Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Russian Revolution The epochal changes which revolutionized the very foundations of Russian life had a rousing effect upon the rest of the world. Where changes of such magni tude and far-reaching consequences are concerned, it is inevitable that the movement causing them be both extolled and condemned by doctrinaires of opposite tempers, without either' much critical regard for the exact course of events, or much historical discrimina tion of them. Hence, before any judgment worthy of respect may be passed upon such a cataclysmic event, it is imperative for a careful investigator to make sure of the exact facts upon which to base his opinions and conclusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church of Russia To remove as far as it is possible this ignorance, and thus promote the restoration of that inter-communion which is so much to be desired between two great branches of the Catholic Church, which is a duty prescribed by our Lord Himself, the great Head of the Church, for which both Churches continu ally pray, and which would prove a tower of strength to either party against their common adversaries, must surely be an object well worthy the attention of every reflecting and well disposed member of our Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Orthodox Church: Organization, Situation, Activity Convened when the Revolution was at its most critical point, the Church Council became a platform for people who by conviction and habit continued to link religion with politics. But, despite that, one of the Council's acts was of decisive importance for the later development of the 'life of our Church the re-establishment of the Patriarchate. This act gave the Russian Orthodox Church a firm basis for establishing church life in accordance with the canons in the new and still unstable condi tions of a state structure which had only just been born in the fire of the Great October Socialist Revolution. By 1920 the country was in desperate financial straits and more than 20 million Russians had died. And by 1950, a third of the globe had embraced communism. The triumph of Communism sets a profound puzzle. How did the Bolsheviks win power and then cling to it amid the chaos they had created? Traditional histories remain a captive to Marxist ideas about class struggle. Analysing never before used files from the Tsarist military archives, McMeekin argues that war is the answer. The revolutionaries were aided at nearly every step by Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland who sought to benefit - politically and economically - from the changes overtaking the country. To make sense of Russia's careening path the essential question is not Lenin's "who, whom?", but who benefits?

The notes deal summarily with some questions which are omitted in the text; and further they are designed to help further study by references given to the sources and to leading Russian authorities on some of the many topics subordinate to the main history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Russian Revolution In 1917 the social and economic fabric of the land was shot to pieces. Ten million peasants dragged from their ploughs were dying in the trenches. Millions more were perishing of cold and hunger in the cities While the corrupt ministers intrigued with the Germans and the court held bacchanalian revels with the notorious monk, Rasputin. Even the Cadet, Milyukov, was forced to say: History does not know Of another govern ment so stupid, so dishonest, so cowardly, so treacherous. All governments rest Upon the patience Of the poor. It seems everlasting, but there comes an end to it. It came in Russia in March, 1917. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An eyewitness account of the world-changing uprising—from the author of Memoirs of a Revolutionary. “A truly remarkable individual . . . an heroic work” (Richard Allday of Counterfire). Brimming with the honesty and passionate conviction for which he has become famous, Victor Serge’s account of the first year of the Russian Revolution—through all of its achievements and challenges—captures both the heroism of the mass upsurge that gave birth to Soviet democracy and the crippling circumstances that began to chip away at its historic gains. Year One of the Russian Revolution is Serge’s attempt to defend the early days of the revolution against those, like Stalin, who would claim its legacy as justification for the repression of dissent within Russia. Praise for Victor Serge “Serge is one of the most compelling of twentieth-century ethical and literary heroes.” —Susan Sontag, MacArthur Fellow and winner of the National Book Award “His political recollections are very important, because they reflect so well the mood of this lost generation . . . His articles and books speak for themselves, and we would be poorer without them.” —Partisan Review “I know of no other writer with whom Serge can be very usefully compared. The essence of the man and his books is to be found in his attitude to the truth.” —John Berger, Booker Prize–winning author “The novels, poems, memoirs and other writings of Victor Serge are among the finest works of literature inspired by the October Revolution that brought the working class to power in Russia in 1917.” —Scott McLemee, writer of the weekly “Intellectual Affairs” column for Inside Higher Ed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church in Russia Today This is just one little word about the general aim of this book, which is not meant to be controversial. The Catholics in Russia fully realise from the outset that if anything is to be achieved at all, they must work in the spirit of love. This is the reason why those who have rallied together around our common cause remember that no malice should be borne for the sufferings of the past, no malice for the still greater sufferings of the present and for those looming ahead in the future. In the past the Catholics in Russia had a Christian Government and a Christian Church to struggle against, and the odds were then not so terrific. In the gigantic struggle of to-day more fearful forces have come into play. The Church in Russia fights not only against political enemies, but against the embodied spirits of darkness. And yet the great truth stands clear before every Russian Catholic that the gates of hell, even of the reddest of hells, cannot prevail against his Church. And this realisation is what helps him to go through everything with a stout heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian Revolution of 1917 transformed the face of the Russian empire, politically, economically, socially, and culturally, and also profoundly affected the course of world history for the rest of the twentieth century. Now, to mark the centenary of this epochal event, historian Steve Smith presents a panoramic account of the history of the Russian empire, from the last years of the nineteenth century, through the First World War and the revolutions of 1917 and the establishment of the Bolshevik regime, to the end of the 1920s, when Stalin simultaneously unleashed violent collectivization of agriculture and crash industrialization upon Russian society. Drawing on recent archivally-based scholarship, Russia in Revolution pays particular attention to the varying impact of the Revolution on the various groups that made up society: peasants, workers, non-Russian nationalities, the army, women and the family, young people, and the Church. In doing so, it provides a fresh way into the big, perennial questions about the Revolution and its consequences: why did the attempt by the tsarist government to implement political reform after the 1905 Revolution fail?; why did the First World War bring about the collapse of the tsarist system?; why did the attempt to create a democratic system after the February Revolution of 1917 not get off the ground?; why did the Bolsheviks succeed in seizing and holding on to power?; why did they come out victorious from a punishing civil war?; why did the New Economic Policy they introduced in 1921 fail?; and why did Stalin come out on top in the power struggle inside the Bolshevik party after Lenin's death in 1924? A final chapter then reflects on the larger significance of 1917 for the history of the twentieth century - and, for all its terrible flaws, what the promise of the Revolution might mean for us today.
