Book excerpt: The chronicles of Sinka expose the reader to the realities that an African female child is exposed to. Especially in the not so modernized regions of the continent, ranging from female genital mutilation, sexual abuse, lack of education, and martial law. The chronicles achieve by taking the reader on a journey through life from the view of Sinka Kanu. It takes the reader on an adventurous tale with many twists of fate. And the often unfortunate luck of the protagonist. It also shows a strong resolve that was able to surpass and survive all that life threw at it and shows what true love looks like. The chronicle ends with a transformation in Sinka that makes her a solution to the problems of many concerning sexual abuse and a source of hope to many.

Book excerpt: The Chronicles of a Colossus explores the timelines adventures of Sinka, a young Sierra Leonean girl who has had it all shades of rough-from losing her parents at a young age, then moving on to being shepherded to her uncle's house where she had her first and worst taste of abuse. This occurred not only from not only her uncle, but his sons. From there, the leeway was then open for insensitivity, waywardness, objectifying of the male folk, and thuggery of all manners and proportions. Life seemed to turn rosy for her when she met Musa, her sweetheart of whom she met in her college days. Soon a sweet romance blossomed. Still, life was not done with her. A blast from her past resurfaces that is so shameful and deriding, but the love she shared with her beau was out of this world-he dared to be with her, even to the cost of his life. She, rising from the ashes of this all-time brand of sorrow, decides to fight child sexual abuse to a standstill. This book is a feeble effort to highlight the ills and fallouts of child sexual abuse, as well as its many branches and tributaries, with a view to discourage it in its entirety. It is hoped that the aim will be holistically achieved and serve as a call to action for all and sundry.

Book excerpt: It is the summer of 1965 and things are looking up for ten-year-old Johnboy Taylor in the Townhead district of Glasgow. Not only has he made two new pals, but their dream of owning their own pigeon loft or 'dookit' and competing with the city's grown-up 'doo-men' in the sport they love, could soon become a reality. The only problem is that The Mankys don't have the dosh to pay for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Lady Luck begins to shine down on them when Pay Molloy, aka The Big Man, one of Glasgow's top heavies askes them to do him a wee favour. The Mankys are soon embroiled in an adult world of gangsters, police corruption, violence and crime.

Book excerpt: 'Germany wasn't really a place for settling in, because after the war it was pretty devastated, and there wasn't really a chance to start again, so I thought Id come to England. It was a case of people between 18 and 50 and you had to be fit because it was mainly physical work. For men, it was mines and agricultural work and brick factories and women, mainly textiles.''We were thinking it was temporary. We were thinking the war would restart with the west and the east, and that the west would win, and we would be going home. But, it wasn't like that.'After the Second World War, thousands of Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian refugees, uprooted by war and conflict in their homelands, were recruited from Displaced Persons Camps in Germany to fill labor shortages in Britain. This unknown episode in Britain's immigration history is brought to life in this book, through interview extracts and documentary sources. Women were the first recruits to the so-called European Volunteer Worker Schemes, in which 25,000 Baltic men and women came to Britain between 1946 and 1951, to work in hospitals, textiles, agriculture, coal mining and other undermanned areas of industry. Initially regarding their stay in Britain as temporary, a majority of these Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian men and women remained in Britain their whole lives. Recently joined by more migrants from the Baltic States, this book tells the story of Britain's Baltic communities, from the earliest accounts of their arrival in Britain to the present day.
