Download or read book Bloody Paralyser written by Rob Langham and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bloody Paralyser: The Giant Handley Page Bombers of the First World War tells the story of the largest British bombers of the First World War and the men who flew them. In 1915, the biggest plane ever seen in Britain took flight for the first time a twin-engine monster with a 100- foot wingspan, designed to be a Bloody Paralyser to the Germans. Operating mainly at night, the Handley Page bombers attacked Germany and Germanoccupied towns and cities, disrupting the enemy s industry and transport and targeting U-boats that were causing heavy losses to merchant shipping. The men that flew in the Bloody Paralysers were the forerunners of the crews of Bomber Command in the Second World War, and now their story is told in their own words.

Book Synopsis Biplanes and Bombsights: British Bombing in World War I by : George K. Williams

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study measures wartime claims against actual results of the British bombing campaign against Germany in the Great War. Components of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), and the Royal Air Force (RAF) conducted bombing raids between July 1916 and the Armistice. Specifically, Number 3 Wing (RNAS), 41 Wing of Eighth Brigade (RFC), and the Independent Force (IF) bombed German targets from bases in France. Lessons supposedly gleaned from these campaigns heavily influenced British military aviation, underpinning RAF doctrine up to and into the Second World War. Fundamental discrepancies exist, however, between the official verdict and the first-hand evidence of bombing results gathered by intelligence teams of the RAF and the US Air Service. Results of the British bombing efforts were demonstrably more modest, and costs in casualties and wastage far steeper, than previously acknowledged. A preoccupation with “moral effect” came to dominate the British view of their aerial offensives. Maj Gen Hugh M. Trenchard played a pivotal role in bringing this misperception to the forefront of public consciousness. After the Armistice, the potential of strategic bombing was officially extolled to justify the RAF as an independent service. The Air Ministry’s final report must be evaluated as a partisan manifestation of this crusade and not as a definitive final assessment, as it has been mistakenly accepted previously. This study develops and substantiates a comprehensive evaluation of British long-range bombing in the First World War. Its findings run directly counter to the generally held opinion. Natural limitations, technical shortfalls, and aircrews lacking proficiency acted in concert with German defenses to produce far less results than those claimed.

Book Synopsis Chronicles of 55 Squadron R. F. C. R. A. F. by : Miller Leonard Miller
Download or read book Chronicles of 55 Squadron R. F. C. R. A. F. written by Miller Leonard Miller and published by . This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unusual unit history in that it was written at speed early in 1919 soon after the events it recounts. The author s history of his squadron from its inception and training at Castle Bromwich in 1916, down to the Armistice in November 1918 after its incorporation in the new RAF, cloaks the exploits of individuals under a veil of annymity, but it makes up for this in its recounting of the breezier side of war service - such as accounts of the doings of the squadron s animal mascots. After training on Avros in England, the squadron was equipped with the new DH4s before moving to France in the spring of 1917, in time for its blooding at the battle of Arras in April 1917. It also took part in the battle of Messines in June 1917. Based successively at Fienvillers and then Boisdinghem near St Omer, 55 patrolled over Flanders and the Belgian coast before being transferred south to Ochey and Tantonville in the French Vosges. From here it raided deep into Germany itself, hitting such targets as Mannheim and Kaiserslauten. Illustrated with black and white drawings; the book also comes with some fascinating appendices, such as the texts of airmen s song sung around the squadron s piano in the intervals between ops .

Book Synopsis Independent Force by : Keith Rennles

Book excerpt: In late 1916 and early 1917 the Royal Naval Air Service bombed Imperial Germany and whilst the attacks were not greatly successful they proved that targets could be reached inside the enemy. And when the Germans in turn started to bomb London in 1917, public opinion began to call for revenge attacks and plans were put in place. The Army and Navy for their part, wanted a resumption of attacks on Germany's war industries. General Smuts, a member of the War Cabinet, prepared a report whose main thrust was that a separate Air Ministry and Air Force should be set up, independent of the Army and Navy and that a strategic bomber force should be formed within this force, whose sole purpose was to attack Germany. Parliament approved in November 1917 and eventually the RAF was born in April 1918, and on 6 June the Independent Force was officially formed. Never before has a history of this force been written and Keith Rennles has patiently researched all documentary evidence and reports to piece together the day-by-day record of the IF's achievements and the tremendous contribution of its pilots and personnel. This is their story. Includes rare photographs. Essential reference for any student of 55, 99, 104 and 110 Squadrons.
