Born in Beverley, Yorkshire, she was the second daughter of Major Thomas Pardoe who had served in the Peninsula campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars and fought at Waterloo. She began writing at an early age and published her first work, The Nun: A Poetical Romance, anonymously in 1824. Her first novel Lord Morcar of Hereward (1829) was also published anonymously. Like many others in the early 19th century she travelled south to benefit from the warmer climate and thus avoid tuberculosis, and her first travel book, Traits and Traditions of Portugal, was published in 1833. A trip to Turkey with her father inspired her best-known work, The City of the Sultan and Domestic Manners of the Turks, published in two volumes in 1837, in which she presents the Turkish upper-class with sympathy and humanity. Volume II offers the reader an insight into harem life, betrothal and marriage customs, religious practices, and many other aspects of the daily life of a well-to-do Turkish household, together with glimpses into the world of the Imperial Palaces. It also covers Miss Pardoe's return journey via Hungary, about which she later wrote at greater length in The City of Magyar (1840) which includes research into Hungarian economic and political life. Illustrated with engravings, the majority from her own drawings. The book became so popular that it was republished in 1838, 1845, and 1854, and was followed by The Beauties of the Bosphorus in 1838.

Book excerpt: Julia Pardoe (December 4, 1806 - November 26, 1862), was an English poet, novelist, historian and traveller. She was born at Beverley, Yorkshire, and showed an early interest in literature. She became a prolific and versatile writer, producing in addition to her lively and well-written novels many books on travel, and others dealing with historical subjects. She was a keen observer, and her travel to the East gave her an accurate and deep knowledge of the peoples and manners of the East. To modern readers she is probably best known for her books on her travels in Turkey, which are some of the earliest works by a woman on this area. In 1836 she travelled to Constantinople with her father, Major Thomas Pardoe. This voyage inspired her book The City of the Sultan (1836). Later she collaborated with the artist William Henry Bartlett to produce The Beauties of the Bosphorus (1839), an illustrated account of Constantinople.

Book excerpt: Excerpt: "Seagulls were flying past us in clouds, and sporting like domestic birds about the vessel, while many of the adjoining roofs were clustered with them; the wild-duck and the water-hen were diving under our very stern in search of food; and shoals of porpoises were every moment rolling by, turning up their white bellies to the light, and reveling in safety amid the sounds and sights of a mighty city, as though unconscious of the vicinity of danger."
