Book Synopsis Anxieties, Fear and Panic in Colonial Settings by : Harald Fischer-Tiné
Download or read book Anxieties, Fear and Panic in Colonial Settings written by Harald Fischer-Tiné and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the history of colonial empires has been shaped to a considerable extent by negative emotions such as anxiety, fear and embarrassment as well as by the regular occurrence of panics. The case studies it assembles examine the various ways in which panics and anxieties were generated in imperial situations and how they shook up the dynamics between seemingly all-powerful colonizers and the apparently defenceless colonized. Drawing from examples of the British, Dutch and German colonial experience, the volume sketches out some of the main areas (such as disease, native ‘savagery’ or sexual transgression) that generated panics or created anxieties in colonial settings and analyses the most common varieties of practical, discursive and epistemic strategies adopted by the colonisers to curb the perceived threats.
Book Synopsis A Protestant Theology of Religious Pluralism by : Livingstone Thompson
Download or read book A Protestant Theology of Religious Pluralism written by Livingstone Thompson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book three main things have been accomplished. First, it locates the emergence of religious pluralism as a problem for Christian theology. Secondly, it shows the critical weaknesses in the approaches to pluralism that we find in the works of Gavin D'Costa, George Lindbeck and John Hick, all major players in the field of religious pluralism. Retrieving theological material from seventeenth-century Comenius and eighteenth-century Zinzendorf, the book shows that the Protestant tradition has suitable theological material that can better serve the development of a theology of religious pluralism. Thirdly, the book enters into dialogue with Islam and highlights exciting new approaches to addressing the issues of salvation, the Qur'an and Christology. One critical outcome of the book is that it breaks new ground in showing the limitations of liberation theology and proposes a fascinating, new, pluralism-sensitive hermeneutical approach to contextual theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical narrative of Protestantism in India records the views of the Tamil-speaking peoples among whom German Pietists worked beginning in 1706. The views recorded here include those of Hindus, Muslims, and Catholics, but special attention is given to Tamils who became Evangelicals. Drawing on concrete historical analysis, Tamil writings, and archival materials, D. Dennis Hudson's work not only illumines a little-known period of religious history but also raises significant questions about the relationship between faith and culture.

Book Synopsis H. G. Wells and the Culminating Ape by : Peter Kemp
Download or read book H. G. Wells and the Culminating Ape written by Peter Kemp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H.G. Wells's view of the world - and hence his writing - was strongly influenced by the biologist's training he received during his three years as a student at the Normal School of Science, South Kensington (now Imperial College, London). Those things which a creature needs in order for it and its species to thrive get particular attention in Wells's books. Tracing biological themes through Wells's work, as Peter Kemp does here, shows the pattern of his thought and brings to light the bizarre workings of a fascinating imagination. For the book's reissue in paperback, an afterword has been added.
Book Synopsis Mission and Power by : Atola Longkumer
Download or read book Mission and Power written by Atola Longkumer and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mission cannot ignore its engagement with power. Christian mission is unavoidably located within matrices of power structures: religion, culture, colonial power, economics, and gender. It is not only in the missionary movement largely emanating from the West that Christian mission is linked to structure and power. The Christian communities of today also present significant images, practices, expressions, and sometimes exploitations of power. This volume explores the notion of power in relation to Christian mission and critically engages questions such as the following: What notions of power have informed mission? How have power structures been negotiated between Christian mission and local culture/religions? Which of these manifestations of power are disturbing and counter the values of the gospel?
