Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Churchwardens' Accounts of St. Michael's in Bedwardine, Worcester: From 1539 to 1603, Transcribed and Edited for the Worcestershire Historical Society, With an Introduction It has somewhere been said that the man who keeps his accounts upon a good system has no need to keep a regular diary, the various items being quite sufficient to bring to his mind the several incidents of his life. In the same way the accounts of the church wardens of a parish not only reflect in many aspects the history of the parish to which they relate, but also the history of the country, as far as regards at least its ecclesiastical affairs. The accounts of St. Michael's in Bedwardine arc no exception to this rule. St. Michael's in Bedwardine was a small parish lying round the Cathedral of Worcester. In the third year of Elizabeth's reign, 1562.it contained 4S families, and in later days, in 1776, 60 families Greet), however, says that in 1779 possessed 99 houses and 623 inhabitants. It included the Cathedral churchyard, the episcopal palace, now the Deanery, and the charnel-house on the north of the Cathedral; and on the south the castle (the Keeper of the Castle and his wife paid for scats in 1569) and its hill, reaching down as far as the river. The church, at all events, was not within the limits of the city, sharing in this the circumstances of the Cathedral, so close to which it stood. To an inquiry made as to the privileges of the Church of Worcester, and held on January 1, 16 1/2, the Dean and Chapter answered, "The Corporation of the City hath no jurisdiction within the precincts of the Cathedral, for the said Church lies in the County of Worcester and not within the city." That St. Michael's was within the county is asserted at the head of the accounts for many of the years; "being within the County and Diocese of Worcester," the heading usually runs, and in some years the words arc added, "near the City of Worcester." An engraving of the Church is given in Valentine Green's History of Worcester, which shews that it consisted of a nave and a chancel, the former possessing a large west window, while by the south wall of the chaneel stood the clochcrium or bell-tower, which was taken down in 1647 and sold for 617 14s. 2d.
