ARIMINUM AND 8ELEUCIA. A.D. 359. The year 359 was memorable for a double council, in both branches of which Gallic bishops played an important part. Constantius at first contemplated but a single meeting, with the object, as appears probable, of bringing about a union among the various sections of Arianism. Nicomedia was the place fixed, and an edict was issued in 858 to summon the most distinguished bishops from the various ecclesiastical provinces. 8Some had already begun their journey, when a frightful calamity put an end to the design. The great city of Nicomedia was almost wholly destroyed by an earthquake, and by fires consequent upon it. The bishop of the place and his magnificent cathedral alike perished. It became necessary to choose another place of assemblage, and an edict was issued directing the bishops to present themselves at Nicsea in the beginning of the following summer. In no long time this was countermanded by another decree, which commanded the prelates to stop each in the place where he might happen to be when it reached him, until further order should be taken as to the spot to which they should be directed. Nothing in Tudor times can be placed in comparison with this treatment of bishops. The fact was, that the emperor, himself a Semiarian, was much governed by that party of still less orthodox opinions which was called Anomsean, and which in the theological compass might be called Semiarian-by-Arian. And these politic persons were afraid, with very good reason, that in a truly general assembly of the bishops of the Catholic Church, the Semiarian party--which contained many good men, of whom the best Catholic writers never speak harshly--might coalesce with the orthodox, and overbear all opposition....

Book excerpt: Following the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire, local Christian leaders were confronted with the problem of how to conceptualize and administer their regional churches. As Gregory Halfond shows, the bishops of post-Roman Gaul oversaw a transformation in the relationship between church and state. He shows that by constituting themselves as a corporate body, the Gallic episcopate was able to wield significant political influence on local, regional, and kingdom-wide scales. Gallo-Frankish bishops were conscious of their corporate membership in an exclusive order, the rights and responsibilities of which were consistently being redefined and subsequently expressed through liturgy, dress, physical space, preaching, and association with cults of sanctity. But as Halfond demonstrates, individual bishops, motivated by the promise of royal patronage to provide various forms of service to the court, often struggled, sometimes unsuccessfully, to balance their competing loyalties. However, even the resulting conflicts between individual bishops did not, he shows, fundamentally undermine the Gallo-Frankish episcopate's corporate identity or integrity. Ultimately, Halfond provides a far more subtle and sophisticated understanding of church-state relations across the early medieval period.

Book excerpt: Skin-clad barbarians ransacking Rome remains a popular image of the "decline and fall" of the Roman Empire, but why, when, and how the Empire actually fell are still matters of debate among students of classical history. In this pioneering study, Ralph W. Mathisen examines the "fall" in one part of the western Empire, Gaul, to better understand the shift from Roman to Germanic power that occurred in the region during the fifth century AD Mathisen uncovers two apparently contradictory trends. First, he finds that barbarian settlement did provoke significant changes in Gaul, including the disappearance of most secular offices under the Roman imperial administration, the appropriation of land and social influence by the barbarians, and a rise in the overall level of violence. Yet he also shows that the Roman aristocrats proved remarkably adept at retaining their rank and status. How did the aristocracy hold on? Mathisen rejects traditional explanations and demonstrates that rather than simply opposing the barbarians, or passively accepting them, the Roman aristocrats directly responded to them in various ways. Some left Gaul. Others tried to ignore the changes wrought by the newcomers. Still others directly collaborated with the barbarians, looking to them as patrons and holding office in barbarian governments. Most significantly, however, many were willing to change the criteria that determined membership in the aristocracy. Two new characteristics of the Roman aristocracy in fifth-century Gaul were careers in the church and greater emphasis on classical literary culture. These findings shed new light on an age in transition. Mathisen's theory that barbarian integration into Roman society was a collaborative process rather than a conquest is sure to provoke much thought and debate. All historians who study the process of power transfer from native to alien elites will want to consult this work.
