Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in America This volume belongs to a series intended to give a com prehensive history of National Churches. In sending forth that portion which treats of the American Church, it may be difficult to convince some of my readers of the propriety of calling the Protestant Episcopal Church the National Church of America. Strictly speaking, there has not been for many years any religious body in the United States which could, either from recognition by law and custom or from numerical predominance, claim to be the National Church. But when it is remembered that in the beginning, what is popularly known as the Episcopal Church was by charter and law established in the older colonies; that more than any other ecclesiastical organisation she had to do with constituting the nation, and, in the period of the Civil War, with its maintenance and reunion; and that, while conservative and Catholic in her character, she yet is distinctively American in spirit - there would seem to be ample justification for thus using the title American Church. A still further warrant for this use may be found in the present position and prospects of this Church, as described in the concluding chapter. Enemies are actively attempting to undermine the religious institutions of the country, while friends are earnestly proposing many plans for removing their abuses, and increasing their efficiency. Under these circumstances, it appears to the Author that a fair and impartial account of the Church in America is calculated to supply encouragement, and to suggest valuable ideas. The historical portion of the subject exhibits a remote branch of the Reformed Church, planted amid serious difficulties, and slowly growing up uncared-for and neglected by the State. Unable to obtain the necessary means of self-propagation, it maintains a languid existence until an undesired catastrophe allows it the possibility of healthy extension. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America To the American Editor of this volume it seems im portant, that the interesting historical facts contained in this Church History, should be more exten sively known in this country. In answer to the question, How is it that the history of the Church in these United States has been written by a Prelate of the Church in England We may be answered, that the Opportunity afforded in England, to consult the works of the earlier writers upon America and the correspondence of the earlier missionaries to America, has been embraced by the Author and most laboriously improved. He has brought out many facts and selected many very interesting inci dents before generally unknown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Book and Bibliographical Guide for American Church History Through the publication of several source collections, much has been done to assist fthe student of American political, social and economic history. But no corresponding assistance has been given to such as are interested in the more specifically religious history of our nation. It is true of course, that for the colonial period, political history to a considerable degree resolves itself into the religious and that, therefore, the source books already published contain much material that is serviceable to the church historian. For the national period, however, with its multiplication of church organization, its controversies and divisions, its nation-wide revivals, and its mission ary extension at home and abroad, no source material has been assembled for convenient access. Hence the publication of this volume, which within the briefest possible space embodies the most significant documents for the entire-field of American church history. The compiler wishes to state that the viewpoint from which he has approached the subject is that of regarding the church, not as the custodian of some divinely-revealed deposit of truth, nor as super naturally detached from an environment that is ever affecting her inner life and organization. In his selection of material he has been guided by the principle of choosing only such documents as most significantly set forth the contribution that the church has made to the progress of American society, and the manner in which from time to time she has adjusted herself to her new and changing environ ment. Denominationalism, therefore, has been relegated to the background. Ardent denominationalists. Will find their respective bodies recognized only in so far as these have played a strategic part in the development of American Christianity as a whole. The only exception is that in the case of some small but significant groups, material has been inserted to remove prevailing ignorance or miscon ception. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Churches of America In the year 1607, under a charter of King James the First, what is known as the Popham Colony was established near the mouth of the Kennebec River. Worship was maintained there for the few months of its existence. But no man knows where was the altar which was established for so short a time. With the arrival of Captains Newport and Smith in the James River and the establishment of Jamestown, which we are celebrating in this year 1907, begins the history of Christian wor ship conducted regularly by Englishmen for three centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America This volume is designed to trace concisely but clearly the History and Principles of the Presbyterian Church from the time of Henry VIII. to the close of the General Assembly of 1899. The effort has been to present the facts in such history, and note their influence; meanwhile, to give special attention to the all-important phase of the inner Christian life of the Church. In ascertaining the knowledge in respect to the latter subject, attention has been directed, as occasion required, to the lives and labors of leading men in the ministry, as well as laymen, around whom clustered influences for good, that often extended far and wide in their respective communities, and even to the Church at large. The author has availed himself of highly important and original documents pertaining to the Congregationalists and Presbyterians during the Colonial period. (See authorities consulted.) When preparing his "Four Hundred Years of American History," the attention of the author was often drawn to the influence of the Presbyterian Church during the last half century of the Colonial times and also during the current growth of our national life. This influence was felt upon the domestic and Christian as well as upon the political life of the people. In our country, governed as it is by representatives elected by the people themselves, the moral connection between political and church life is consistent and peculiarly intimate. It therefore comes within the scope of this history to trace the influences, good or bad, of the events and policies, whereby the condition of public affairs has incidentally aided the progress of the Church, and sometimes had a retarding effect, as in the case of war or of financial or industrial disturbances whereby all the citizens were more or less affected.
