Book excerpt: Physician-sleuth Dr Gabriel Taverner has to face his greatest challenge yet - a serious danger from the East threatens not just his life, but everyone he loves! All aboard this adventurous historical mystery set in the early seventeenth century. March, 1605. Country doctor and former ship surgeon Gabriel Taverner is ready for his next adventure. Since he discovered that his injury from years ago doesn't affect his nautical suitability anymore, he can't wait to leave Devon - this time for his new employer Walter Haverleigh, a successful merchant, who wants Gabriel to tend to the crew of the Luipaard while sailing the Eastern seas. As years pass by with Gabriel travelling, his family and friends back home are struggling with the substitute physician he found for them before he left so hurriedly. Doctor Maudsley Cheverell turned out to be as incompetent as they come and unpleasant at best. So when he is found dead in a ditch one day, no one seems to be too surprised or sad about his untimely death. Only when examining the body, it seems like Cheverell was tortured using a specific method from the East . . . Is there a connection to Gabriel and his time in Asia? Where is he now? And how did the quiet English town of Tavy Valley suddenly get involved in a dangerous plot and most importantly, will everyone come out of it alive? The last instalment in the Gabriel Taverner historical mystery series delivers a grand finale, a story with lots of twist and turns, great nautical adventures and beautiful settings: "A must for historical mystery readers" (Booklist).

Book excerpt: While bok choy is now a staple on Western grocery store shelves, other Asian vegetables remain unknown—even though they’re delicious, nutritious, and easy to grow in northern climates. Caroline, Stéphanie, and Patricia Wang, three sisters of Cantonese descent, have made it their mission to introduce gardeners, cooks, and vegetable lovers of all flavours to wider sources of sustenance. Organized around fifteen Asian vegetables that are presented according to the rhythm of the seasons, this lush, full-colour book offers advice on growing and harvesting organic crops intended for both weekend and commercial gardeners, along with a host of ideas to preserve and prepare them, including over forty recipes, some of which have been developed by renowned chefs. The Wang sisters complement the book’s practical advice by offering thoughts on Asian vegetables from a cultural point of view and sharing the importance of these foods within their own family, members of whom left China to immigrate to Madagascar before settling in Canada. Asian Vegetables is a generous and gorgeous tribute to good food, to the land, and the importance of strong roots.

Book excerpt: An engaging introduction to the use of game theory to study lingistic meaning. In Meaningful Games, Robin Clark explains in an accessible manner the usefulness of game theory in thinking about a wide range of issues in linguistics. Clark argues that we use grammar strategically to signal our intended meanings: our choices as speaker are conditioned by what choices the hearer will make interpreting what we say. Game theory—according to which the outcome of a decision depends on the choices of others—provides a formal system that allows us to develop theories about the kind of decision making that is crucial to understanding linguistic behavior. Clark argues the only way to understand meaning is to grapple with its social nature—that it is the social that gives content to our mental lives. Game theory gives us a framework for working out these ideas. The resulting theory of use will allow us to account for many aspects of linguistic meaning, and the grammar itself can be simplified. The results are nevertheless precise and subject to empirical testing. Meaningful Games offers an engaging and accessible introduction to game theory and the study of linguistic meaning. No knowledge of mathematics beyond simple algebra is required; formal definitions appear in special boxes outside the main text. The book includes an extended argument in favor of the social basis of meaning; a brief introduction to game theory, with a focus on coordination games and cooperation; discussions of common knowledge and games of partial information; models of games for pronouns and politeness; and the development of a system of social coordination of reference.
