Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Annual: For the Year of Our Lord, 1921 The proceedings of the Executive Board, the several Boards in joint session, and the Board of Church Polity are given in full except such routine matters and administrative proceedings as are common to all such meetings. The Executive Board of The American Christian Convention held its annual session in Dayton, Ohio, October 19-22, and was presided over by Rev. F. G. Coffin, President of the Convention. Three of the members were not present: - Mr. Hermon Eldredge, who came, but was called always by relegram; Rev. W. P. Minton, who was in Japan; anfd Professor S. O. Albaugh, who was detained by professional duties. The routine business and executive provisions were of the usual character and number, and would be of but little interest to the readers of The Christian Annual. The report of the Secretary revealed a deficit in the resources of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, which had resulted from the increased cost in all lines of its service, and also an unjustifiable indifference was authorized to remit an additional hundred dollars to the Council, and to pay the expense of our members from the current fund of the Convention. The facts and conditions of the Park Grove Chapel, Springfield, Ohio, were considered by the Board, and Hon. O. W. Whitelock and Rev. J. F Burnett, were appointed to investigate the matter, and to act upon their best judgment. A petition from the American Bible Society, that our churches be asked to include that organization in their benevolences, was carefully considered, and resulted in the adoption of the following resolution: Resolved, That we sympathetically endorse the American Bible Society, and recommend that our churches include this Society in their budget. In taking such action we desire to point out to the Society that each church in the denomination is autonomous, and final action must rest with the church itself. We recommend at the same time that be sent only to the more important of our churches - this in the financial interest of the Society itself. The Convention Secretary had been supplying at Franklin, Ohio, as opportunity afforded, which fact was reported to the Board, and the following action taken: Moved by O. W. Whitelock that the Convention Secretary be authorized to supply at Franklin Christian Church, subject to such denominational calls as shall demand his service, until such time as a pastor of the church can be secured, which, in the judgment of the Board, need not be delayed. Much confusion has been caused, both in common and religious discourse, by the neglect of proper definitions. Personality belongs to all Persons and only to them and the meaning of the abstract term agrees with that of the noun from which it is formed. Human personality must be known, before there can be any knowledge of that which is Divine; and with both there is the same diversity in the meaning of words. Propositions which are true and im portant with one sense, are untrue and worthless with another. We propose, therefore, to consider briefly the different kinds of Personality, which should be distinguished in order to avoid error. One kind belongs to individuals, another to societies, and another to ofiees; while figurative language is often employed when no real persons are meant, or persons are referred to in a way which, taken literally, cannot possibly be true. To illustrate the necessity of united effort, we need only remark, that the enemies of the doctrines of the Reformation are collecting their energies, and meditating a comprehensive system of attack, which demands on our part a corresponding concert of action. In addition to this organized system of attack, there are individuals in every part of our country who are filling the land with cavils against the doctrines of grace, calculated to unsettle the minds of multitudes, and if it were possible, to deceive the very elect. This ubiquity of indefatigable assault, seems to require a like ubiquity of inde fatigable defence. Is it not time then to lift up an ensign which may be seen from east to west, and from north to south, and to sound a trumpet of alarm which shall draw around the standard of our Captain the defenders of his faith? Stewart, by Mr. Hermon Eldredge in behalf of the editors and departmental officials as a testimony of their appreciation of the untiring zeal with which he has prosecuted the manifold and arduous duties connected with the building of this new denominational home; and a Similar floral greeting was given Mr. Stewart by the various departments and employees of the Association. Rev. D. G. Pleasant directed the music during the day. The Special music furnished by Mr. Meredith Stewart and Miss Elizabeth Banta, and by the orchestra of the Piqua Christian Church was of an exceptionally high quality and deeply appreciated. And the Singing interludes by Miss Marian Morrill added greatly to the impressiveness of her mother's beautiful closing address in the evening.
