Book excerpt: Aerospace engineering is the primary field of engineering concerned with the development of aircraft and spacecraft. It is divided into two major and overlapping branches: aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. Aeronautics is the study of the science of flight. Aeronautics is the method of designing an airplane or other flying machine. Astronautics is often referred to as astronomical engineering. It is the science and technology of space flight and is a field of aerospace engineering that deals with machinery designed to work beyond the Earth's atmosphere. Astronautics works by applying scientific principles as well as engineering techniques to aviation technology. There are four basic areas that aeronautical engineers must understand in order to be able to design planes. To design a plane, engineers must understand all of these elements. Aeronautical engineers apply principles and concepts of engineering to create new aircraft containing the most current and sophisticated technologies. Airplanes, gliders and helicopters all stay to the principles within the flight science called aeronautics. These include physics concepts like Newton's laws of motion; aerodynamics, the motion of air; and Bernoulli's principle of lift. Aeronautical engineering is the design and construction of airplanes and other aircraft that fly within the atmosphere. Aerospace engineering encompasses aeronautics as well as the design and construction of spacecraft. Aeronautical engineering and aerospace engineering degree programs typically contain many of the same courses. Principles and theories that are common to aeronautical engineering are also applied in the construction of buildings and evaluation of the performance of space vehicles within the earth's atmosphere. This book entitled Aeronautics and Astronautics encompasses the study, design, and manufacture of airplanes or other aviation vehicles. It also focuses on the theory and practice of navigation beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no technological development in the century has more fundamentally transformed human life than the airplane and its support apparatus. The nature of flight, and the activities that it has engendered throughout the world, makes the development of aviation technology an important area of investigation. Why did aeronautical technology take the shape it did? Which individuals and organizations were involved in driving it? What factors influenced particular choices of technologies to be used? More importantly, how has innovation affected this technology? Innovation and the Development of Flight, a first strike at the "new aviation history," represents a significant transformation of the field by relating the subject to larger issues of society, politics, and culture, taking a more sophisticated view of the technology that few historians have previously attempted. This volume moves beyond a focus on the artifact to emphasize the broader role of the airplane and, more importantly, the entire technological system. This suggests that many unanswered questions are present in the development of modern aviation and that inquisitive historians seek to know the relationships of technological systems to the human mind. Some of the subjects discussed are early aeronautical innovation and government patronage; the evolution of relationships among airports, cities, and industry; the relationship of engine development to the entire aviation industry; the Department of Commerce's influence on light plane development; pressure in the Air Force for the development of jet engines; and lessons of the National Aerospace Plane Program. Aviation historians and historians of technology will find Innovation and the Development of Flight a valuable examination of aeronautical innovation providing foundations for continued explorations of this field.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and integrated exposure to airplane performance, stability, dynamics, and flight control. The text supports a two-semester course for senior undergraduate or first-year graduate students in aerospace engineering. Basic aerodynamics, dynamics, and linear control systems are presented to help the reader grasp the main subject matter. In this text, the airplane is assumed to be a rigid body-elastic deformations and their effects on airplane motion are not considered. Numerous solved examples illustrate theory and design methods. Several exercise problems with answers are included in each chapter to help the reader acquire problem-solving skills. In addition, MATLAB tools are used for the control design. Professors!
