Book excerpt: "Of what use is one ugly little tree?" Atop a windswept hill, a crooked little tree stands alone . . . until one Christmas Eve, when an old woman labors up the hill with a box of ornaments, and tells the tree that he is special. He is to be the official Christmas tree for all of the homeless people in the city below! Year after year, colored balls and garland adorn the tree at Christmastime, but one year, the woman does not come. Will there be a Christmas for homeless? This story is based on actual events about a funny-looking mimosa tree that sits above a busy freeway in Fort Worth, Texas. A formerly homeless woman decorated the tree, year after year, so that the homeless would have a Christmas tree. When she died, neighbors took over the custom and now decorate it for Easter, Halloween, and other holidays as well. It can be seen on the north side of Interstate 30 near the Oakland exit.

Book excerpt: My 21 Years in the White House, first published in 1960, is the fascinating account by Alonzo Fields of his service as head butler under 4 presidents: Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower. Fields (1900-1994) began his employment at the White House in 1931, and kept a journal of his meetings with the presidents and their families; he would also meet important people like Winston Churchill, Princess Elizabeth of England, Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller, presidential cabinet members, senators, representatives, and Supreme Court Justices. He would also witness presidential decision-making at critical times in American history -- the attack on Pearl Harbor, the death of Franklin Roosevelt, the desegregation of the military, and the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. As Fields often told his staff, “...remember that we are helping to make history. We have a small part ... but they can't do much here without us. They've got to eat, you know.” Included are sample menus prepared for visiting heads-of-state and foreign dignitaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was not quite three, I fell out of the family tree house and landed on my head. Since then friends and family have wondered about my brain. This memoir of several dozen vignettes explores my fallen condition while growing up in Alabama, while serving as a medic with the Navy and Marine Corps, and while pursuing my teaching career. As a five-year-old I hated suspenders, so when I got my first belt I stood next to the highway in front of our house with my stomach stuck out so people in cars passing by could see my belt While serving in the Navy, I once tried to impress a barmaid in Tijuana with my knowledge of high school Spanish by reciting the Lords Prayer in Spanish. Other vignettes celebrate normal times, as when I provided nursing care for a slowly dying, 84-year-old veteran of the Spanish American War. Another is when I attended the graduation of a former student of mine, a 50-year-old black woman who graduated summa cum laude from Mercer University. At eighteen she was denied admission to Mercer because of her race. Of course the best times have been with my beloved Danish wife of fifty-one years, our son and his family, and my parents, brothers and sisters. I hope the reader finds all of the vignettes either amusing or engaging.

Book excerpt: When President Theodore Roosevelt announces that there will be no White House Christmas tree because cutting down trees is against his conservation efforts, his youngest sons, Quentin and Archie, are deeply disappointed. They can't imagine Christmas without a tree. The two determined boys enlist the help of their aunt and sneak a small tree into their bedroom. When the president finds out, he takes the boys to see the chief forester in hopes of teaching them a lesson. But the chief forester says cutting down smaller trees will help the taller ones grow. "Isn't that bully!" says the president, and the boys shout, "Hooray for the tree!" Gary Hines and Alexandra Wallner bring this story, based on actual events, to life in a light-hearted text matched with bright, cheerful art. Young readers will enjoy this humorous episode in history and relish the children's "victory" over their father. At the end of the book, there is a photograph of the Roosevelt family and an author's note on Roosevelt, his children, and the real Christmas tree.
