But it must be remembered that he regarded ordination by himself, conferred on one of his preachers, as equally valid with any that might have been bestowed by the hands of any bishop of whatever Church. What he objected to in some Smith's Hiitory of Methodism, vol. i., pp. 520, 521. As to American Methodism. 71 of his preachers was that they had presumed to administer the sacraments when he had not appointed them. 'Did we ever appoint you, ' he asks in his sermon, 'to administer sacraments, to exercise the priestly office?' 'Where did I appoint you to do this? Nowhere at all ' In the year preceding the date of the letter from which I have just quoted, Wesley had taken the necessary steps for organising an independent Methodist Church for America. His Letter to Dr. Coke, Mr. Asbury, and our Brethren in North America, is dated September 10th, 1784. In it he expounds his views as to Church government in strict agreement with the extract which I have quoted from the Disciplinary Minutes of 1747, making specific reference to Lord Chancellor King's account of the Primitive Church; andhe closes this letter with the following sentence: 'As our American brethren are now totally disentangled both from the State and from the English hierarchy, we dare not entangle them again, either with the one or the other. They are now at full liberty, simply to follow the Scriptures and the Primitive Church; and we judge it best that they should stand fast in that liberty wherewith God has so strangely made them free.' For which reason, among others, Wesley had no desire, in 1784, that 1 the English bishops should ordain part of our preachers for America.' Nevertheless in 1775, writing to a Tory statesman, Wesley described..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Churchmanship of John Wesley: And the Relations of Wesleyan Methodism to the Church of England The volume itself is a new composite out of materials the greater part of which have already been published. The substance of about one-half appeared in the Contemporary Review, in September, 1876, as an article on The Churchmanship of John Wesley.' By the courtesy of Mr, Strahan, I am allowed to use it for the purpose of this volume. Most of the remainder had appeared in a former publication on the Relations of John Wesley and Wesleyan Methodism to the Church of England, ' which was called forth by special circumstances eleven years ago, and of which two editions have been sold, but which will be superseded by the present volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley claimed to be a man of one book, and early Wesley scholarship accepted uncritically that the Bible was his supreme authority. In the late twentieth century, American Wesley scholars discussed what has been termed the Wesley Quadrilateral (the authority of the Bible, tradition, reason, and experience), and this to some extent helps explain the method by which Wesley read and interpreted the Bible. However, modern biblical reader-response criticism has drawn attention to the central role of the reader in his/her interpretation of scriptural texts. Donald Bullen argues that Wesley came to the Bible as a reader with the presuppositions of an eighteenth-century High Church, Arminian Anglican, in which tradition he had grown up. He then found his beliefs confirmed in the scriptural text. Claiming to base all his beliefs on the Bible, he found himself in controversy with others who made similar claims but came to different conclusions. The implications of this are explored in depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley’s Doctrine of Justification provides updated scholarship on this pivotal doctrine of Methodism, providing a deeper understanding of a major tenet of the Christian faith. Mark Olson offers a comprehensive treatment of the development and exposition of Wesley’s doctrine of justification and how it changed throughout Wesley’s life, including his early views rooted in Anglican heritage, the significant developments in Wesley’s career, and contributions from notable figures like John Fletcher to his doctrine of general justification. The doctrine of justification was pivotal to John Wesley’s understanding of a person’s relationship with God. In Wesley’s view, it defined one of the two general parts of salvation. It touched every aspect of the spiritual journey from birth (general justification) to conversion (present justification) to final judgment and glory (final justification). To properly understand Wesley’s via salutis and theology, one needs to grasp the particulars of his doctrine of justification. The best way to do this is to tell the story of how he came to understand the doctrine over the course of his life. It is a complex story, with many twists and turns, that deserves to be fully told.

Book excerpt: "With this volume the publication of A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain comes to its appointed end. The project of writing it was initiated by the Methodist Conference of 1953, and the lapse of time since then has made it possible to include at appropriate points the results of the continuing research into the origins and nature of Methodism; but 'the chance and changes of this mortal life', which are bound to impinge on the progress of so complex an enterprise, together with the heavy involvement of all the contributors in ecclesiastical, ecumenical and academic affairs, have made this period much longer than the General Editors would have wished." -- From the Preface

The mission was a laboratory for implementing his views of primitive Christianity. The ideal of restoring the doctrine, discipline, and practice of the early church in the Georgia wilderness was a prime motivation for Wesley's missionary activity.

Book Synopsis John Wesley by : Kenneth J. Collins

Download or read book John Wesley written by Kenneth J. Collins and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley: A Theological Journey has been nominated for a Wesleyan Theological Society Book Award. Abingdon Press would like to congratulate Kenneth Collins on this honor. John Wesley remains a seminal figure, not only for "the people called Methodist, " but also within the larger Protestant tradition. Understanding his theology is a requirement for understanding the development of the Western Christian tradition in the modern period. In recent years much work has been done to grasp the intricacies of Wesley's theology. However, most of this work has been thematic in organization, studying Wesley's thought according to a topical or systematic outline. The weakness of this approach, argues Kenneth J. Collins, is that it fails to demonstrate the evolution and changes of Wesley's theology. What is called for is a historical presentation--one that examines the development of Wesley's theology across the span of his long and eventful theological career. Collins thus provides a chronological presentation of the development of Wesley's theology. Drawing on an extensive examination of the primary sources, and demonstrating an intimate knowledge of the different contexts and social locations in which Wesley's theology took place, John Wesley: A Theological Journey will be necessary reading for anyone wishing to understand the broad scope of the Methodist leader's theological development and contribution.
