Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Churches and Chapels of Old London: With a Short Account of Those Who Have Ministered in Them The sites of the old churches are very plainly indicated in most instances by little green spots, formerly church-yards, now changed into pleasant gardens and resting places. A very small amount of information can be gleaned as to the architecture, style, or size of these buildings. In most cases, no doubt, they were small and insignificant structures, but sufficiently large for the congregations attending them. That they were more in number than the circum stances required is sufficiently evidenced by the fact that when the City was rebuilt it was determined to erect but half the number that previously existed, although there is not much doubt that then, as now, the inhabitants did not always attend their own parish churches, for we find in the records of the Old Stepney Meeting, at that time situate in the small village of Stebonhethe, that when it was formed in the year 1644-45, it is stated that among the congregation worshipping there we have men of Stepney and others of Walbrook and Birchin Lane attending the church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New essays examining Bohemia as a key European context for understanding Chaucer's poetry. Chaucer never went to Bohemia but Bohemia came to him when, in 1382, King Richard II of England married Anne, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. Charles's splendid court in Prague was renowned across Europe for its patronage of literature, art and architecture, and Anne and her entourage brought with them some of its glamour and allure - their fashions, extravagance and behaviour provoking comment from English chroniclers. For Chaucer, a poet and diplomat affiliated to Richard's court, Anne was more muse than patron, her influence embedded in a range of his works, including the Parliament of Fowls, Troilus and Criseyde, the Legend of Good Women and Canterbury Tales. This volume shows Bohemia to be a key European context, alongside France and Italy, for understanding Chaucer's poetry, providing a wide perspective on the nature of cultural exchange between England and Bohemia in the later fourteenth century. The contributors consider such matters as court culture and politics, the writings of Richard Rolle, artistic style, Troy stories, historiographic writing and travel narrative; they highlight the debt Chaucer owed to Bohemian culture, and the affinities between English and Bohemian literary production, whether in the use of Petrarch's tale of Griselde, the iconography of the tapster figure, or satires on the Passion of Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although medieval English music has been relatively neglected in comparison with repertoire from France and Italy, there are few classical musicians today who have not listened to the thirteenth-century song ‘Sumer is icumen in’, or read of the achievements and fame of fifteenth-century composer John Dunstaple. Similarly, the identification of a distinctively English musical style (sometimes understood as the contenance angloise) has been made on numerous occasions by writers exploring the extent to which English ideas influenced polyphonic composition abroad. Angel song: Medieval English music in history examines the ways in which the standard narratives of English musical history have been crafted, from the Middle Ages to the present. Colton challenges the way in which the concept of a canon of English music has been built around a handful of pieces, composers and practices, each of which offers opportunities for a reappraisal of English musical and devotional cultures between 1250 and 1460.

("Rob") Rayburn. A man of scholarly gifts and a shepherd's heart, Rob not only faithfully served a single congregation for his entire ministerial career, but also contributed to the wider church through his perceptive theological writings. Just as Rob embodied pastoral warmth, intellectual rigor, and an appreciation for the catholicity of the Christian tradition, so too the essays of this "ecclesial Festschrift" seek to bring scholarly expertise into the service of Christ's church.
