berlin (1970), where he also discovered his interest in Mathematical Statistics. In 1973, he completed his Ph.D. with a thesis titled: On a distance-generating fu- tion of probability measures. He then moved on to the University of Hannover to become Lecturer and to write a habilitation-thesis (submitted 1979) on alternatives to the Ordinary Least Squares estimator in the Linear Regression Model, a topic that would become his predominant ?eld of research in the years to come.

Book excerpt: Many important problems in applied science and engineering, such as the Navier Stokes equations in fluid dynamics, the primitive equations in global climate mod eling, the strain-stress equations in mechanics, the neutron diffusion equations in nuclear engineering, and MRIICT medical simulations, involve complicated sys tems of nonlinear partial differential equations. When discretized, such problems produce extremely large, nonlinear systems of equations, whose numerical solution is prohibitively costly in terms of time and storage. High-performance (parallel) computers and efficient (parallelizable) algorithms are clearly necessary. Three classical approaches to the solution of such systems are: Newton's method, Preconditioned Conjugate Gradients (and related Krylov-space acceleration tech niques), and multigrid methods. The first two approaches require the solution of large sparse linear systems at every iteration, which are themselves often solved by multigrid methods. Developing robust and efficient multigrid algorithms is thus of great importance. The original multigrid algorithm was developed for the Poisson equation in a square, discretized by finite differences on a uniform grid. For this model problem, multigrid exhibits extremely rapid convergence, and actually solves the problem in the minimal possible time. The original algorithm uses rediscretization of the partial differential equation (POE) on each grid in the hierarchy of coarse grids that are used. However, this approach would not work for more complicated problems, such as problems on complicated domains and nonuniform grids, problems with variable coefficients, and non symmetric and indefinite equations. In these cases, matrix-based multi grid methods are in order.
