Download or read book Soul Food written by Joyce White and published by William Morrow Cookbooks. This book was released on 1998-01-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Joyce White moved to New York City from Alabama, she left small-town life behind and landed ajob as a food editor at a major women's magazine. Weekends, however, found her visiting churches in Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvestant, looking for a taste of home. Food has long been a part of the spiritual life of African-American churches, and what she found there, along with what she missed from home, was the comforting blend of cooking and fellowship that feeds both the body and soul. In this warm and joyful collection, White offers more than 150 recipes for the foods that worshipers look forward to after services, and she captures the spirit of these sociable meals with warm, conversational and occasionally poignant reflections from African-American churchgoers around the United States. "We don't just come to church service and leave," says a retired nurse who directs hospitality for a large church in Los Angeles. "Many of us stay here half the day. That way we get a chance to rub shoulders and see what is going on or going wrong with each other." From delicious renditions of classics such as Sugar-Crusted Biscuits to updated favorites such as Black Beans with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, as well as special fare for entertaining and Kwaanza, the pages of Soul Food are alive with the spirit and love of African-American churches -- and the terrific food to be found there.

Book Synopsis Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood by : Trisha Yearwood
Download or read book Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood written by Trisha Yearwood and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Country music star and bestselling cookbook author Trisha Yearwood, host of Food Network’s Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, is back with an encore of recipes that once again share her family traditions and warm home-grown cooking style. In her debut cookbook, Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen, Trisha proved that there’s much more to her than an award-winning country music career, as she welcomed us into her kitchen and served up a feast of flavorful meals and heartwarming personal anecdotes. Now, in Cooking for Family and Friends, Trisha opens her life and her kitchen once more with a trove of recipes from a lifetime of potlucks and colorful gatherings. Trisha has that southern hospitality gene and she’s a big believer that cooking for someone else is an act of love. From breakfasts in bed to hearty casseroles and festive holiday meals, Trisha’s delicious recipes are dedicated to her loved ones, including her husband Garth Brooks (who’s her number one cooking fan and the contributor of a few knockout recipes of his own). Trisha knows how good it feels to bring something to the table. It brings everyone closer together if they’ve had a hand in preparing a meal. These recipes all come with memories attached—of potlucks with good friends, church suppers, family fish fries, and beach picnics, Mother’s Day, and Christmas gatherings. Many are handed down from her mother, her aunts and cousins, or longtime friends, while others are her own contemporary improvisations on classic southern fare. Each one—whether a main dish, a tasty side, or a decadent dessert—comes with a heartwarming story from Trisha’s life that may remind you of some of your own favorite family foods, or inspire you to create new traditions. You don’t have to be a southerner to enjoy Yearwood family specialties such as: • Hot Corn Dip • Cornbread Salad with French Dressing • Baked Bean Casserole • Jambalaya • Pumpkin Roll • Old Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake Plus, Trisha (and her sister and mother) offer up loads of practical advice, on everything from easily icing a cake to cutting a slice of pie, time-saving tips; and ingredient substitutions. With full-color photographs taken at Trisha’s home, this soulful and sincere testament to a southern life well-lived will delight both country music fans and home cooks everywhere.

Book Synopsis 100 Year Old Recipes by : Robert W. Surridge
Download or read book 100 Year Old Recipes written by Robert W. Surridge and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07-27 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the neighborhood grandmothers used to tell my mother: “If Bobby wants to eat chocolate cake for breakfast...let him eat the cake...it has all the things that are good for him...eggs, flour, butter, milk, and chocolate!” Not exactly the advice of today, however the ladies of the Kingston Presbyterian Church must have agreed because over half of the 425 recipes in this cookbook are for desserts. Loaded with historic recipes, this cookbook is guaranteed to return you once again to your grandma's kitchen. To be sure that you get the same results that grandma did you will need to use period ingredients: real butter, cream, and so on, when using these recipes. Otherwise, they will not taste the same and some may not work at all. Old recipes were designed for use with unbleached flour and often will not work with bleached flour because of additives and bleaching agents that cause the flour to act differently. The recipes also may not work properly when you substitute modern ingredients for the use of lard in cooking. Old recipes also used different units of measurement than we do today. Standardized measurements did not appear until 1896. Where teaspoons or tablespoons are mentioned they are the spoons people ate or served with, a cup meant a teacup and a glass or tumbler was a small water glass. Readers are forewarned of other challenges to preparing these recipes. For instance, often the recipes are simply a list of ingredients without instructions. Cooking times and temperatures are a more modern invention and a recipe like the one for Beaf Loaf tells us to “Bake an hour and a quarter” but is silent as to the oven temperature. On the other hand, the recipe for Oyster Pie says to “bake in a quick oven” without mention to how long to bake the pie. Or, for that matter what a “quick oven” means. Other instructions like “cook until done” or “milk to make a batter” may also challenge readers aspiring to cook like their grandmother and/or great grandmother. Quite a challenge, but I am sure your grandmother will be there with you helping you recreate history!
