Download or read book Magna Carta written by Dan Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-04 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully produced account of the signing, impact and legacy of Magna Carta, a document that became one of the most influential statements in the history of democracy, as part of the stunning landmark library series. On a summer's day in 1215 a beleaguered English monarch met a group of disgruntled barons in a meadow by the river Thames named Runnymede. Beset by foreign crisis and domestic rebellion, King John was fast running out of options. On 15 June he reluctantly agreed to fix his regal seal to a document that would change the world. A milestone in the development of constitutional politics and the rule of law, the 'Great Charter' established an Englishman's right to Habeas Corpus and set limits to the exercise of royal power. For the first time a group of subjects had forced an English king to agree to a document that limited his powers by law and protected their rights. Dan Jones's elegant and authoritative narrative of the making and legacy of Magna Carta is amplified by profiles of the barons who secured it and a full text of the charter in both Latin and English.

Book excerpt: What is the Church? What is it supposed to be? Judging from the literally thousands of denominations with their various and conflicting doctrines and practices, is it even feasible to determine the proper definition of the Church? If the New Testament is to be accepted as the basis for the Church's definition, what we must know is this. When its Founder Jesus Christ described his Church, He described it as "one" Church. He further insisted that his Church should be unified-and unified in a visible fashion. His Apostles would then reinforce Jesus' teaching in their numerous writings. Given both the Source and the substance of these criteria, therefore, as long as the Church fails or refuses to aspire to this standard, whatever it may be, it has no ground for laying claim to being Christ's Church! The Church's Charter is an endeavor to recall the Protestant Church to its Christ-mandated and apostolically-sanctioned model. It calls on the churches to exorcise from their separate sanctuaries the plethora of man-made doctrines and practices which have proven to be so divisive and so inimical to the One Church's purity and effectiveness, and to receive and affirm the apostolic pattern as it is set forth in the New Testament in order to discover the basis of its intended unity. Only then may those churches which lay claim to being Christ's Church, in fact, prove to be so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Charter of the Church: Six Lectures on the Spiritual Principle of Nonconformity The Charter of the Church is not in any saying of Jesus, who, perhaps, never used the word church. It is not a documentary charter at all. Such a textual commission would make the Church what it always tends to be in the hands of those who base it on fiats, documents, and protocols - a chartered company, licensed to exploit the world by means whose ethics are those of an institution rather than a conscience - of an enterprise rather than a cause. Download or read book Magna Carta written by J. C. Holt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised edition of J. C. Holt's classic study of Magna Carta, the Great Charter, offering the most authoritative analysis of England's most famous constitutional text. The book sets the events of 1215 and the Charter itself in the context of the law, politics and administration of England and Europe in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Additionally, a lengthy new introduction by two of Holt's former pupils, George Garnett and John Hudson, examines a range of issues raised by scholarship since publication of the second edition in 1992. These include the possible role of Archbishop Stephen Langton; the degree of influence of Roman and Canon Law upon those who drafted the Charter; other aspects of the intellectual setting of the Charter, in particular political thinking in London; the Continental context of the events of 1212–15; and the legal and jurisdictional issues that affected the Charter's clauses on justice.
