Book excerpt: Excerpt from History, First Baptist Church, Maiden, North Carolina N o effort has been made to include controversies or any matters of an unpleasant nature. That these have existed periodically is only natural and peculiar to all. Churches; however, The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones. It is our pleasure to take pride in the good. With the publishing of this history, First Baptist Church of Maiden embarks on a new phase of its journey. Although we face a new world and a new program, with out precedent to guide us, our yesterdays will aid us great ly to enter successfully into tomorrow. The light of the past will help show us the best path for the future. Just as this history is like a ladder with each pastor as a rung rungs of equal rather than ascending importance so the days of our future history may well form the ladder that leads the church into greater success and significance in the Master's Kingdom. Our wealth of tomorrow depends upon our deposits today. Yesterday we lived in anticipa tion of tomorrow-a tomorrow with adequate buildings and people and ministry. While we may be tempted to live on yesterday's dreams which have become today's realities, let us shun the temptation and move forward and upward upon the rungs of the great spiritual ladder which our great Creator has placed before us. May the joys and de lights of those who pen our history seventy-five years hence be as great as have been ours as we have penned the history of those who have preceded us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enter Into His Gates: History of the First Presbyterian Church, Maxton, North Carolina, 1858 When the large immigration of 1746 began, the Carolina back-country was largely uninhabited and undeveloped. The sea-coast towns of Wilmington and Charleston were growing rapidly. It was to these ports that the boats of the Highlanders came. Most of the newcomers desired to move inland because of their agricultural interests and the availability of land. Traditionally clannish, the settlers pushed up the Cape Fear to find their kinsmen who had preceded them. A settlement at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear grew into the town of Campbellton, today the city of Fayetteville. Expanding out from this central location, the Highlanders moved into all of southeastern North Carolina. The expansion was slow and difficult, for the rivers had to be forded, the swamps were deep and thick, and sickness and wild animals were foes to be reckoned with. How different from the beauty of Scotland was this unexplored, swampy land! To plow their fields and look forward to the next day took faith and courage. Several hundred of the Highlanders made their way south of Campbell town, or Cross Creek as it became known, into the Rockfish Creek area, then gradually into the denser aiea on each side of the Raft Swamp, Drowning Creek, and the Lumbee River. As the Highlanders pushed into the territory of present-day Robeson County, they found some English settlers located in the southern section, and some isolated but friendly Indians located along the banks of the Lumbee. It was far from encouraging country. There were no roads worthy of the name until about 1800. There was not an official post office in the area until after 1800. The country was a wilderness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church of God: Eastern North Carolina The State of Eastern North Carolina has had a significant involvement in the Pentecostal movement and Church of God organization since its inception in the Twentieth Century movement. Therefore, it becomes important that data be researched and preserved as it relates to the Church of God. The state Council of Eastern North Carolina commissioned the State Centennial Committee which consists of the Reverend W. P. Pope, Jr., Millard Maynard, and L. L. Reeder. These men are to be commended for the excellent research material and data which they have completed. On behalf Of the State Council and Ministry of Eastern North Carolina, I express deep appreciation to Reverend W. P. Pope, Chairman, for his leadership and direction to Reverend Maynard and Reverend Reeder for their diligent involvement. May this history serve as in informative and inspirational book to those who read it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of First Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, North Carolina, 1816-1891 At all times and in all places, the history of the beginnings and the progress of Presbyterianism has been intimately connected with the history of the rise and development of education. These two things have been as intimately associated with Raleigh as in other parts of the United States so that any account of Presbyterians in this city must be preceded by a brief narrative of facts and its first institution of learning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History: First Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, North Carolina, 1786-1961 A book of history is like a telescope through which one may look into the past ages. See the customs, achievements, shortcomings of those who lived before him. Antiquity comes alive to his clouded memo ries, and he is able to comprehend the truth or falsity of the many tales and traditions which he has heard. Moreover, he may profit by the fortunes or misfortunes of his forebears. There is a well worn tradition that our Church minutes up to 1857 were lost in a fire, which is probably true, but there are no refer ences in the immediately succeeding minutes to prove it, much less to give any details which we would ordinarily expect. There may havebeen a fire in 1846 or 1847. We do not know what became of the Meet ing House which was replaced with a new one, the construction of which began in the early part of 1847. It is possible this old Meeting House was burned as was the first one on Knobs Creek, and the records up to that time burned in it. But if that be the case the question arises: Where are the minutes of the next ten years? Another possibility is that they could have been burned in a fire which destroyed a parsonage in the early part of 1886. Could the minute books have been divided, with those up to 1857 in the parsonage and burned, and those after 1857 somewhere else and saved? The most likely fire to have destroyed them was one mentioned in the February 25, 1860 minutes but there are some questions about this fire which will have to go unanswered. In that con ference it is stated No minutes were read as a consequence of their having been burnt up in the recent fire. Where was the fire in the Church, parsonage, Clerk's home? When? What else belonging to the Church was lost? Something else is strange about this conference: The two previous leaves in that minute book and the bottom sections of three leaves previous to them have, some time, been cut out of the book with no explanation of why it was done. We presume this fire to have oc curred the month or quarter preceding that February 25 conference, depending upon whether it was a monthly or quarterly conference; and it was those minutes that were not read. If in fact however, this was the fire which tradition tells us destroyed our minutes up to 1857, the logical assumption is that those minutes were in a book or books at the scene of the fire while the minutes beginning with March 27, 1857, the earliest we have, to February 25, 1860 were in another book being kept somewhere else at the time. It is a fact that our March 27, 1857 minutes do begin a new book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From a Mustard Seed: A History of the First Baptist Church, Hamlet, North Carolina Records in the Register of Deeds office in the Richmond County Courthouse in Rock-ingham, North Carolina were very helpful. I wish to thank Mrs. Agnes Carroll and her co-workers, especially Miss Nichols, for assisting me in finding many interesting documents. The search for pictures of former pastors was most time consuming, but I am pleased that pictures of all pastors except the first, Rev. Thomas Benjamin Newberry, were eventually obtained. Many of these pictures came from old newspaper clippings made available through the cooperation of Miss Effie Ormsby of Effie's Studio. I am grateful to her not only for her superb work but also for the generous and unselfish giving of her time. Through contacts of members of former preachers' families and friends, the sketches of their lives were secured. I gratefully acknowledge this help and give the source of information on each pastor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod and Ministerium of North Carolina, in Commemoration of the Completion of the First Century of Its Existence The history of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina naturally begins with the history of the first Lutheran Settlements in that wilderness, then but recently vacated by the Indians, now known as the Piedmont section of North Carolina. Early records of colonization are few, difficult to find, and, when found, meagre in the narrative of facts that we most desire to know. But careful research makes it tolerably certain that the first German settlements in the Piedmont section were made in those localities now known as Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, about the year I747. 3' Saunders' Colonial Records state that, in the year I755, Governor Arthur Dobbs Visited these localities and found twenty two families of Germans and Swiss, who had settled there some seven or eight years previously, that is, about I747. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the History, Art and Architecture of the Church of St. Lawrence, Asheville, North Carolina Early in the morning as the sun shot'his first rays in great splendor over the distant eastern hills, diffusing all around a flood of golden light far more brilliant than St. Peter's illuminated, I erected an altar upon the summit of Mount Mitchell and said Mass. It was the thirtieth of August, the Feast of St. Rose of Lima, the first flower of the American Church. There could be no temple more sublime or more worthy of the Holy Sacri fice which I offered on that Altar. The majestic peaks that stood around like the ancients before the throne of the Lamb, seemed to bare their heads in adoration before their Maker, and I imagined that they rejoiced, after centuries of waiting, in being able to pay their first act of jubilant homage to the Hand that raised them, the witnesses of His power, wisdom, and goodness. All present partook of the Bread of Life, one a sincere convert, A. L. Cardell, and his children, youths in their teens; Mrs. Anne Keenan, and a daughter of Terence Keenan, afterwards an edifying Sister of Mercy, known in religion as Sister Genevieve. This was in 1866, and in 1868, Bishop James Gibbons, then the young Vicar Apostolic of North Carolina, and afterwards the saintly and famous Cardinal, made his way by stage coach and on horseback to Asheville, at that time a little mountain village almost unknown to fame. It was a journey full of hardships, but full too of hope, for the young Bishop had the gift of being able to see and to call out the best in every one Who came within the reach of his own radiant spirit of Faith and Love; and he recog nized then what he frequently said afterwards, that, while the people of North Carolina are generally ignorant of the true teachings of the Catholic Church and are therefore prejudiced against it, they sincerely believe in Our Lord Jesus Christ as their God and Saviour, and thus in approaching them, one has always this Faith as a starting point.
